Last Game you sold! (Volume 2)

I’ve actually ended up having second thoughts about Coffee Traders and pulled back my pending offer for the moment. I got a surprising amount of pushback from my partner about the decision (I thought she’d be relieved!) so at the very least I’ll give the game its fair shot.

Honestly I’m still not sure it’ll find a place on the shelf even if I love it, simply for the weight and preferred player count, but I suppose I could be surprised. It all comes down to my partner.

Looks like I’m making a double, but I’ve got a doozie, as Too Many Bones is gone. This was part of an anticipated “plan B” which, as you might guess, has been executed.

I absolutely adore Too Many Bones, but my two-handed solo experience on Sunday, while fun, solidified my concerns: it’s either too little or too much. Basically it’s not tuned out of the box for satisfying lone wolf play (IMO), but using a second (or more) Gearloc, while dramatically increasing the fun, also dramatically increases the cognitive load and fiddle. The stupid box is a very real secondary reason, but essentially I got bogged down and didn’t have the same appetite for solo play as I did before. Off it went.

This helped fund Cloudspire (plan B) which I’ll post in the requisite thread, and there’s a very real risk that this one will get flipped as well. But I gotta keep trying—I got SO CLOSE with TMB, it only felt natural to give Chip Theory another shot. I was going to go for it in the first place, but when Bones came up as a trade option, I figured I had a good low risk entry point.

I regret nothing and hungrily await any invites for a multiplayer session.

I have recently put up my “For Trade” games on ebay Kleinanzeigen–mostly for pickup because I am unwilling to send out all those small games and also don’t have enough boxes. Not completely unexpected, the only games I got rid of went via mail.

Sold:

  • Roll Player
  • Cloud Age
  • Aeon’s End
  • Century Spice Road
  • Mansions of Madness 1st edition (well technically not sold… because this one was free)
  • Rajas of the Ganges Dice Charmers
  • Welcome To

You may note that I sold a bunch of bigger games and a few smaller ones, this was because I stated on the add I will only mail above 30€ and so with all the bigger games people checked out the smaller ones  I will put up the same list of games on the even more local “quoka” sometime this week. Because there are at least 20 more games on my sell list.

Luckily, I don’t live in range… I’d have taken those off you gladly.

I have the app for Aeon’s End and I will play this again probably.

But … this whole boss fight thing is not something I enjoy in a boardgame and neither is it for my partner. I love deck building and I do like this aspect of the game but the boss fight structure puts me off. I had hoped that the cooperative aspect would draw my partner in, but it didn’t. So with a huge number of interesting deckbuilders in my collection… this one just didn’t make it. It went with the whole “do I want to play this any time soon” metric. Sorry @RogerBW I know you love this one.

As for Century. It was yet another attempt of mine at not buying Splendor (also it was a cheap offer). But now that I have played a bunch of games of Splendor with my partner on BGA, I just know if we have any of these… it has to be the original. I am also letting go of Space Explorers. The one that remains atm is A Wonderful World, with the solo mode and a bit more complexity this one has more staying power for me. I have a tab open for a shop that has Splendor for 23€—but with so many games unplayed or not played enough and BGA offering us the async option (yes yes we’re playing Splendor async in work breaks), it seems like we need to put Space Base on the table and not buy Splendor.

Sold more games

  • Mandala (just do not want to play this again, too opaque for me)
  • Periodic (why did I ever kickstart this?)
  • White Chapel (the big one, still got the small one, don‘t need both)
  • Chez Goth (Still got Chez Geek for nostalgia)

Selling is… addictive? I just put up another ad on a more local service hoping to not have to mail everything this time. But if it doesn‘t go anywhere I‘ll go back to ebay Kleinanzeigen. I decided for games I was a undecided about to put them in with a bit higher prices.

It also seems to be keeping me from buying new stuff ATM? I would really like to get back down safely below the 200 games and so I‘ve been sorting my geekgroup.app like a fiend… trying to figure out which games I really want.

This is currently sat on my “to go” pile. I enjoy the periodic table aesthetically (currently to my left is a notepad and a jigsaw with it on that I bought the other day), but the game was just … fine. Nothing exciting about it at all.

Playing a friend’s copy of Periodic nearly put me off all Genius games. After talking to said friend, he assures me there are actually good games from Genius.

I’m looking forward to trying out Cellulose.

I trust that it uses the correct periodic table?

Hmmm

I do also have the “Periodic table of games” poster from UKGE a few years ago (sadly I couldn’t find a full pic).

Don’t entirely get this, but I do appreciate the distinction between “Music” and “Jazz”. :smirk_cat: Entirely unrelated elements there.

I should probably explain for the (perhaps-large) number of people who won’t know what the heck that was, that it’s the periodic table that appears from time to time in the delightful Look Around You, which was a series of mock educational short films (and a mock popular-science TV programme in series 2). It’s a tremendously silly show : )

This has to be old when Tm refers to Talisman and not Terraforming Mars or Terra Mystica.

And I am rid of my whole copy of Arkham Horror (German 1st edition including both the expansions) and that is going to pay for me soon ordering FCM and my existing order of The Greater Zimbabwe. Both people who were interested only wanted the Kingsport expansion–apparently the one that is rare. (it is the one that overcomplicated the game so much we stopped playing muhahaha) but I insisted on bundling the thing. I saw it coming a mile away that if I didn’t insist on a bundle I would only be selling Kingsport.

edit: all this selling really makes me regret my 2018 purge which included Antike not the sought-after edition though, Through the Ages, Shangri-La, Talisman 3rd edition, Die Macher early 2000s edition, Fury of Dracula 2nd edition and a bunch more games and I just donated them… because I had no idea it was so easy to sell stuff on ebay Kleinanzeigen.

Oof! Same. I hated the idea of postage at first, but now I’m just used to the idea…

It is even easier. I have them pay postage. I reuse old packaging and I pay postage online and then carry the package to one of two close-by „Packstation“ which is basically a package storage where it will be picked-up within a few hours and arrive anywhere in Germany by the next day. No standing in line… no stress at all. Most stress is figuring out where to get enough old boxes.

Just curious, have you people who now regularly sell games found that the way you treat your games changed?

Like, I dislike sleeved cards, I carry boxes around and they get battered, I sometimes even use biro to update cards when there are errata. If I ever want to sell games, these things would have to change, right? I’m not sure I’m willing to make such changes.

I haven’t, but I’m careful to list games in the condition they are in and take photos of box damage. However I’m only selling to move games that I don’t play so am prepared to take a bit less if the game is in bad nick - I’d rather get £15 (plus postage) for a game that we’ll never play from someone who may love it thankl have it sat on my shelf.

Not so sure about the specific example of writing on cards - I imagine that would be a turn off to a lot of buyers, but from what you’ve said it’s expensive to buy games in Japan if you can’t get them locally so there may still be a market.
