I only tried the Asmodee shop when Waldrand was sold out everywhere and I checked their pricelist and found it cost 10€ when everywhere including online was 12€. I know it is not much. But Patchwork Anniversary was also a few bucks cheaper than online (I didn‘t get it yet). And I was informed by the sales person that despite them NOT having the new Nusfjord decks separately at the fair (why?), that they were available.

It was going so well until I was reminded of booth credit.

Flamme Rouge Grand Tour exists now? It feels like it’s been 5 years since it was announced.

Yup! And I think this was the third Essen where they said they might have it.

A.I.Pokalsypse just arrived. I haven’t got my head around the gameplay but it looks nice.

Bonus points for wrapping the cards in paper rather than cellophane.

Brass Birmingham is on its way - although only for solo play, I expect. I’ve got a few solo rpgs on the way too for the quieter winter nights ahead.

I pre-ordered the newest Unmatched sets, The Witcher: Steel & Silver and The Witcher: Realms Fall, which should ship out next month ahead of the January street date.

Then, in a fit of what must be insanity, as my wife so far has not really clicked with trick-takers, I ordered Dracula vs. Van Helsing and Jekyll & Hyde vs. Scotland Yard. They were both on a good sale though, as after shipping the total was $40. I really enjoyed my BGA plays of DvVH and the original Jekyll vs. Hyde, so I have had my eye on them, and since the new J&H game is co-op, I am hoping it might have higher odds of hitting the table. Plus, it’s just the season for games of this theme!

I was involved in a massive cross-Canada math trade this week. Because Canada’s so expansive, shipping costs are often prohibitive to math trades, but Canada Post does a free shipping promotion every October so it’s always a period with lots of movement for Canadian gamers.

Out:
Trekking through History KS edition - Gorgeous production, but it felt a little too simple to me
Tikal (supermeeple) - Gorgeous production, but I like Mexica the most out of the mask trilogy
Cuzco (supermeeple) - See above
Shards of Infinity & exps - Fun game, but I’ll stick with the app
Space Alert & exp -Never got a chance to play. Onboarding was too daunting
The Witches - Bought this on the cheap with the purpose of trading it. Never played.
Unforgiven: The Lincoln Assassination KS edition - Never played
Indonesia - Pre-ordered the newer edition
Shakespeare - 2nd copy
Maglev Metro - 2nd copy

In:
3 Ring Circus - Devir’s been batting a thousand lately
Argent: The Consortium & expansions - Seems like a bit of a marmite game, but those who love it really love it
Assyria - Chairman of the Board loves this one and our tastes often overlap
Aton - Classic small box 2 player game that I’ve been keeping an eye out for for years
Bunny Kingdom - One of the all-time best SU&SD reviews
Lancaster & The New Laws - A grail game for me. Now I somehow have to find The Power of the King
Le Havre: Complete edition - Huge blind spot
Ka-Ching - Another Chairman of the Board recommendation
Portobello Market - Apparently an underrated gem
Qin - I’ve played this one, and it is great!
Rats of Wistar - I wasn’t actively seeking this one out, but I got a great deal on the trade. Luciani rarely disappoints.
Riff Raff - Hard to find in Canada. Looks like a hoot
Schadenfreude - Had a lot of buzz last year, but was super hard to find
Shipyard 2nd edition - Game Brain loves this one. Suchy is hit-and-miss for me, but I loooove Underwater Cities & really like Messina 1347
Tobago - Another blind spot. Looks quite unique
White Castle - Already in the BGG top 125
Ys & Ys+ - Yet another Chairman of the Board rec

Overall I’m very happy with how things turned out and I’ve got enough games to last me until then next local math trade this summer.

War Story: Occupied France, something a bit different. And might be a stepping stone to actually running an RPG.

I’ve only had a chance to play Lancaster a couple of times, and I kinda wish I owned a copy. I really enjoyed it.

My P500 copy of Red Dust Rebellion has arrived. After having a good (greatish?) time with Falling Sky, but bemoaning the bot-overhead in that title, I’m excited to have the newest COIN title- one that had a card-driven solo system from the beginning(?).

The artwork is pretty good, too. I mean, for a GMT game.

I’m interested in how that plays, am a big fan of the designer’s channel “3 minute boardgames”.

Just want to join in the Lancaster love. My go to 5 player Euro and just brilliant. Love mixing it up with the new laws, trying different strats, just a great game. Should be still on the shelves.

I’ve been reading the game books the last couple of days and have just finished reading the designer notes and how the game came together- and while I know why I was drawn to the setting and theme for this new COIN game, I’m surprised (or not really, since it seems natural?) that a lot of the motivation and design decisions were based on similar ideas. An excerpt from the playbook:

Choosing a fictional setting allows me to explore the themes and concepts I want without having to overcome that inertial. And the themes in this game are not subtle. Red Dust Rebellion unashamedly looks at the ideas of the information state, corporate excess, colonialism, the climate crisis, self-determination of indigenous people, and the alienation of workers from the means of production. Because it is science fiction, everything is dialed up a notch.

You can read more here. Pages 40 and 41 of the Playbook are particularly interesting.
