18XX - where to start?

Great! Any recommendations for a three player game? Apart from 1889 and Chessie, I’d be keen to give 1830 or 1882 a go.

Never played any of those at 3 players. :frowning:

You’ve played 1882 3 player.

I’m good with either 1830 or 1882. I fear '82 may lead to a purchase (but that would be a good thing!)

18xx.games has so many more options now, it’s crazy. Others that probably would be good at 3:

  • 1846
  • 1860
  • 1861
  • 18MS

Let’s go with 1882 then. I assume @lalunaverde would remember if he’d had a horrible time with it. I’ll set it up later this evening.

Hello All! After a long time away (the reasons for which are probably more suited to the ‘How are you today?’ thread) you’ve lured me back with the mention of 18XX! Almost like someone throwing stones off the end of an abandoned pavilion… Anyway, if you’ve started the game already then that’s fine, but funnily enough I’ve been looked at 18XX.com recently and remembering with some fondness the couple of asynchronous game we’ve played. So if there’s a space I would love to take part.

I think we could spin up a second game, if that’s cool with everyone. Or we aren’t very far into this one, I wouldn’t mind starting over.

Agree. Happy to start again

Definitely! I think I’d prefer a restart to a second game if that’s fine with everyone.

I hope that this doesn’t overstep the mark (I’ve looked on BGG and I don’t think it does) but I wanted to say that I would consider selling one of my non-perminent trains to another player in the right emergency circumstances, and for the right price…

Anyone played 1848 Australia? Or have a suggestion for an 18XX-as-a-euro?

I think the Russian Canada in a box qualifies?

Age of Steam…?

Yeah, didn’t find that interesting

Traditionally 1846 is considered closest to a euro. I’m not familiar enough to vouch personally on that but it’s a comment I’ve seen often.

I like 1861 Russia personally. Only played 2.5 times but as a more light hearted 18xx I think it has plenty good about it. Accessible auctions, big board with interesting route building and the Russian state railway has some interesting timings associated with it

18DO has some euro mixed into the 18xx formula, but I haven’t tried it yet.

There’s an older game Poseidon that is kinda euroy, but it didn’t get talked about much… I have a copy but so far unplayed.

1862 has a lot of the sharp edges of 18xx filed off which may make it euroy in some ways.

This was my introduction. I had fun first time but it got stale quick and then promptly relegated by 18Lilliput. I’d probably just jump to 18Lilliput as it’s a more interesting blend of 18xx and euro than Poseidon. Plus it’s in print and it’s got a good small box. I’d still play it now but wouldn’t touch Poseidon again.

Thanks all for the game of 1882. It seemed quite claustrophobic compared to the others I’ve played. I also thought that some of the Privates were interesting.
