Last game you bought?

Was weak. Bought Firefly and the Artful Dodger expansion… Cannot wait for them to arrive from Ozz

I bought a bunch of Ashes Reborn. I didn’t really have a choice, accidentally bought a deck that needs the deluxe expansions, so of course I had to buy those too…

Ooh. You’re relatively local-ish to me, aren’t you? (West of London, have car.)

I mean you’ll beat me hollow, but…

Nope, I’m in Manchester. But whenever I’m down in London next I will destroy you! Or Stabcon North if you’re about!

Decided (almost on a whim, as I had the opportunity to do it all at once) to sell the full first arc of Race for the Galaxy and put some of the funds towards Alien Artifacts. Should suitably mess my card knowledge up playing IRL.

Also secured a boxless copy of Razzia (Knizzzzzia) for £10. Basically Ra without distasters.

Concept, Targi and Jaipur have arrived from @Captbnut (thanks!)

Used the rest of the money from my RftG expulsion to buy Scape Goat, some of the more critical reviewers are positive about it, so worth a post COVID play.

I caved and bought all the games that I’ve been watching for probably a year and that were never available anywhere but the place I don’t want to buy anymore. But I did.

The last one actually came from co.uk without much of a delay at all (on the other hand my oink games KS package has been at Frankfurt customs for more than a week now)

I already hate the box. It doesn’t open easily because the lid is on too tight and it is twice the height it needs to be. Please someone at FFG talk to Roxley how they managed to make Brass Birmingham fit into a half-height box.

There is more air in this box than is in the atmosphere of Mars

My favorite new component: oversized pokerchips

Also adding 1 to the “female only” covers. While I am at it: Escape also counts in that category and Resistance Avalon as well. So I am up 3!

It [the shopping spree] gets worse.

After figuring out that at least one copy of Scape Goat remained in a shop in Belgium… I discovered they also had other games in stock that I have been “hunting”. I will not post another picture because the stack is going to be too embarrassing.

The embarrassment will be comprised of
  • Scape Goat
  • Loot of Lima
  • The Estates
  • Ginkgopolis (I had to order this one as I keep misspelling it when searching for the game and that is such a problem, this is the one I am least sure about but I learned from a certain podcast that it has a solo mode so I should be fine)
  • also some coins and an expansion for Viticulture I don’t have yet

Happens to the best of us.

Keeping stuff on a wishlist slows my purchases for sure.

Taking a short break from Kickstarter Fulfillment Season, it’s time to discuss: pillbox was weak!

I’ve been playing my secondhand copy of Baseball Highlights 2045 solo (which is very enjoyable, even if you don’t care about baseball). My secondhand copy came sleeved, but they are UltraPro sleeves of some sort of “premium” variety… and they were getting on my nerves. Additionally, I had received a complete set of expansions for BH2k45 for my birthday and have yet to play with them because it would involve either removing all the sleeves or buying more sleeves. So, long story short, I placed an order at one of my OGS of choice for my preferred brand/style of sleeves. And, while I was at it, I bought enough to also sleeve Football Highlights 2052, which I’ve also been playing a bit.

Unfortunately”, the price of the sleeves only accounted for less than 25% of the free-shipping threshold. Now, past-pillbox never had a problem with free-shipping thresholds, so it was quite a conundrum I found myself in. Most of the games that are available retail that are on my wishlist, I’m willing to wait to receive, perhaps, as a gift for my birthday or Christmas. But I just couldn’t help myself from picking up a few items that had been dancing in and out of my shopping cart for a few months.

The Networks – my interest in this one has been growing steadily for several months now. The solo game looks very good and the humor imbued into the game looks to be just my speed. I’ve been eyeing the secondary market for quite a while and, without committing to buying multiple games to offset the cost of shipping, buying a used copy just never makes sense. So, anyway, glad to have this one in my collection; I expect to solo it very soon.

Fields of Arle – Tea & Trade – This one always seems to be out of stock when my birthday and Christmas comes around (I think that’s generally true of all Asmodee products… their print-runs just don’t align with those times of the year). Also, people generally don’t buy me expansions as gifts (can’t blame them, it doesn’t seem that exciting)

Seasons of Inis – Another Asmodee expansion that never seems to be in-stock. I’ve not actually played Inis yet, but the promise of being able to pack the base game in the expansion box bumped it up a notch. Also, it provides a more flexible player-count and a more flexible game length. Without really realizing it was an issue, I lucked out and received the new print-run that includes a replacement Action deck to address the color difference between the expansion and the base game.

Actually, Feuerland does reprints around Christmas  I ordered my copy of the expansion in December and just today canceled a part of that order which allows it to finally be fulfilled. (The shop had miscounted copies for a Clank! expansion and postponed my whole order several times).

I am looking forward to another pastoral tea-drinking afternoon of this one.

Also: expansions don’t count.

I prefer Resistance to Avalon because… look, all right, it’s not very thematic anyway, but I can picture the idea of “nobody in this resistance cell knows who’s a police spy”. (My mother-in-law, who had A Past, said “it’s easy, they’re always the ones with money”.) I find it harder to deal with “nobody knows who Mordred is”. You can get all the Avalonnic (Avalonian?) gameplay with Resistance expansions, though it gets a bit more expensive.

Haven’t soloed this since I put it on my 10×10 for… 2019? And got from “sometimes win” to “always win reliably” over the course of ten or so plays. But I like it a lot multiplayer.

Funny you should mention that.

I admit this is a case of “I saw the art and I was weak”, along with a certain feeling of wanting to encourage new designers. (Sole BGG credit both for the two designers and for Cheryl Young the artist.)

It’s basically “semi-secretly bet on gladiators, play cards on gladiators to influence the fight, collect your winnings” but it’s in a nice small box and looks like fun. We shall see. 2-5 players, best with 3-4.

I wish the Boardgame corner of Kickstarter was more focused on this. I’ve backed just a handful of “indie” designers on Kickstarter, despite that being my original plan/goal for backing games on KS. So far, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the outcome of my indie-supporting projects

Hahahaha the Quacks Big Box is RIDICULOUS, it’s RIDICULOUS, and really heavy!

Could have been the size of the original box + about a 10th. Is the size of a car instead. Ridiculous.

Also came with a missing green 4, but it’s okay, there was an extra Locoweed stuck to mine to make up for it.

Sure the green is not somewhere in the box? Happened to me a few times recently… otherwise I’d probably sharpie a 4 onto that extra piece  Or depending on the publisher mail them for an extra. Pegasus came through with that rulebook really fast.

Eh, looks like it only becomes a problem when the players have bought ALL the green fours and need the last one. Won’t happen often, and I can re-purpose one of the white spares if I need to.

I would send an email. It’s going to be an issue at some point, you’d need to remember forever more, and why take the hassle? They’ll happily replace it.
