Last game you bought?

I don’t know much about the IP either, but I can confirm it is very much on brand based on the contents of this box. Really neat stuff. Lots of playing around with the idea that this is no game.

After seeing the game on Kickstarter, I read the series. It is surreal, subversive, and deadly. I’m not sure I could tell you what it was about, exactly, but I agree with VictorViper: that image does seem absolutely on-brand.

Funny how things pan out sometimes. I was chatting the other day with @yashima, asking for advice as I was undecided about getting either Spirit Island or the Underworld Expansion of Root. She gave me great advice, which I treasured. I actually have been playing the SI app on my phone, and although is really tough, I am really enjoying it.

This week, first the Underworld Expansion appeared on sale second hand in the trade group in Facebook at a really decent price, but I said to myself “You bought games recently, let it go”. So I did (I believe it has been sold, I cannot find it any more) showing I have some willpower.

Yesterday a copy of Spirit Island appeared at a very good price. I pm’d the guy to see how much it would be the shipping. A mere 5 bucks.

So now I am the owner (as soon as it reaches home, I guess) of Spirit Island.

And I am leaving the FB group. Because I have some willpower, but not enough, it seems.

I ran out and grabbed a copy of Dream Crush today as a birthday present for a friend of mine (FLGS listed limited stock). I think it’s the kind of game that would hit well for her (and some of our mutual) friends, and it seems she’s even been buying herself an “experience” game here and there for hosting. I’m not one to deny a burgeoning habit.

HOBBY! I meant hobby.

Been doing some good old trading again.

I got 1844/1854, Tokyo Tsukiji Market, Tulip Bubble, and Trick of the Rails. All are economic style games. I’m sensing a pattern here…

Also, I got an unpunched unused Napoleon’s Triumph using my Roads & Boats money! I believe I got some willing victims now to play this.

Quite a deal! I recommend dabs of superglue on the flags to keep them on the metal flagpoles. The degradation of the sticker glue and/or oxidizing of the metal means they tend to slide off otherwise.

I would love to play a 6 player game of this. The rules for delayed orders are very juicy.

Latest arrivals:

  • Imperium Classic and Legends because it‘s a Civ game and a deck builder and too many reviewers seemed to enjoy it so much. Also FOMO because Osprey distribution is really weird outside of UK and games sometimes become unavailable for quite some time and these seemed to be the final copies…
  • Fort — to pad the Imperium order and also a year later many people still seem to be enjoying this (also needed something so the next game wouldn‘t feel so lonely on the orange shelf)
  • Don‘t get got SUSD edition from the Kickstarter arrived

Coffee Traders arrived, and if this production was an attempt to edge in on Eagle-Gryphon’s little ultra-deluxe heavyweight niche, then they’ve sure thrown down the gauntlet. I’ve owned a lot of Capstone games over the years and this is far and away their most lavish box—they went big absolutely all over.

Unfortunately I’ve had to put in a minor missing component request, but it’s not something that will keep me from playing the game, and I’m confident I’ll be taken care of quickly besides.

This is a huge box with no insert and over 600 components, but it all packs up in just a few baggies. This will probably prove to be the most ideal storage solution anyway; the box is so dense with cardboard your only real option would be foamcore [or 3D printed].

Anyway, it’s going to be a dense read and by many accounts, a fairly poor one. I have quite a few games I want to table before this one, but I’ll start my homework early, I think.

I have been slipping with my goal of not buying more stuff until I clean up my collection… retail therapy, mostly. But, I do have my first game night in… gosh, over a year and a half… scheduled for this coming Sunday. So we’re gonna call that a win.

Dream Crush and Red Cathedral were both picked up on the strength of the SU&SD reviews. I also nabbed The Search for Planet X and Beyond the Sun for much the same reasons, but also because they were out of print for some time and then suddenly came back.

I’ve held off of picking up My City for a little bit, but I think I may nab it too. But maybe not… I dunno. I dunno! We’ll see.

I believe Germaine Greer and Barry Humphries had moments in a Dadaist group in Melbourne.

Just ordered the expansion for Istanbul, Mocha and Baksheesh. I have heard really good things about it, and we’ve been playing the game more often that I feel justified in purchasing the expansion.

My local FLGS had Atlantis Rising in stock and I couldn’t resist this time around. We’ll see if my partner will go in for it, but otherwise I’m hoping it’s a decent solo.

I have ordered my first professional, non-hobbyist wargame. Awhile back I made mention of Rand Corporation’s Hedgemony, a tabletop game designed to simulate modern regional conflict for staff level military and government players. It has the distinction of being the first game in Rand’s long history of wargame design to be offered to the general public, and is currently available through their bookstore (link below). I think that from our shared perspective, it has three fundamental drawbacks:

  1. It’s rather expensive.
  2. It’s designed for detailed classroom analysis, not to provide a fun experience.
  3. Despite the cost, I’m pretty sure the component quality is going to be pretty “basic”.

Nevertheless, as the first ever publicly available Rand game, it dovetails nicely with my interest in the history of games (especially conflict simulations) as training aids. That alone makes it a worthwhile addition to my collection. Frankly, I can’t wait to see it when it finally gets here!

I got so frustrated with my kids today that I rage-preordered Descent:Legends of the Dark. We’ll see if I cancel it after a good night’s sleep.

Big, big boxes all 'round. I took home Cloudspire this afternoon. Now to spend 30 minutes learning to play, and many weeks and sessions to ingrain all the keywords.

In a bit of a surprise twist my Aqua Garden pledge arrived without being held up in customs?

It looks really pretty…

We‘ll find out later how much fun building an aquarium really is.

As for the Kickstarter FOMO: I think with shipping I paid just a tiny bit less than what the game now costs on one of the OGS that does these kinds of pledges…

Wow. I ordered Hedgemony about 20 hours ago and it just arrived. I’ll say this for RAND, they could give lessons on how to package a board game for shipment. Absolutely top-notch job. The game itself is a bit of a brute and weighs in at 7lbs. 11oz. (Just under 3.5 Kilos). Quality is actually very high. All counters are laser-cut, and the cards and tables are heavy stock. I’m pleasantly surprised that the map is mounted rather than paper. As expected, it is jargon and acronym heavy, so the glossary is a necessary addition.

Addendum: I know this is obvious from the photos, but I feel that it is necessary for me to point out that the game is very…beige.
