This reminds me of a conversation we had with a financial planner an architect hooked us up with when we were thinking of building a house instead of buying one. He basically said “think of your house as a base, which you will leave to do most everything” and clarified all the other things we need to save money for. He dissuaded us from over-spending and we ended up ditching the architect firm, which was presumably not what they had hoped for!

Anyway, his advice seemed excellent, until Covid-19 came along. Now… probably still the right choice for us, but less clear-cut.

Yeah. I prefer, given the option, to stay home, be comfortable, and dive into hobbies like boardgaming, computery things, and woodworking (and general DIY/craftiness).

There’s a good chance I would be a hermit in the mountains if not for:

  • good internet
  • My partner’s family live in Kansas City (my family does-ish, too, but I only see them at holidays)
  • Need friends to play boardgames with
  • Big houses in the mountains are a lot more expensive than big houses in Kansas City

Here in the UK, where the urban areas are similarly densely inhabited by US standards though not to the extent of Japan, I think a lot of people have worked on a similar basis: you go out to work/study, you go out shopping, you go out to the pub or cinema or whatever, so the house is basically for sleeping and eating in.

My wife and I have space-consuming hobbies (even without taking the boardgaming into account) so we bought a place that’s rather larger than would be usual for two people (and thus further from the places we wanted to go of course; we’re in London commuter suburb country, but three miles from a railway station). I was already working from home when we moved here, so that was a factor too. This has served us very well.

This isn’t on topic. I will get a shelfie together at some point, but for now here’s my Wall o’ GURPS. (4e High Tech missing as it was in use elsewhere.)

I have to admit, larger houses in other countries is a big driving force for me wanting to emigrate. I’d say UK living is mostly indoors (because weather!), so our small houses are annoying and frustrating.

The idea of setting furniture away from the wall in a british house is INSANITY. That’s the definition of rich to me. Enough space so you can waste some?! Luxury!

I’ve heard that some people arrange arm chairs away from the wall, and maybe even have a coffee table :scream:

I have a coffee table. It’s there to make the walk to turn on the TV slightly longer, psychologically increasing the space of the room.

They make these satisfyingly clicky selector boxes now that connect by a lead to your TV’s RF connection. I get the full spread of UHF/VHF programming at my fingertips.

Also off-topic, two cubes of my Expedit holding my record collection.

The other two cubes (that aren’t a cupboard) are filled with junk and it’s just occured to me they could be filled with boardgames. Maybe time for a shuffle.

I have vinyl in two Kallax boxes too!

Projekt Debut? Lovely turntable if so!

Good eye! Yeah, Project Debut Carbon DC in Piano Black.

Took the guess over the Rega equivalent (in theory they aren’t woefully overpriced in the UK?). The Ortofon tipped me. I had a piano black Debut III that I enjoyed for years before finally ditching my (considerable) collection. Moving a few thousand Km forces tough decisions when you have something in excess of a ton. :grimacing:

Let me rock your world then!

My “nicely” organized closet:

Followed by the rest of my collection:

Missing are my two newest games, Star Wars: Outer Rim and the Lost Ruins of Arnak, which are stacked near the door of the garage, as well as Shadows Over Camelot: the Card Game and Hokkaido, which are on a shelf in another closet. Oh, and most of my X-Wing stuff is in my bedroom closet.

Enjoy!

That is extremely generous of you to say. Looks like a jumbled mess to me.

Due to the apartment being too small to contain it all a shelfie is almost impossible at this point. Instead I took photos of the box covers (yes weird that’s me) and arranged them on a website: Boardgame Collection – Delusions.de

I have four points of envy:

  • Iwari Deluxe
  • Hallertau
  • Thurn & Taxis
  • Beyond the Sun

Wonderfully curated collection. And I really like this lens to view it by.

Note: I am still waiting on Beyond the Sun… but I have been playing online and it fits so well in one of my favorite categories that I couldn’t keep it from the page.
