Rounding out my January purchases, I have now received my copies of Blitzkreig! (the Paolo Mori one, with the Nippon expansion and solo rules) and Night of the Living Dead: a Zombicide Game plus the Ghosts of Saltmarsh expansion for the D&D Adventure System games. I’ve only had time to try the first two games once each and both seem great but need more plays - and me to remember a key rule of NotLD - to make certain.
What what?
I think the actual message was along the lines of: any additional printings would be an exceptional occurrence.
He says he’d rather, once that shelf space was freed up in the warehouse, dedicate it to new designs.
This is, of course, due to the fact that he doesn’t distribute to retailers and uses Quartermaster (in the US, I don’t recall the European partner) as a drop-shipping service.
He is literally paying rent on the shelf space that his unsold games are occupying so that he can sell them at full MSRP, rather than selling them wholesale and letting distributors and retailers worry about the physical inventory problem
Makes sense, I might readjust my 18XX priorities a bit.
Thanks to @lalunaverde I’m now the proud owner of Kemet: Blood and Sand (in a PayPal dispute to get a refund on our less successful Kemet purchase).
Also waiting for my ebay buy of Cosmic Encounter. which I’m very much looking forward to.
Keyflower arrived last week (had a 3 player game last night). Doodle Dash is also awaiting a play
To round off my no way work stress induced splurge have pre-ordered Longshot: The Dice Game.
No games bought in 2021. 5 in a fortnight in 2022!
Technically still January when I won it but I got a lightly damaged copy of Art Decko in an auction, so that arrived today.
Does buying 500 boardgame sleeves count? I’m sick of running out so I bulk bought.
It’s these ones…
The box they come in is genuinely useful. It’s made sorting things like gloomhaven very easy, and when we build decks for games - instant storage!
These are my favourite sleeves, they’re matte too
So last night after seeing the post about the new SUSD review, I may have panic-clicked on the BUY button of my already filled cart… I‘ve been circling a couple of games for a good little while now. And at that shop Mind MGMT had just come back in stock a couple days ago, I didn‘t want to order from vacation. And I might have postponed buying it for a couple of months to sell more stuff first. But seeing how this is not a really big publisher (at least not one I knew previously), I considered the SUSD effect and predict that it will be out of stock for a good while when current copies are sold. Right now the shop still seems to have copies.
So I bought
- Mind MGMT
- Bad Company (another Zee recommendation that I am keen to check out. Supposedly a bit like Space Base, and my partner really wanted it for the heist theme and me for the solo mode)
- The last missing Space Clank! Expansion so I can start building my insert so we can actually comfortably set up a game
Do I feel like I am failing at downsizing my collection? A bit. I‘ll have to put 2 more games on the sell-list now. Because I was precisely at 200 before this shopping spree.
Ah and after buying the game, I watched the review. I think I‘ll like this game a lot. Remind me to play really badly when I teach this to my partner.
I snagged a physical copy of Maquis yesterday. I bought it from a local store I generally try to avoid, but I had to make an exception here. I played the app for a good long time back when it released, so it’s nice to finally have this in a format I prefer, and after a good number of years since last playing. The production is what I’d describe as a “quaint stunner”, with minimal components and a tiny footprint, but still presenting an elegant visual and tactile experience.
Maquis is a consistently stressful 20 minutes. It’s not a game I’ll always want to reach for in the wee hours of the evening/morning (when I’m likely to play), but it scratches a pretty unique itch when I do. I’ve probably played over 200 board games since I last dabbled with the app, and it still stands out as something a bit special.
I stated in another thread that I was not in a buying mood right now, but that is only partly true. One of my game designer acquaintances, a professor of wargame design at Georgetown University, produced a game modelling littoral combat operations in the Indo-Pacific for the USMC last year. Initially, it was only available to Marine Corps units and DoD defense education programs, but I told him that if it ever got published commercially I would buy a copy. He sent me a link two weeks ago, and it is up for pledging on the Dietz Foundation website. I’ve pledged for a copy ($65.00 + $10.00 S&H within CONUS) and I’m including a link for anyone else here who might be interested.
ADDENDUM (Feb. 8): It would appear that the pledge goal was met. That link now takes you to a simple order page. The retail price is $70.00US plus S&H.
I found myself in a buying spree.
Fortress America - dice chucking Ameritrash that is well regarded, so I am keen to see what this is about.
Take It Higher - dirt cheap Knizia from eBay
Telestrations - someone offered low on eBay.
Someone sold Railways of the World 10th Anniversary for a good price. Bought Europe and Great Britain expansions as well.
Stockpile: Epic Edition - stock holding game. Also bought 2nd hand.
Lancashire Railway - Martin Wallace game that a club member was selling.
I should eliminate 6 in return for this soon.
I love Fortress America! Here is a link to a pretty good strategy guide for the game. It focuses on the FF version, but works for the Milton Bradley edition too (for the most part, anyway).
I just bought both expansions after realizing that it is now my second favorite game. They say Merchants spices the game up at lower player counts and Farmers at higher.
Farmers is fortunately still available here in the States. Had to ship Merchants from the UK (Zatu) but the price was reasonable nonetheless.
I played this in the late 80’s. For some reason I think it got a second edition rehash? I barely remember it other than trying to build laser satellites in Utah.
Sorry, triple posting because three different topics and I don’t know how to format the multi-quote thing.
Seems relevant, as I’m inquiring about the next game I’m GOING to buy. I’m looking for some date-night fare. Something not competitive, preferably that tells a story or has a campaign. Light and quick. The Crew would be great, if it played well at 2. Oh My Goods + Longsdale is the kind of thing I’m looking for, but a game that is actually good (I sold OMG last year). The Quiet Year is perfect. Star Realms co-op challenges. That sort of thing.
Any ideas?
If you like The Quiet Year, then there’s also The Deep Forest by the same designer. Another somewhat similar RPG is Alone Among the Stars. For an actual boardgame you could try Fog of Love?
- The Crew: Mission Deep Sea has a 2 player mode that we enjoyed quite a bit some time back. But YMMV. And I think it is the same mode as Crew 1.
- We’re playing a campaign of My City currently, it’s not very interactive. But that’s a plus for us at 2 players.
- Codenames Duett is cooperative. We haven’t played as much as I wanted to b/c during the Pandemic Codenames became our goto distanced game with friends and so the 2 player variant suffered neglect.
- While I am recommending wordgames: I like Hardback at 2 players a lot. There is also a cooperative mode that is quite challenging.
Now I’m trying to remember the Milton Bradley Gamemaster series. It was 6 “Risk”-y games.
1: Risk
2: Axis & Allies
3: ?
4: Fortress America
5: Shogun → Samurai Swords → Ikusa
6: Buck Rogers
Did anyone else play these? I had (have) Axis & Allies. My friend had Fortress America and Buck Rogers, but we were kids and back then you’d only tell people half the rules and none of the strategy if it was YOUR game so you’d win.
I’m going to cave and do a google search.
Edit: Wow. Looks like Buck Rogers has nothing to do with Gamemaster (though admittedly similar mechanics). And moreover my memories of Buck Rogers are mixed with the I.Q. 2000 board. MEMORY. Sheesh.
Yeah, I own all of them
The fifth entry was Broadsides and Boarding Parties, a two player game featuring gigantic plastic boats, which was discontinued before the second printing of the series in 1991.
Fortress America is the best of the lot, imo, closely followed and in many ways exceeded by Shogun.
A&A was my first real game, though, so it’s the only one I’ve played more than once (not counting multi-handing).
