I bought the regular copy of Fantasy Realms rather than deluxe, and apart from price, having a smaller box was a major consideration.
Terraforming Mars Dice is not full of air exactly…
… more unrecyclable open-cell foam blocks. I reckon I could get it down to a third or at most half that height.
But the next step may well be to design an inlay. Or decide I’m going to keep the box for possible expansions.
I am assuming expansions are incoming…
I am using the foam blocks as card dividers I haven’t yet mixed in the promo and corporate era cards.
Although there are boards for tokens and a big board in the larger one these still feel egregious.
Even the token board is spaced out
(Temporum and its expansion)
Can I unlike posts? That is upsetting.
Ah actually at that point I hadn’t put the board back into the box. At least that space is used well
Oh.
Wow, I think that may even be worse than Splendor.
Future accessory: deluxe garden gnome upgrades. When that comes around, you’ll be happy the box is so big!
Robin of Locksley is another poor showing.
10 punchboards and 4 meeples and it’s not even close to filling the box. Then things get even worse when you’ve punched it all out.
This one will qualify as “other tragedies”
So yesterday I went by FLGS and had a long chat with the owner. He’s not always there and but when he is he seems happy to see me. I told him to be sure to order Nekojima with his next order from Huch and he says “Funny you should say that I was just working on that order and I thought it might be a good one to set up in the store, good to know it’s also a good game!” We then talked about good and bad publishers and I quote: “At least Queen games doesn’t make good games anymore.”
In any case I took home a game I’d been eyeing since SPIEL and waiting for more voices to talk about and nobody did so now I will probably soonish.
But first comes the unboxing. This has to be the most emotionally rollercoastery unboxing in a while.
Excitement on the way home.
Opening up the box taking out everything I could immediately see how this relates to Brass Birmingham which famously has no insert. There was no insert. Except… wait what’s this? Some white cardboard stuff to be assembled? But where are the instructions? There’s a QR code that leads to the page for the game. No instructions. Googling those I quickly found a thread on BGG that’s funny in its own right.
But eventually I figured out how to put the pieces together and get them into the box without everything falling apart again. Behold the completed “thing”
Not so bad after all, I can configure the compartments to my needs. I begin putting in the components.
Looking decently organized now. Except the way the cardboard is assembled there are little pieces that get in the way. But who cares… I’ve done it.
Here’s everything that goes inside: board, player boards, player components and rules. I am glad I am done because this has taken more time than I wanted… So next I squish the player components on top of the insert… then the boards and the nice dual layered player boards and the weird component on top (I am sure I’ll talk about the weird component later when I have played this. Just remember it exists)
So here is the box with all the components “inside”. I am done now, right?
Yeah , well, I am sure you can spot the mistake. (Btw that’s the weird component on top)
So here’s the solution:
At least there were enough baggies in the box as well. And there is no air at all either way. The “insert” is going straight to the bin.
At least…they tried.
Eh, what’s a little lid lift?
Today on boxes full of air… Heat: Pedal to the Metal
At least they deserve credit for wrapping the cards in paper and not plastic.
To be a bit fair to them, they planned the storage for expansion content.
That explains the 8 slots for only 6 cars and gear sticks… still, that insert is so bulky, when everything bagged would surely need a box just a third of its depth.
PS: Which likely would allow a lot more space for more circuits?
Possibly. I appreciate the many slots for cards to keep things separate easily without needing to bag each deck.
I second this. There is way more stuff in the smaller Rallyman GT Box. And with the expansion map I believe there is box lift now. I could go check but I remember being annoyed when the expansion arrived.
One day I’ll combine my two boxes of NMBR 9 into one. I could just snip round the inserts and stack them, but I’d rather make something designed for eight players’ worth of bits.
My friends did that. Works pretty well.
