Anticipated games

Oh. I was about to post that I thought the first image was part of the redesign, and that I quite liked it…

It was a more of a comment that every time a game gets redesigned someone will commit a 10,000 word (exagerration) post on why it’s awful and the old one was better

Seems we get that every time a graphical redesign is made, not so much for more significant overhauls.

Aesthetic changes tend to incite hot opinions in general. There’s an identity component to the choices people make when buying into anything with a style or attitude, etc. It doesn’t make things any less ridiculous when folks pull tantrums about changes to “their” [thing], but at least the emotional element is kind of understandable.

With that said, I think there are objective criteria for products/works (like games) to strive for, and in the case of the original art direction, I’m comfortable calling it bad/wrong. You show me a gallery that displays their works on walls with day-glo paisley patterns, and I’ll rethink my opinion.

I’ve seen much, much worse than that in well-regarded art galleries!

Personally, while I can’t say the old design is immediately pretty, it’s eye-catching and unusual in ways that the redesign very much isn’t. The redesigned card art is nice, but everything else about the graphic design seems so dull and sterile by comparison. In fact, the more I look at the two, the more I like the original. No accounting for taste : )

“Beige” from player A means “blah, drab, dull, boring”.

“Beige” from player B says “neutral background to get out of the way so that the game elements are clearer”.

Anyone played or planning to get Anno 1800? Not an insta-buy but keen on trying it if someone in my club brings it

I’m hoping to score a copy by way of my wishlist. It’s not something I’ll go out of my way to buy, at least while it’s still an unknown.

Seemed interesting and Martin Wallace made it perk my ears but got a couple of other heavy euros to get through first.

I only hear good things from reviewers and yet… for some reason this doesn’t speak to me. I suspect it is because the computer game failed to impress me all that much. Maybe because from a mechanics view the tech tree itch has Beyond the Sun to play with right now.

I’ll more than likely pick it up. Everything except the IP and art sounds my thing.

So one of the new editions of Ra has had some pics put online.

I’m not sure if this is an upgrade from my French one (same as FFG) http://dicetreegames.com/home/product_ra.html

Wood and metal?!?! Yes.

The tiles still look terrible.

I’d like to see 25th Century Games’ take on this before getting Die Tree’s edition

Imperium Classics and Legends… I seem to have missed this new deckbuilder from David Turzci from Osprey games before I saw it was already sold out some places… I saw a written review on BGG and it sounds interesting. Does anyone know more?

David Turzci talks about it on the episode of Ludology he guests on I think. Might give you some more insights as he talks about the design philosophy of it

There has been a selection of designer diaries and notes on each faction on the Osprey blog over the last few months.
