Mayday are doing their Kickstarter for a a Crokinole board now. I don’t have room to store it unfortunately

One of these days I will discover what is all about that Crockinole… I still haven’t a clue how it works.

By the way, admins, can I have Discoverer of final scoring / Honorary Canadian Citizen as a tag line?

That will definitely confuse even more people.

Imagine competitive golf, but you get multiple balls and you can use yours to knock your opponents away. Also, it uses discs instead of balls. And instead of a big grassy course, it’s just played on a wooden wheel with a small hole in the center.

Similar to that. Quinns did a great review of it a bit ago: Crokinole - Shut Up & Sit Down Review - YouTube

So like concentrical curling, but without ice and sweeping??

I played marbles as a kid a lot. To the point that my mother would stick knee pads on new trousers as default when I was in my first few years in school. Sounds the hell of a lot like it, but with discs instead of marbles and wood instead of concrete…

There are two things id be concerned with Crokinole - 1 is there a person you will get good with that you know. 2- the skill ceiling seems pretty low. I was watching some players play and it seems like the expectation is to only ever hit the same shot. It’s a bit like bar billiards in that sense.

Maybe it does take ages to get that good but the challenge to get good seems like it’s to be good at a very narrow number of actions.

That’s not what I’d call a skill ceiling. Also, the actual skill ceiling for Crokinole is way higher than the vast majority of boardgames. Getting to the point where you can do that is not something that will ever actually happen, and being able to get around problems that occur is the thing to master subsequently.

That said, I am not a Crokinole player.

Nailed it on the head though. The journey to that degree of skill is long (and for most, neverending). Darts has a similar “problem”. So does bowling. Even baseball technically has the same problem. These are games meant to be played perfectly. The fun is in the fact that perfection is so rare, and the dynamism that creates.

Wanna note that this comparison was brought to you by someone VERY GOOD at hitting the drywall. Sorry dad.

Just got back from my FLGS, where I spent my Christmas money! Got two things. Anticipating great fun!

The Loop, it was featured in a “best of” list and I’ve had a hankerin’ for a new coop.

Bitoku, it’s been burned in my mind since SU&SD did a preview during AwSHUX.

Speaking of the latter, the game itself is text-less, but if someone has access to a French version of the rules, or at least the player aids (my game only came with English and Spanish) and would be willing to scan 'em and e-mail 'em to me (or send me a link), that would make my life way easier, we’d be forever grateful and recommend you to all our friends!

Just had to follow up on the Spirit Island purchase. It’s a bit personal, buying a used game. You open up the box and learn a lot about the prior owner by what you see.

I’m sifting through this box, and first it’s, “Ok. Everything sorted and bagged. So they were some level of gam-- WHAT THE $%%# THE MAJOR AND MINOR POWER DECKS ARE MIXED AND STORED ACROSS THREE BAGS WHAT KIND OF MONSTER AM I DEALING WITH.”

Bought Cartographers today, BUT it is a present for a friend, not for me! I am now determined to hold out for Ra or a new Unmatched set before purchasing any new games.

Expansions, on the other hand…

I won 1856: Railroading in Upper Canada from 1856 from eBay for a decent price (for a rare item) - unfortunately, Kingston cannot be seen on the map. I heard that a couple of dorks who runs a board game review podcast lives there.

Anansi - bought SUSD mentioned it on that small card game review part deux video.

Ooohhh, that’s so wrong. I don’t have the cards bagged, but they go on different piles to reduce mixing if the box moves too much.

Sneaking in just before I buy nothing extraneous for a month (including nicer coffees at work etc.) I bought Imperium: Legends

My pre-order of Three Sisters arrived today. Time to combine both of my hobbies! :corn: :game_die:

Bought Keyflower after an excellent BGA play and Doodle Dash because the podcast made it sound like good fun.

I have been obsessed with it since mine arrived. COMBOS! COMBOS! COMBOS!

Also, pretty.

The combos are very satisfying!

Things have been a bit crazy, what with a very pregnant partner occupying much of my free time/energy, followed now by a new baby. That hasn’t stopped me, apparently, from buying a few things; but it has distracted from me discussing the newest acquisitions here.

Space Cadets: Away Missions

I’ve heard about this for a long time but was ultimately somewhat confused for quite a while because I thought it was more closely related to the other Space Cadets-series designs. Eventually I figured out that it was just a poor decision by the publisher to brand this under the Space Cadets franchise. Glad to have a copy because it seems to not be getting a reprint.

The Crew: Quest for Planet Nine

I love trick-taking games and I’ve heard nothing but great things about this. The intended audience for this one is actually my in-laws, who have both shown an interest in trick-taking traditional card games.

Fast & Furious: Highway Heist

Clearly not the greatest game ever… but: Family

Kemet: Blood and Sand

Picked this up for a really good price after keeping an eye on it and its predecessor for a long while (though, now, you can pick up Kemet' for a song)

Dungeon of Fortune

Another push-your-luck dungeon delve. This one, I think was a bit of “retail therapy” but instead of retail, it was secondhand BGG auction low-ball bidding.

Wits & Wagers

I already had W&W Party edition, but I wanted the version with the playmat; and I’ll probably combine the two boxes.

18NewEngland

After learning that 18NewEngland was likely getting a mini-expansion for a 2/3-player map, I decided to pick up the copy now because Scott from All-Aboard has said his games are unlikely to get reprints (due to the inefficient retail model he uses, I’m pretty sure)

1882: Assiniboia

While picking up 18NewEngland, I grabbed this one as well for the shipping economy. I recently played it for the first time on 18xx.games and thought it was an interesting game, but I hope it shines a bit more in-person (which, it should, because it’s designed to be short and bitter (or maybe sweet, depending on how the game goes for you))

Awkward Guests

I regret backing out of my Kickstarter pledge for this one, since I love deduction games as much as I do. Finally found a secondhand copy for a decent price

King Chocolate

Heard great things about this one, even if it is rather abstract. Great price and good shipping

Rhino Hero

Added to my collection of “games waiting for my kids to get just a bit older”

Fairy Tale

After hearing about this so much from SVWAG, I grabbed an older copy on the cheap

Kanban EV

I’ve been watching for secondhand copies of this for a long time, but I rarely see them popup; and when they do, they cost more than just buying it from the publisher or a certain Kickstarter-Game-Reseller online merchant… so I bought it from the latter. I have too many untested Lacerdas still, and this just makes it worse… but I will just sell off whichever ones don’t make the cut (I doubt this will be on that list… but who knows)

Dale of Merchants 3

Grabbed this along with Kanban EV since I had already hit the free shipping threshhold. This completes my Dale of Merchants collection.

Along with those purchases, a few Kickstarters arrived as well:

Merchants of the Dark Road

I really like Brian Suhre’s fishing-themed games and I’ve heard a bit of hype for this one. If I had more energy and/or sleep at night, I would already have gotten this played solo. Fingers crossed I can get it out soon.

Petrichor: Cows w/ Petrichor Collector’s Edition et al

I was so excited for this one, both for solo as well as introducing it to my partner. It’s a shame, then, that it arrived at a time in my life that I just don’t have the energy for it. Still, the theme is so chill, I couldn’t help but at least watch a solo-playthrough video on Youtube to quell my excitement until I the little one starts sleeping a bit better at night.

Not purchased, but received Alien: Fate of the Nostromo as a gift. Have not heard much positive about it here, but hoping for the best. If nothing else, I like the idea of having an Ellen Ripley mini.
