The resurrected miniatures painting and showing off thread

Chewing through another unit of Rebels (Pathfinder this time). Next up is the Rebel Trooper Upgrade set and the Specialists, and then the one Rebel AT-RT I own.

Eight more Rebels to join the army:

This brings me to 53 painting Rebels, and 32 remaining. Next is the AT-RT, and then I’ll think I’ll dive into my 3 units of Rebel Veterans.

What a remarkably poor design for a war machine.

Staggeringly so. I mean, there are stupid designs in Star Wars, but the AT-RT is almost WarHammer levels of “The Pilot of This Should Die Immediately.”

“Hey guys. What if…”

“… we put the pilots out in the MIDDLE of the suit?”
“Hmm, that seems like a poor idea…”

“Oh, they’ll still be wearing their usual armour though. Except for no helmets for the heroes.”
“Oh, that’s okay then.”

I remember one of the Horus Heresy books where a marine got shot cos he took his helmet off and it just made me laugh because so many of the miniatures have no helmets.

In defence of miniatures of marines without helmets it often looks good and having ‘human’ faces in minis helps our reaction to them. If that universe was real and I was a marine you’d never catch me in battle without a helmet on. However armies of the miniatures almost always look more striking when some of the marines don’t have helmets on.

Yeah I get the aesthetic - it just amused me in the book that someone actually died of it!

A Giant Chiton - Giant Snail from Modular Worlds. I’m not sure the black striations on the shell worked but I had fun doing the rest of it

I like the shell - looks great!

I’ve managed to get a dozen archers painted, before switching back to kitbashing more figures for Turnip28.

Finished up a Rebel AT-RT (which, yes, stupid as heck design, but laser swords and deus ex Jedi, so really, expecting consistent or realistic design is probably an unrealistic expectation at this stage).

Just as comparison to the last time I painted one of these…

I don’t think it’s, like, ZOMG SO MUCH BETTER, but I do think that it is better. The last one was about two years ago, I think? But what is time, so it could be anywhere from 2019 up to December of last year.

Anyway. Next is an X-34, which… well, at least the design makes sense? It is a pretty neat sculpt, honestly.

I can see the improvement, although it works well next to the imperial one, where Rebels don’t have much time to tidy up and leave the vehicles neatly clean.

I can see how this design has been criticised so much, for very little to none protection, you just gain a little bit of a higher perspective of the battlefield, and make yourself a clearer target. I could see how it would have been developed in some swampy, watery or grassy planet, or from farmers equipment (cherry pickers of the future?) and then improved on its armour on the traditional versions from Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, but it is still a bit of a stretch.

Lucas wanted to do a homage Hannibal’s elephants when he shot Empire, and I guess some of the designers came up with a two legged version to simulate cavalry??

I mean, in some respects, is it any dumber than riding a motorcycle into battle? About the same amount of cover is provided. No doubt the motorcycle would be faster and more maneuverable though…

First, motorcycles don’t lift you 6 feet in the air, and second, motorcycles were not ridden into battle, but used for quick movement of troops/messengers or scouts/patrols.

What you ride into battle is a tank.

Now that I think, that would not be a terrible patrol vehicle…

I finished up 2 more marines in the ‘Eavy Metal style. This Dark Angel was not my favourite to do. A large part of that was I don’t think the green is dark enough. Also the products I had for the decals also didn’t help.

This Blood Angel I’m much happier with. I’m pleased with the progress I’ve made on the straight lines which was what I wanted to improve on when starting these marines. I think I need a little more on the shades on this one and another intermediate stage on the highlights so they will probably push another Blood Angel up my to do list. These are snap fit minis from Indomitus and it’s annoying me that the supplied decals are not the right squad markings for the supplied minis. You get second company markings and 3rd/4th squad signifiers. In second company the 3rd/4th are not in the Indomitus box. Tsk.

I’m thinking to try and do a marine next that looks a bit more beat up and dare I say more grim dark? I may do something not even GW next, only time will tell.

Finished about an X-34 Speeder… relatively happy with how it turned out

Next up: 3 units of Vets. Only 31 more Rebels to go!

The weathering looks great on this!

Man, if I were a modeller - I’d make that up like a technical, with an improvised gunshield and basic steel-plate armour round the cockpit.
