Last game you bought?

I have failed.

Opened Townsfolk Tussle last night. Very impressed with the components for a first ever game of that company. I did read the rulebook, and it looks like tonight I will give it a go, probably with two characters, after punching components and organising all the cards.

The free shipping promotion that the new BGG market was doing triggered an insane amount of auctions; still, though, I think I made good use of it without over-indulging (well, maybe a little).

But first, a couple of things that I missed in February and March:

  • A second copy of Asgard’s Chosen, bought locally via BGG auction in order to get the expansion, which was bundled with it.
  • The Isle of Cats: Kittens + Beasts, Boat Pack, and Kickstarter Pack 2 – my Kickstarter pledge for Isle of Cats’s expansion. That is a full, big box.

An eventful March:

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – nearly free on a BGG auction with free shipping. I really like Tolkien’s work and the Middle-Earth setting; and I’ve seen people discuss how this game is much better than the movie upon which it was, ostensibly, launched with.

  • 1860: Railways on the Isle of Wight w/1860: Locomotives of the Isle of Wight – My 1860 Kickstarter and AAG Wave5 preorder arrived. It was a very heavy box filled with way too much 18xx goodness. Very excited for 1860 as it’s often cited as one of the better low-player-count 18xx games.

  • 1837: Rail Building in the Austro-Hungarian Empire – I really enjoyed 1824 and want to see where it came from

  • Harzbahn 1873 – highly rated 18xx game with some interesting mechanisms. Thematically, very similar to 1837 and 1824.

  • 1822CA – I have 1822, unplayed. I heard 1822CA was a shorter, sweeter version, which may make it more likely to get played. It was a bit of a toss-up between getting 1822CA and 1822MX, and I went with 1822CA because it seemed like a slightly friendlier map.

  • 18Chesapeake: Off the Rails – I’ve only played 18Chessie via 18xx.games, but it was sufficiently 1830-like that I wasn’t sure I actually needed to keep my copy. I had it up for sale a few times, but decided to check out Off the Rails to see if it breathes sufficient life into it to keep.

  • 18USA – the expansion version for 1817. 1817 is a HUGE box, and 18USA is a sizeable box as well. I really don’t have any business owning either, but I suspect neither will ever see a print-run again. (well, maybe 1817)

  • Flash Point: Fire Rescue with 2nd Story and Honor & Duty – bought the lot for less than the cost of the two expansions, and free shipping via BGG market promotion. The base game ended up missing some pieces and the box was damaged, so I got a partial refund to cover the cost of the base game.

  • Artefact and Bucket of Bolts – Kickstarter solo RPG finally arrived

  • Urban Sprawl – I’ve been keeping my eye open for this for a long time; seen it as low as $5 secondhand, but never bothered due to the cost of shipping. With the free shipping promotion, I managed to pick it up for practically free. A city-building game by famed designer Chad Jensen. It looks quite meaty. That’s about all I know about it, other than it’s a GMT game and the production is, per usual for GMT, very good.

  • Menara: Rituals & Ruins – this is not available anywhere in the US, but I managed to have Amazon.de send me a copy for a reasonable price.

  • Some Promo Cards – there was a promo auction and I picked up a few promos I didn’t already have for a reasonable price. Fantastic Factories, Fields of Green, and Dungeon Party

  • Advanced Guildhall Fantasy: The Gathering – completes the collection; this has the updated rulebook

  • Torres – A very old design with a very solid production by Kramer & Kiesling. I love the tactility of this.

  • Planet Unknown – Kickstarter arrival! Very excited for this one. It’s quite a bit larger than I expected; I thought it would be TTR-sized, but it’s bigger in all dimensions

  • Louis XIV – one of the ā€œold classicsā€ that I had ignored, but recently it popped up on my radar and I grabbed a copy at a nice price.

  • V-Commandos w/RĆ©sistance and Secret Weapons – quite proud of this one, actually. Yeah, it’s the old branding; my cards and boxes say ā€œV-Commandosā€ instead of ā€œV-Sabotageā€. I bought a very low-cost bundle secondhand. I think it means the practicality of me integrating future V-Sabotage products with my base game is limited, unless I go with opaque sleeves or a devil-may-care attitude towards seeing the different card backs. Still, a really low price for a lot of content. I had a slight hope that it would turn out to be the Kickstarter edition of the base game, featuring an extra mission or two? And some additional terrain tiles, I think. Oh well, if I like it enough, I can always go track down a V-Sabotage bundle and resell this.

As of right now, I have a few pre-orders placed for some retail things, and some Kickstarter projects threatening to fulfill in the next few months, but outside of those details, I’m done buying, unless a particularly good deal comes along (like what happened with V-Commandos). We’ll see how long that lasts.

I think that, since the forced name change happened after the last KS campaign, there’s no ā€œV-Sabotageā€ in print yet. I may be wrong.

KS extra material is some characters and some missions, but I think no terrains. Terrain tiles are purely cosmetic; you can use any tile of the right size and indoor/outdoorness.

Over the week-end, I headed out to Laval, a nearby city very close to MontrĆ©al (close enough that a lot of people think it’s just part of it) to see Judas Priest on their 50th anniversary tour (show was AWESOME, for the record).

While there, I made a pit stop at Le valet d’cœur, an institution as far as board games stores go. I was working with limited space, so I only purchased one game, Fire Rescue (localized in French as Au feu!, for the record.

Gonna be fun!

I think 1822CA is a longer game than 1822. I was tempted as it’s in my top covers for AAG mass printings. I didn’t think I could justify another behemoth. If it is a shorter form I could be tempted again… Any source?

Ooh! You are correct! I guess it’s 1822MX that is shorter and sweeter.

Maybe I made a mistake. Although, '22MX is by Scott Peterson… not sure how I feel about his games yet.

Well, hopefully I can start getting these games played, so that I can start whittling down my 18xx collection… right now it is beyond absurd for someone who doesn’t have an 18xx gaming group.

I think I just made my first SUSD-adjacent purchase? On the strength of the opinions I’ve seen from people who definitely bought and played Long Shot The Dice Game on the strength of the opinions of the SUSD crew, I bought and look forward to playing Long Shot The Dice Game. Looks cute, hope it’s fun for friend/family games.

Okay I’m reading the rules of NewAzul (queens garden) and it feels like the game has lost its soul a bit.

Hopefully I’m turned around in play but I feel like the Azul name conveys more than just the nice tiles that come in. If you get an Azul you’re getting something that you can show your dad or whatever.

This game feels like they grafted azul onto calico onto castles of Tuscany onto something with costs. Yuk.

Is a game I bought recently. The box contained a startling amount of cardboard, and an entirely inadequate selection of zip-lock plastic bags with which to (fail to) separate large quantities of slightly-different-looking cat tokens.

I initially made the mistake of assuming what they’d provided would be suitable, before realising that I actually wanted at least twice as many smaller bags (which fortunately I happened to have).

I haven’t played anything but OG Azul, but several of my gaming buddies like OG the best because it’s got no extra fluff

My copy is going to arrive sometime today.

I already found the previous incarnation with the diamond shaped tiles had departed from what made Azul a good game to try out on the parent generation (or for that matter anyone not quite so familiar with boardgames).

I am curious, I like the hex shape so much and the garden theme/green color speaks to me more than the previous two.

When owning only one of these games so far I would always recommend Azul OG. My favorite until now is Stained Glas of Sintra which adds just a few wrinkles and has this wonderful added mechanism for resetting to the left.

Right now I only have OG Azul. I will see how Hex-Azul gets along this week-end

I feel like after getting rid of the later two Azul games I feel like on some intellectual level I prefer Summer Pavillion (3) but I was reminded about the cool person movement from Sintra(2) and I really want to give that one another go.

Hidden Leaders is here.

Pledged on 10 May 2021, original ETA end January 2022.

I have forgotten almost everything about this game since I pledged for it…

Ooo, I want to know all about Rise of Ix. That’s an expensive but interesting expansion.
