Well, shoot me, I didn’t.
But my bank account is grateful for it. I have bought too much lately.

I thought about starting a “what game are you havering over” thread, but as long as I don’t buy this is it.
Downforce, which I’ve only played on BGA.
I like the idea of betting. I love the track shapes and the special rules for the expansion tracks. But I really don’t enjoy the core movement mechanic, and every game I’ve played or seen (even with quite high-rated players) seems to have a single runaway winner that everyone has to bet on.
(Also I have quite a lot of racing-themed games already: Rallyman GT, Flamme Rouge, Automobiles…)
Why I sold it.
Once everyone bets on the leader, who wins is one of two outcomes. The owner of the lead car, or the one who paid least in the auction.
The other day, I stumbled across PD-Verlag’s website while trying to track down PDF rulebook supplementals. It was there that I discovered PD-Verlag sells expansions/upgrade kits for Imperial 2030 (expansion) and Antike II (upgrade kit), for people who own Imperial and Antike, respectively. What’s more, the price of these items is very reasonable. Those items landed in my shopping basket very fast.
Only, during the checkout process, I discovered that PD-Verlag does not ship to USA (any more? I’m pretty sure I’ve almost bought the Concordia orange player pieces from them and gotten far enough along in the process to have to get out my credit card).
So, try as I might, I could not buy Imperial 2030 (expansion) or Antike II (upgrade)
Global shipping prices may have killed the service
That’s too bad. They certainly used to ship to the US, though it was a bit pricey I think. My mom ordered Concordia for me for Christmas three or so years ago from them, since it wasn’t available anywhere else at the time.
If you’re already concerned then definitely hold off, particularly if you’re likely to play online again. I had the same concerns early on, but then settled into a pretty delightful discovery period with it before finally flipping the board to the snake side for our last couple of games. My partner and I are at a solid 12 plays now, and I’ll be honest that feeling is back, at least to some degree.
With all that said, it’s been an absolute smash hit with my partner, and with that element attached it’s basically never leaving the shelf. It’s a hot duel with us and I sure enjoy the procedure, so it’s been elevated.
Anyway don’t rush into buying it when you have other options to play while considering. I would at least confirm by this point that it doesn’t have the same near-infinite legs as Terra Mystica/Gaia Project
I already own a copy, but I just saw Agra for sale for $25 at a (highly reputed) US online game store. I dare not mention it to my partner, who recently paid full MSRP (~$80 before tax) for it at our FLGS for my birthday about a month ago.
This is why, sometimes, I fell like saying: “don’t buy me anything, just give me a voucher, I will manage it.”
I have largely avoided the problem by not giving or receiving any non-edible gifts (to adults) for many years now.
Our goto presents are: wine, chocolate, flowers or some homemade drink/foodstuffs—the boring classics but classics for a reason. (Some people don’t drink alcohol, some don’t eat chocolate we know this and adjust obviously)
aren’t you married to your Roads & Boats collection?
On topic: Viticulture and the Tuscany expansion. Love the setting, love Tuscany, find the idea of producing wine as a game a great concept, but just don’t think I’ll like the game enough. Also price and the tower of almost unplayed board games that I bought during the last 18 months were factors. (Still, might buy it one day)
Low Lands When i saw the review I considered it a must buy, but after I watched a playthrough of it, the excitement cooled down. Mainly it was that the threat of the dike breaching and killing off all your sheeple seemed far less intimidating in the actual game. It should feel, IMO, like a threat so big and the potential consequences so catastrophic that you constantly have it in the back of your mind. Now it almost seemed to be an afterthought. And when I realised that, it became just another game of being the most efficient, which happens to have an dike in it.
While I’m on the topic of Low Lands, I just saw that Merv has a similar concept, but then with hordes of Mongols asking politely, I assume, to enter the city and you needing to build a wall. Anyone played/owns Merv and can tell me if the threat element of the Mongols works well enough that you’re constantly scared of having to engage in awkward small talk if they break through the wall or if it also feels like an afterthought?
I guess I just want a 3+ player game that gives you the tactical option to pressure your opponents into spending a turn for the greater good or else everybody dies? I don’t know what that says about me
If the price makes a difference, the Essential Edition base game (without EE Tuscany) is a whole lot of play by itself with the best bits of the original Tuscany expansion.
(I haven’t played EE Tuscany yet, but the Grande worker and Mamas+Papas cards being in the base game have a BIG positive effect on the gameplay).
Steve, you mistook the “Last game you DIDN’T buy?”-post for the 'Last game you DIDN’T buy and now someone will come in and convince you to buy it after all"-post!
Checks the thread title Oh nooo!
I am definitely not an enabler who is shaking his fist at this forum for being the main reason I gave in and made my most recent 3 purchases
I went into Forbidden Planet in Liverpool today, and almost bought a copy of Potion Explosion. It’s out of print here at the moment, but I still thought £47.99 was a bit steep…
Waves from The Wirral!
£47.99 seems nearly double the price I would expect (in a pre-pandemic era… Shipping logistics in mid-COVID-19-era… Who knows)
I am resisting Letterpress by Osprey games.
Thing is, I only want it to play with my wife and her friend, but actually I know she doesn’t like games other than quiz games, so I really shouldn’t bother.
Living in the UK prices sadly.
