I just read the news article, and I am such a sucker for hyped up “mini aplenty” games. That Sea of Legends seems epic! Thanks SUSD for bring it to my attention and also not thanks for making me be wary of it… Argh!!
I just withdrew my backing from a Kickstarter campaign for the first time. I had been getting samples of material for the forthcoming Technocracy supplement. I was hoping for the wild and crazy cosmic visions and high-powered player characters I loved from classic Mage and found support for in previous anniversary supplements. I wasn’t seeing any of that, and—the final thing that exhausted my patience—I saw an entire chapter filled with propaganda for conventional progressive thought. Not even a suggestion that the Technocracy differ from it, or that they have their own hidden agenda as a reason for supporting it for the unenlightened masses.
I’m not going to say “If you’ve got a message, call Western Union.” I can read fiction that’s ideological, even if I disagree with the ideology (I enjoy Eric Flint’s 1632, for example). But I am going to say “Instruct by pleasing,” as they said in the Renaissance. I always knew that the World of Darkness was created by conventional progressives, but they used to do the work of making things fun and interesting. Not this time.
Hmm… having read down as far as the shipping costs I’m not so keen. 15-20 Euro seems like a lot unless you’re going for one of the big pledges.
Pulled the trigger on 1840 just before the campaign ended. This will be my first 18XX, although I’m playing with the idea of PnPing 1889. I have been interested in 18XX for a while now, but never found an opening to get into it. Isolation has given me the time now to watch a few Heavy Cardboard streams and the release of 18XX.games might be temptation enough to try a first online game.
Apparently 1840 isn’t too heavy on the MacGuffins and might be a good stepping stone after 1889. Also supporting a local designer who made a game set in my favorite city is kind of a no-brainer
1840 is quite strange among 18xx games. 18CZ is by the same designer and is sold directly from his website https://lonny.at
18CZ also has 2- and 3- player modes.
[edit] 1824 is also sold there and may be more main-stream in design than CZ? I actually don’t know.
I just went goo-goo bananas on Dice Throne. I’ve got an order in for Season 2, which should ship in a couple of weeks, but I also ended up jumping onto the Season One Rerolled/Dice Throne Adventures pledge manager and piled on there. I opted out of the miniatures so far. They’re nice and the pre-painted option is great, but I don’t really see much need for them in a game like this, aside from maybe appealing to my nephews more.
This is going to be a LOT of box, so in consideration of that and some other big incoming Kickstarters, not to mention a significant priority shift in terms of the games I want to keep due to a new baby in the house, I’ve put a huge chunk of my collection on sale. I’ve already offloaded a number of games, but I’ve still got a few more I’ll be letting go, and every last one of them was painful.
YES!!! We love Dice Throne! We have Season 2 at home, and are eagerly awaiting Season 1 Re-Rolled.
That does sound painful. I have a few to move that I want to send on, but I may have to make some tough choices as well, considering what’s still coming…
Did you go in for the Adventures box? I was 100% certain I was just going to stick to the standard game, but I think my partner might really get on with it.
No, I strongly considered it but wasn’t entirely sold on it during the campaign. The info that came out after, makes it look more appealing, Soni may grab it later, but we shall see.
The other factor was just how many tactical coops I have with loads of content. I need to start being a least a but selective (he says while eyeing a copy of the Hellboy: the Board Game - Deluxe Edition on the BGG market! Lol).
So I’ve finally lost my patience with Monolith’s bungling and have formally requested a refund of my pledge. The PM went live this afternoon and between opening up the limited stuff to late and $1 backers, and apparently buying enough bandwidth to support one backer at a time, I have missed out on every single item I needed to get full value out of my current collection.
Now that my big game of choice will never be in a satisfying place, I’m cutting ties and have put my current stuff up for sale.
[EDIT] Probably seems a bit extreme, but I’ve never had such a baffling experience trying to collect for and enjoy a game, and it’s just not worth the hassle to me.
Surprised to see SHEOL struggling so much. There was quite a bit of BGG hype for it, but it looks like it reached a far too high. I give it a week before it’s cancelled.
Bother, I missed out on Final Girl by setting a reminder yesterday and then not doing anything about it. Oh well. I don’t suppose my life will be vastly poorer, to be honest.
Is this an abbreviation?
The title itself is an acronym… I think. The box says S.H.E.O.L., but the blurb goes on to say Sheol is a noun for the bad things. Nothing else in the campaign uses it as an acronym.
So even the creators don’t seem to know.
Yeah, I am a bit too. It has some intriguing ideas, but too many elements I don’t care for.
They also have a more “realistic” funding goal, which I don’t think is helping them. There is a mental block for many people (myself included) when it comes to backing a game so far from its goal.
The risk is probanly less than a game with a fake funding goal that just finds, but it feels worse to back something like this, if that makes sense.

Another Kramer & Kiesling! However, I am very wary of this. I like Simone Luciani, but this is another oldie game that’s been redesigned to be more modern.
I want to know what about K&K games make publishers think they can price gouge for them on Kickstarter. First Paris, now this.
Yeah, I’ll wait for retail.
Is £40 price gouging?!?
Probably not. But it’s another €20 shipping to the US. So it’ll be cheaper for me retail.
When I read that the Millennium Blades expansion Kickstarter was still accepting late pledges, I did some reading up over the weekend and decided to pledge for the base game, which is a bit cheaper than at retail and comes with a few promos. I know it’s an older game, but from what I’ve read it seems like a one of a kind type of game. Very excited to get my hands in this.
