Last game you bought?

Well, I didn’t buy them, but since…

I received the Marvel Champions Galaxy’s Most Wanted expansion, as well as theStar-Lord, Gamora, and Drax Hero packs. Looking forward to getting into 'em.

I think that’s probably going to be the crux of the problem for a lot of people who don’t get on with it. At the end of the day, you’re playing suits into a stack, not determining guilt or innocence in any meaningful way.

I can appreciate that, personally, since I don’t want to be buying new cases as nauseum (cases are infinitely replayable as it stands), but I don’t have much in the way of expectations with regard to the “courtroom drama” that will unfold.

[EDIT] Forgot my reason to pop in! I traded a couple of small games today, and put the proceeds toward Merchants Cove. This is very much a try-and-see purchase. We’ll see how it works out, eventually.

Happy birthday. Enjoy!

Bought Hyperborea, Curios, Electropolis

Got Cube Quest for cheap, and it was great fun. The problem is that the neoprene mats don’t lay flat because they’ve been folded up so bad (publisher’s fault). I bought a small art tube online to roll the mat instead and put the game inside there, since it’s just a bunch of dice and a couple of mats

Got some money from my parents for my birthday, so took a little and ordered Spirit Island: Branch and Claw which should arrive tomorrow. Would like to get Jagged Earth as well, but can’t find it for retail price anywhere right now.

Asmodee had a promotion where if you bought 2 games (including all expansions) from 7 specific lines (Catan, Carcassonne, 7 Wonders, Unlock!, Spot It, Timeline, and Werewolves of Miller Hollow) you received a 3rd game for free. Most of those aren’t my bag, although they’re certainly not bad titles, but I did spurge on getting 3 Unlock sets (Timeless, Epic, and Mythic). 9 Unlocks for the price of 4 Exits was just too good of a deal for me to pass on.

I also picked up Cubitos, and I look forward to trying it at some point in the near future. I love racing games, I love dice games, and I love high RNG games with low overhead that I can teach and play with my less heavy-loving friends. Hopefully Cubitos scratches all those itches.

… but now I have to decide to keep Quodd Heroes or not, because do I really need two cube-based race games? Plus, the rules for Quodd Heroes are awful. I mean, there is probably a good game in there, but the first time I tried to learn it made zero sense. I’ll give it another stab, but yeah, we will see.

Needed to grab a last minute present for a friend, so threw in Nanga Parbat for myself to make me feel better about the shipping cost.

Bought the expansion for Nidavellir (Thingvellir), and needed to add something to get free delivery, so added Switch and Signal

Another GMT P500 surprise has arrived:

I quite enjoyed the SpaceCorp bit sold it as it was a bit samey to me.

I’d love to know if this adds a bit of variety.

I didn’t even remember ordering it, but I checked and I did.

As a combination of A) me relenting after listening to SVWAG for so long and finally catching up on their “Best Games of 2020” episode and B) a bit of a treat for myself for my birthday (2 weeks ago), I grabbed my phone and found a surprisingly good deal on:

For What Remains – Streets of Ruin – Egads! I am so impressed by this production! It packs, what looks to be, a full-fledged skirmish tactics game into a slightly-thicker-than-Pandemic box; we don’t need miniatures! These cardboard chits are perfect and the modular map tiles are phenomenal. Based on Mark Bigney’s glowing review of FWR as a soloable skirmish game, I am very excited.

Cthulhu: Death May Die – On the exact opposite of the spectrum, this boardgame has miniatures for some reason. Regardless, the SVWAG boys have waxed lyrical about this game so many times; and even though I know I can’t get the scenario they love (aliens abducting goats or something?), and knowing they think very poorly of the Season 1 Chapter 1 scenario, I am still looking forward to what this enormous box has in store (perhaps: a dungeon crawl with shotguns? I do have very few “dungeon crawl” games.)

Also, a BGG user recently reached out via trade proposal and, for once, it was amenable! They were offering Space Empires 4X (2nd printing) in exchange for my spare copy of Concordia (I upgraded to the Concordia Venus standalone version, because I wanted the larger box to hold my expansion maps). Space Empires 4X doesn’t come up very much… it’s quite old by many standards, but it seems to have a very dedicated fanbase – and when it does come up, it’s usually in the context of “what 4x boardgame actually feels like a 4x game?” and “are there any 4x board games that you can play solo?”. So for the price of shipping (a very large) Concordia to California, I received a very svelte 2-inch GMT box packed with hundreds of counters and, perhaps(?), hundreds of funs.

Those last two are very down my alley. C:DMD is a barrel of fun. I cannot wait to play it again, but the guy who owns it in our Gaming group is often away in Christchurch.

I had actually backed this for a short stint during the campaign, but bailed when I started to realize what grabbing the full collection would represent on my shelf. Even without minis it was going to be a commitment.

I could have just bought the first installment, but the deal for the works was so good I just opted to bail. Stings a bit now that there’s seriously high praise to go with it.

And the KS exclusives are unbelievably hard to find without paying exorbitant prices.

So much fun! I remember when it was first announced, and I thought “Cthulhu? Really? Again?”, but SVWAG made me get it. And it’s great fun, love it! And I’m not too worried about the KS content that I’ll never see, there’s still a lot there with Season 2.

So what is the difference between Cthulhu: Death May Die and Cthulhu Wars? Seems like they came out around the same time. Saw the SU&SD CW review, but have not seen anything on DMD

Risk and Hero Quest?? On very broad strokes.

C:DMD puts a group of adventurers to stop an Old One to be introduced into our reality by hampering the summoning. So you will have a first part of the game where no one can die, and you target a number of goals (normally altars or labs) that need to be destroyed before the Old One completes the change over. You enter a scenario with cultists and minor monsters that will try to stop you.

Then after that, you have to destroy the weakened Old One. Plus you upgrade your powers through going insane in a mechanism that actually works pretty well.

This seems roughly accurate.

Honestly, I thought I would end up with Cthulhu Wars before I added C:DMD to my collection. But I just added War of the Ring instead, so CW can wait for a bit… Maybe until I can buy up a secondhand collection on the cheap.

By the way, if you play solo, it is very easy to play with multiple characters. Even if you are only two players, go for multi-hero, two each.
