My feelings on Impulse are very similar

I held off on posting this one since I wanted to take some time to assess my remorse-factor before actually cracking the thing, but I have finally gotten around to buying the Command Station for Space Base.

This has been out for a while now and there still don’t appear to be any announced plans for further expansion (aside from the fact that Shy Pluto was branded with a number), and the base box fits everything released just fine. That said, ours is very well loved and showing it, and in the end, that was the big tipping point; suddenly the included custom sleeves were looking mighty attractive.

There’s no getting around the fact that this is a literal doubling of the box size, matching mostly flush with my copy of Forbidden Stars (which is almost twice as deep). This doesn’t make much of an impact on my shelf, but transporting the game won’t be as easy anymore. Thankfully it’ll still fit in my backpack. This is at odds with the fact that we like to play Space Base outside. Sleeving the cards helps make that more viable, but dragging it along anywhere won’t be inconsequential anymore.

Anyway, the new dice are great, the insert is decent, the box walls are sturdy, and I’m prepared to accept wobbly card stacks for the perks they’ll provide, namely:

  • Easier shuffling
  • Durability, particularly outdoors
  • Easier to slot and pick up cards

I think at some point I just started ignoring the annoying quirks of those skinny cards, particularly picking them up from the market and slotting them under the boards. This should help with that tremendously.

Anyway, that’s a lot of words to justify a hard to justify purchase, but in the end I felt there were enough tangible benefits to outweigh the increase in box size and the usual annoyances with sleeves.

So it is basically a big box? I wasn’t aware. We haven’t played our copy enough to warrant such a purchase but I wouldn’t call it hard to justify. Space Base is a fun game that does what I wanted Machi Koro to do only so much better and in space! Cannot wait to play this with friends—sadly my list of those games has become a mile long… I need to start prioritizing.

It is indeed a big box. Not by a lot but it’s definitely bigger than the typical “TTR sized” box. Compared to the original base box it’s pretty substantial.

It’s been a really busy few weeks as it seemed that 16 months worth of tourists decided to arrive all at once! Anyway, I indulged in some recent retail therapy to give me something to look forward to once summer settles down.

In terms of titles just for me, I bought:

  • Le Havre - as a fan of Uwe’s worker placement games
  • Firefly - thanks to Roger’s introduction game here
  • Horrified - had my eye on this for ages as a quicker, lighter horror game than A Touch of Evil plus it might work with non-gamer friends too
  • D&D Adventure System’s Castle Ravenloft - found at a cheap price for the quickish dungeon crawler I’m still searching for

and for titles to play with my social/non-gamer friends, covering a few classics and range of mechanics:

  • Survive! - a game I first played almost 40 years ago and including the 6 player and dolphin/squid expansions
  • Codenames - for an alternate team word association game to Articulate
  • King of Toyko - for something a bit silly but quick and I know they’ll like the monsters
  • Get Bit - another quick filler for a card game
  • No Thanks! - another quick card game
  • Lords of Vegas - with the Up expansion to divert one of them who always wants to play Monopoly!

Might look for another couple of things later in the year but will see how these go once I have the chance to play them. So far, the only one I’ve got to try is Horrified (solo) and that has been very enjoyable and fits perfectly into my schedule. Getting longer than an hour regularly to play a game means that things with too much play time or set up/take down is tricky at this time of year.

I decided to participate in the August US Math Trade, so I was going through the offer list this morning to see what all had been added. I see “Mars Needs Mechanics” listed and I think, “well, I already have that one” but then I look again and it’s highlighted in the color that denotes not being in my collection. I blink a couple of times and then go to my shelf to ensure that I actually do own it. I pop open the BGG page for Mars Needs Mechanics and, sure enough, it’s not “in my collection”.

Easy enough to fix. But now I’m thinking “how many other games are missing from my BGG collection?” O_O

Missing as in you have the game, it is just not flagged on BGG? Or missing as in you don‘t own the game—yet?

Missing as in the game is on my shelf, but not added to my BGG collection

Because it was cheap, Scotland Yard. I enjoy these sort of games, but am absolutely no good at them.

I nearly posted: “Oh, that can be sorted easily”. Then I paused. And remembered the size of your collection.

And still decided to post it.

I would love, actually, to go through each box on my shelf and do a complete re-inventory of everything… Sounds therapuetic!

I might just work on that in the evenings (for the next 3 years)

Sounds like something you could have done during lockdown…

With the Delta variant (and where I live), I’ll have plenty of chances to come up with creative lockdown hobbies.

I actually deleted (like, wiped) whatever I had logged up until about 2016 or so because it was a wholly chaotic mess and generally not of much value. The thought of having to get it all up to snuff, particularly considering how many games had left my collection (forget all the adds!) felt a bit like self-flagellation. So ‘poof!’ it all went.

Don’t do that. Keep it a mess if you have to. Just don’t wipe it.

Got a lil’ birthday scratch and treated myself to a walk with the kid on the boardwalk a town over… which happens to be right where a nice friendly game shop is. Snapped up Bullet:heart: (I hate that I “have to” do that) for myself, and Rhino Hero Jr. for my daughter. One for me, one for her. :kissing_heart:

Haba has a bunch of really nice products in their “my very first games” line and this is our second add. The first was Nibble Munch Crunch, which she’s starting to really play with nicely. Most of them amount to gamifying some mundane task, but they always have some really good ideas for free play, and the component quality to support it.

That said, she’s showing some aptitude towards stacking and building now, and she’s always gotten a laugh from wanton destruction, so it was a no-brainer for today’s treat.

I’m excited to play Bullet but I have to admit I kind of wish I was able to source the deluxe edition for this one. It’s a super tactile game and I think the chunky bullets would really make a difference in handling. Maybe I’ll have a chance to upgrade in the future.

I bought Descent: Legends of the Dark. $194.99 CAD (220.38 after tax).

The models are beautiful, the terrain is spectacular, the app seems neat (I’ve watched the introduction twice), but I haven’t actually played it. I am looking forward to painting the heroes (the baddies… I’ll get to them).

I am so excited to put this on the table at some point. Soon, hopefully (unlikely!).

EDIT: Oh, and just to mention it: the box is half empty by design. The bottom half is where you put all the beautiful 3D terrain, while the models, rules, tokens, cards, and room tiles all go in the top half. It’s a clever design! I like it.

After chatting with my sister and brother-in-law, I decided to grab Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion for us to all play together (them, my son, and myself). My son and I will continue our campaign of the original.

I also added Raiders of the North Sea: Fields of Flame. I’ve had the first expansion for awhile and was able to grab the deluxe box on sale so figured why not, since my has also enjoyed the game.

After much deliberation I broke down and added Summoner Wars 2.0 Master Set. I had wanted the OG for awhile but never grabbed it and it seemed like a great time. Hopefully this will hit the table soon.

To round off the order (free shipping) I grabbed the Rangers of Shadow Deep - Enemy Deck which is a huge deck of cards with the stats for every enemy in every book released so far, which will be great when we finally get it to the table.

Last to the order were some D&D Xorn minis. There was a very small store exclusive expansion for Wildlands called the Hag-Moles that is incredibly easy to proxy, and some posts on BGG said these guys were great replacements for the tokens that came in the actual expansion so for $5 I figured why not!

“He went underground!”
“He’s got to surface somewhere…”

(To this day, mentioning that game around my siblings still tends to prompt this exchange.)
