Last game you bought?

Had a nice garden-based gaming night where we got to try out a friend’s copy of Oceans. I lost, though not by much (and I think my friend was wrong not to add in the end populations we had which means I would have won). Barely knew what I was doing, but could see the possibilities for the game were pretty crazy, so had to buy it!

I, personally, think this is about the best praise a game can get. “I played it. I’m not sure what just happened. I must have it”

So I finally cracked on the Amazon UK price insanity and bought The Quest for El Dorado: The Golden Temples, hereafter known as TQfED:TGT.

For under £20. I haven’t even played the first expansion yet, although I can play this standalone.

Bought Are You Dumber than a Box of Rocks, where you answer trivia questions against a box of rocks (all the answers are either zero, 1, or 2. Sounds pretty stupid, but it was $9, so what the hell. I expect at least an hour of fun out of it. And with my memory, I can bring it out in a years time and play it again.

How many hours of fun do you expect from it?

I expect at least an hour of fun out of it.

Answer is valid.

Took a rare Amazon risk and ordered Micro Macro from an independent seller. I suspect I am going to end up with a German edition, so we’ll see how well my high school language classes have held up. I predict that the language hurdle will only enhance the mysteries.

Feel free to ask language questions if they arise… I can surely translate words like Kriminalfallindizienfälschergehilfenverhaftung for you

So it turns out that it is dangerous to leave my husband alone in the house for an afternoon with access to the internet. A large box arrived today, containing:

  • 1862: railway mania in the eastern counties
  • Pendragon: the fall of Roman Britain
  • Saratoga 1777
  • Crystal Palace
  • Mississippi Queen
  • Tribes

My copy of Oath also arrived today

Does anyone else find buying just one game in an order utterly impossible to do?

I have somehow rationalised this weird quirk in the following ways:

Postage costs are a waste of money so I want to minimise them per game.

If one game turns out to be rubbish the whole Order isn’t a complete waste.

Saving the environment through minimising packaging

Nope, very easy to order one game. Mainly because postage costs are never free, just absorbed elsewhere at a certain level.

Frequently there isn’t another game I want to purchase with the game.

Excite!

Let me know if you have any questions. I’m a big fan of '62, but it’s a bit of a beast to internalize.

I had the benefit of having lots of time on my hands back during December of '19 to read a PDF rulebook for it (before I got my copy) while rocking my then-5-month-old to sleep at night. I literally read the rulebook cover-to-cover over the course of a week or so, on my tablet sitting in a rocking chair with a drowsy infant on my shoulder

It’s efficient, environment-friendly and mitigates disappointment! Perfectly rationalized

It’s taking advantage of our hobby is what it is.

They know we are always looking for the most optimal move, damn them.

Love to hear your thoughts on Pendragon and 1862. I have solo’d Falling Sky and it was interesting but not enough for me to keep.

Yeah falling sky is nice, but it kinda feels like a roll and write without the writing. Not quite enough puzzly feel for me, but it’s quite meditative.

Depends. If ordering from Amazon, no, as shipping is typically free. CoolStuffInc or Miniature Market, or anywhere else where shipping is free if the total is $100+, yes.

It’s not even about shipping because that is mostly free but I am kind of hunting which shop has several of the “not always available” games at the same time. This is the thing that is mainly keeping me from impulse buying everything that strikes my fancy. If I play my cards just right and finding the perfect combo of games…

I was really surprised recently when I was able to order Cubitos all by itself.
Sometimes pre-orders of big games that will break the 50€-free-shipping barrier by themselves will get a solo, too.

Ah, it’s late and maybe I am just tired. So I am better of not hitting any buy buttons now. Good night
