Well, yes, it is all about who can get the best sunburn first…
I’ll just leave this here…
Madeira -370.
Ahh, well, the first resort we went to in Mexico, between the time we booked the trip and the time we arrived, was bought by a German hospitality/resort company and they focused on European guests; our concierge spoke 6 languages and, surprisingly, English was one he rarely used (he said).
(The menus at the restaurants and room service were all in both languages: Spanish and German. I managed with the small amount of German I could muster from the one semester I took, and my partner had a bit of familiarity with Spanish, the defacto language of many restaurant kitchens where we live, from her time as a manager of a restaurant).
So, at that resort, the German influence may have carried through.
The other resort we went to a few years later was was almost exclusively targeting USians… And maybe it was less of a thing there?
It’s funny, but despite my war game orientation, I don’t think I’ve ever fought anybody in my numerous games of Scythe. It just hasn’t seemed necessary. Basically, we just maneuver around trying to undercut each other.
Granted, I’ve yet to try my copy of Rise of Fenris, so I can’t speak to that version. ![]()
Not as bad as my friend’s Seize the Bean she backed
Bought the errata pack for Versailles 1919 from someone.
Someone did another firesale batch of “old games”. So I end up with:
Alchemist (the Carlo Rossi one)
Assyria
Genesis by Knizia
Hellas by Stefan Dorra
Industry by Michael Schacht
Also, perhaps, of minor note:
I had posted on my BGG Kickstarter project tracker GeekList about my copy of Import/Export Definitive Edition, noting it was green and bore the flag of The Philippines.
A BGG user reached out, wondering if I would be willing to swap boxes, as they were quite interested in getting my Philippines flag in exchange for their Union Jack. I’m not sure there’s a flag out there that I would be aiming for, but I’m more than happy to help someone (probably?) include a little heritage on their shelf. This particular user was willing to pay shipping in both directions between here and California.
I really dislike this green color; it’s too bad it was a green-for-green swap.
The flags are literally just stickers
What?! They randomised the colour and the flag? That’s so strange!
Yep. Mine is dark grey with a Russian flag.
Well, as expected, the more I complain… the faster things happen? Usually the opposite but what do I know: I just got the notice that Oath was disptached. Normally DHL is really fast even across Germany…
Picked up a copy of One Deck Dungeon: Forest of Shadows along with a playing mat for it at my FLGS’s biannual Swap Meet. I unloaded about 3 cubic feet of boxes, and got a small pile of store credit.
I actually already owned this game, but my copy came missing some of the tokens, and by the time I noticed, there was no stock of them left with Asmadee, so I’ve been using stand-ins. I now have both “chapters” of the game, complete with all tokens and nice plastic cards and a playmat, and they only take up as much space as a Tiny Epic.
In continuing observance of Kickstarter Fulfillment Season (it’s a beautiful 70F (21.1111C) sunny day here), the next arrival to discuss is a big one!
- Pax Renaissance 2nd Edition
- Pax Viking
- High Frontier 4 All w/ Terawatt & Futures, Colonization, and Conflict modules
So, I had originally just pledged for PaxRen2 and PV. And even that was done cautiously, carefully considering my options regarding a particular designer (Phil Eklund, whose merits and demerits are well-documented in other places and don’t need to be discussed on these forums)
And then I tuned into a Heavy Cardboard playthrough of Leaving Earth. And I made note of the designer of Leaving Earth commenting “in my biased opinion, High Frontier shines with freewheeling journeys across the solar system, Leaving Earth is more of a nail-biter for tense mission moments.”. Well, I do need some freewheeling shenanigans in my life and “hard science” space exploration games are few and far between in this hobby of ours. I then watched the Heavy Cardboard playthrough of High Frontier 4 All (base game only) and was very interested, so I went in to my pledge manager for PaxRen2/PV and added on the HF4A All-in package.
And then I started watching the Heavy Cardboard playthrough of HF4A w/modules 0, 1, 2… that clocked in at over 13 hours (including a 2 hour The Teach). And I started thinking to myself, “Self, what have you done!?” Well, fair enough. Certainly not a game for everyone. And maybe it won’t stick around. But I get excited when I read the back of these boxes… so perhaps I’m just indulging my sci-fi loving inner-child.
I kickstarted, waited for years for, and eventually owned HF3, but for several years I didn’t find myself actually wanting to play it enough to get the box down and do it. I eventually sold it. I hope you have fun with HF4!
Add another to the purchased ticker!
Cool, just let me know when I can come over.
Roger can attest to how bad I am at learning these maths machines.
Nah, all the money was committed prior to 2021, so it doesn’t count
My partner and I are half-vaccinated. So, about mid-May or so!
As far as when we could set aside a day and a half for High Frontier 4 All with all the modules? Well, my children may eventually move out of the house. Given that they are both under 5 at the moment, I won’t be holding my breath just yet.
They can fend for themselves at like 7 or 8. You’ll be fine.
My kids can fend for themselves at ages 7 and 9, for some definition of “fend”. Find food: check. Use bathroom: floor works, right? House demolished after an hour unsupervised: Untested, but likely “check”.
Almost there then for me!
To be fair after both started settling at night and sleeping through I felt a lot of things became easier.
