I’ve read the first book, Prisoners of Geography. Interesting read, but with some caveats.
I thought Prisoners was fantastic. I’m not a geographer so don’t have my own or other competing opinions other than what I read. I’ve enjoyed his other books.
For Father’s Day, my partner went to our FLGS with our kids and they each picked something for me:
-
Pass the Pandas – chosen by my youngest primarily, likely, because at was at her height. An inoffensive dice chucker with almost no decisions to be made. Perhaps a key redeeming factor is the components are relatively kid-proof and I was able to open it and “play” a game with my kids.
-
Nine Tiles Panic – chosen by my oldest, likely due to the vibrant colors. I recall being underwhelmed when SUSD covered it; but now that I have a copy, I’ll be happy to give it a go… But I really wish my partner hasn’t paid full price for it ($45 after tax)
-
NuzaoZendo – my partner went into the store with my Amazon wishlist pulled up, but she was in a hurry and Zendo was the first thing she could find from the list. I’m very happy to finally have a copy as I very rarely see it pop up on the secondary markets, and when it does, it is just as expensive as new copies.
Bonus: new Gaslands cars!
Tim Marshall is great.
Just picked up My First Scythe for Father’s Day. My kids all promised they would play, but I suspect it was a plot to get the minis for themselves.
This hefty box arrived today. Looking forward to finding some time to spread everything out, soak up the rules and start a small campaign.
Just a couple…Pan Am, Dutch Blitz, Wind the Film, and Tournament at Avalon
Another pair of solo wargames have just arrived, both Napoleonic themed. Napoleon at the Berezina is a full game in an old copy of Against the Odds magazine, whilst Rifles is a ziploc bag game. The lack of a box reduces the shelf space requirements significantly.

So I had an RPG starter set in my Amazon wishlist.
I noticed it was halfprice (£20 → £10)
And that is how I now own My Little Pony: Tails of Equestria
Part of a big ol’ trade, I now own Too Many Bones along with the upgraded health tokens and a few silly promos. I can barely close my closet for the box, so I’m going to find a good de-boxing solution for it as soon as I can find a good case for the chips. I mean Jesus, what format is this?
Carrying on in that tradition I hope died yesterday, I also brought home Escape Plan, which I am super stoked about, aside from the ridiculous-if-lovely box.
Too many bones is a beast of a box. It does nicely store any extra characters you may pick up though. So far I have the child and the ally promo but none of the characters to use those ally’s. I’m going to need to do something about that.
I was weak and wanted to support my local games store, so I bought 3 new hero packs for Marvel Champions.
Starlord has the most fun mechanic: he can give himself enemy cards that don’t activate just yet, do amazing things while they sit there, and then his brilliant plan goes to absolute hell at the end of the round when they all activate and you find out if he took on too much and needs rescuing. That’s… very cleverly thematic, actually.
Gamora is excellent at attacking and thwarting at the same time but doesn’t give a monkey’s about leadership or protection. Looks like a very strong fighter, but terrible at teamwork, which fits.
Drax gets angry when he’s attacked by the main villain, and gets bonus to revenge - but only on the main villain. He ignores minions.
All of these plug gaps which haven’t been covered before and actually sound great.
Oooh, those do sound like fun. I was thinking of picking up Galaxy’s Most Wanted at some point, or at least throwing it on a birthday gift wishlist, but I’ve still got some heroes and scenarios that I have not even played yet, so it’s not high priority. The other Guardians are sounding really fun though.
Can confirm the Guardian heroes are all tons of fun. I probably like Drax the most right now, just because his risk-reward balance feels less frustrating than Star-Lord solo, but I really like all of them. The scenarios in Galaxy’s Most Wanted are a little hit-or-miss for me (some of them are frustratingly difficult), but the heroes have been consistently excellent.
Picked up Jaws during Prime day.
Reasons!
-Because it can play 2 player
-I plan on calling the shark Glom Gold Jr.
-It was $8.44 plus a dollar of digital credit, I really couldn’t resist.
-wifey points.
I picked up Chinatown to reach free shipping. Some version of math suggests it was then $6 off?
I’m not crazy about it, though I do enjoy it and don’t have anything else like it. Really I thought it would be a good game for the kids when they get older - life lessons and life skills. I’ve got a whole section of the shelves dedicated to things that I think teach you how to be a person in ways you just can’t get from a lecture or book.
Why is Chinatown in print in the US? Why not here? Here it’s a stupid rarity… I’d buy but not for 60€ used…
Bought Saga and Cavum, both designed by K&K. Cavum got good reception from my geek buddies. Saga: not so much.
there is a new K&K on the listings … something something Savannah… with Deep Print Games like Renature. Looks nice
Edit: Savannah Park | Board Game | BoardGameGeek
Found it when searching olgs for other Kramer games randomly…
So for Father’s Day weekend, an OGS I’ve checked out a few times had a site wide 20% off sale, and combined with the lowest Free Shipping minimum I know of ($59) I broke down and finally grabbed Babylonia during the sale, and added in Outlive for about 65-70% off. I’ve heard good things about both so I’m eager to get them played… eventually!
