The Crowdfunding Thread

Next Root Kickstarter launched today, featuring Root: The Marauder Expansion.

I’m counting this as an expansion, so it’ll count for 0.1 purchases

Not sure if I’m grabbing all of it or just the Marauders and the Clockwork 2 expansion.

How much???

That’s twice what I paid for the base game before shipping for middle pledge!

Right?

The pledges are about 25-50% more than I expected them to be.

I want it. But I cannot have it. I made the mistake of mixing languages once for a game. The Underworld and Clockwork expansions are only now being released in German. I considered doing what I did with Spirit Island and switch over to a new all English copy but Root is not the same category as SI … and also they don’t have that kind of all in pledge. So I’ll be preordering the upcoming German content instead.

They’re very on the fence about Brexit and VAT, so not sure which way I’ll fall. Got to admit, the minor factions are more expensive than I was expecting! But it’s Root, so I’ll get it anyway.

I was curious, so I went back and looked at my pledge for the Underworld campaign and compared what I paid then with current retail prices (and assumed I could get free shipping on the retail products~). I paid $80 for Underworld, Clockwork, Resin markers (which are totally unnecessary and I wouldn’t have bought them retail, but nothing in the current campaign seems quite as unnecessary as these, so they are still important for the math), the Exile & Partisans deck and the Vagabond pack.

So, I paid $80 for my pledge. Cheapest I could come up with retail was around $98 (again, assuming I would get free shipping and using historical price data from Boardgame Atlas).

So… I wasn’t able to talk myself out of pledging.

In the UK all that stuff together is $140! Was probably cheaper back at launch - there tends to be huge competition for prices, then they creep up a bit when it settles down. But … Yeah, crazy.

I think the all in will be slightly cheaper than retail even with VAT included. It’s a risk though. I doubt it’ll add up to more than £10-20 more in the grand scheme of things though, so maybe worth a risk.

Yet another Aeon’s End Kickstarter:

This one is another, apparently quite substantial legacy release that’s intended to wrap up the current narrative arc. Aeon’s End Legacy (as much as we got to play before COVID hit) seemed like one of the better Legacy implementations I’ve seen so more of that is good in my book.

I could wish they’d slow down a little, though. I still haven’t had a chance to play with New Age or Outcasts…

I love the game (and, disclaimer, demo it at Essen when there’s an Essen), but like malkav11 I’ve barely played the last two.

I’m probably in anyway but a lot of that will be completism.

I have 3.5 waves of Aeon’s End that I bought as a bundle secondhand. I’ve played exactly 3 times (been waiting on going through it until I can convince my partner to play with me)

There’s just so much content available already.

Exactly. And, I hate to say it, but a lot of it isn’t that different? The cards, specifically, just don’t have that much room to distinguish themselves. The mages mix things up a bit more, the bosses quite a bit, but the spells and such? Kinda shruggy.

$409 of Aeon’s End?!?! :open_mouth:

I’m enjoying legacy, but that’s a LOT of stuff. Curious as to how advanced the system pushes itself, but that’s one huge deckbuilder.

Given there’s no exclusives. I’m happy to keep my money for a year (or use it to buy Root itself) but there’s no compelling reason to back it in the UK

I’m only pledging the middle range, I don’t have the first Clockwork, so I’d rather save for the Partisans deck and Underworld expansion, I’d rather have more factions to choose from.

I think I can persuade myself out of the Root expansion this time, but I might keep an eye out for retail.

My group isnt so hot about it either. Main reason is that they havent even played the latest expansion, and the total price tag for backing it too.

Is anything in the Root KS exclusive? .I’ve been interested for ages, but held off due to player count and complexity (3+ with that level of teach is a a hard pass for me as the game teacher, lol).

I know the new stuff is supposed to really improve lower player count games so I may finally jump in, but probably not during the KS.

Leder Games has made a point of not doing KS exclusives and not doing stretch goals.

And for that, in part, they earn my pledge.

The only advantage offered to backers is discounts on the end products that will end up in retail.

Interestingly, they are not offering back catalogue items as add-ons, because they would prefer you just buy them retail or direct from their website

Yeah, makes sense. No reason to give KS a cut they don’t have to. Or whatever pledge manager. I think a lot of other companies it’s because either they then commission a new print run based on addon numbers or it drives demand they might not get through regular channels, but I assume Root’s selling fine and printing regularly.

My copy of Import/Export has finally arrived!

I have a black box with a little Russian flag :+1:
