Boxes full of air and other tragedies

Have to say that looks lovely.

Good to see a standard reference Oink game in action

I’m pretty sure I saw that at UK games expo and thought it was a giant convention version.

Spoiler: it’s actually the travel version.

As was said about Ogre Designer’s Edition: just add tracks…

I picked up a copy of No Thanks for a friend’s upcoming birthday, as he’s always looking for good travel/pub games, and I was confronted with this nonsense:

Even with the extra-large cards, it’s more than twice the size it needs to be. There’s a void below where the deck sits that can fit the tokens with room to spare!

It’s even worse, because it used to come in a box that was 1/4 the size (yellow/orange, small, bigger tokens ironically). They intentionally put it in a stupid bigger box just so it would demand more shelf space.

Super annoying.

Yeah, the orange box was totally fine. I would have bought that one. A friend owned it and I went to get myself a copy years ago but, to my horror, like @bruitist, I encountered The Blue Monstrosity.

I couldn’t bring myself to endorse that edition with cash, so I looked around… and learned about the European editions with the lovely cartoon artwork, and got myself one of those instead.

I specifically sought out the Mayfair Blue box because it’s correctly sized.

This is the problem with buying online :pensive:

If everyone bought online, publishers wouldn’t care how much space a box took up on a shelf!

They’d have a good reason to make the game more compact, indeed.

There are still small boxes for No Thanks… you just need to live with the German title

PS: blame my phone for not being smart enough to automatically turn this right side up. so much for smart phones and ai.

Wait, does the German title translate as “Nice Shit”?

Yes, yes it does. “Schöne Scheisse” is an exclamation you might shout out during the game. Very similar to “Ach du grüne Neune” (“oh you green niner”) better known as “oh fuck” in English. But we like alliterations and euphemisms

Nice to know that A* in GCSE German I got 22 years ago hasn’t fully faded away. I still understand the important words.

Cornishlee and I interviewed a couple of game publishers on More Games Than Time, and I at least was very surprised how insistent they were that shelf presence (and particularly being up on the shelves with the big games rather than down on the table with the CCG boosters and mini-expansions) was still a thing even now.

We have a name for the stuff on the lowest shelf “Bückware” (bücken = to stoop, ware = wares/product)

Clans of Caledonia is in a stream lined box to save on shipping costs for kickstarter fulfilment I believe. Stayed that way as it was already done when it got popular enough for retail

My FLGS has a display section with hanging, small-box products. Nobody ever, ever, ever looks at it. Especially since they also intermingle various hanging, small-box-or-packet expansions.

They do, however, maintain a couple of shelves for Oink-sized games or slightly-bigger-than. Now that Oink games have hit mainstream distribution here in North America, they grab a lot of attention (with their bright colors and whimsical artwork) which I think is doing the other games on the shelves a favor.
