Which games AREN'T you playing?

I’m in Cardiff. We could meet halfway? Swindon seems apt for a train game

Arrived during pandemic

  • Summoner Wars - I was late to the party on this one… I have a couple of candidates that I think will enjoy “card-based chess with super powers”
  • BattleCON - Picked up a couple of BattleCON products at deep discounts but it, like Summoner Wars above, are not my partner’s cup of tea (or even her style of game!). I’m looking to the same audience for this as well
  • Aeon’s End - A recent thread here brought this back into my attention and I picked it up. I do think my partner will enjoy a co-op deckbuilder, so I’m going to try to get it played solo soon to learn it before getting her involved.
  • Roads & Boats - my first copy of R&B arrived just before isolation began. I think it’ll be a great game night game with my neighbor who loves logistics puzzles

18xx

  • 1862, 18CZ, 1830, 1844, 1854, 18Chesapeake - I have no excuse for buying more when all of these are unplayed. The only 18xx I’ve actually played was an online game of 1889.

I’m afraid of the The Teach™

  • Root - I think my partner would actually like this one… but I think her eyes will glaze over when I start explaining the rules
  • Arkwright - Why did I think this was a game I needed? My goodness is it opaque (and I thought it would be easier to grok than 18xx)

That makes sense. My wife’s not really into most 2p games, so I feel you there.

Sure, that’d be fun. Let’s just see how long Covid makes that unfeasible for :sleeping::sleeping:

I’d really love to play some Ashes. But my problems getting it to the table didn’t start with the pandemic; I just tend not to play a lot of two-player games (at the usual boardgame group meetings where we might have 5-7 people it feels antisocial) and while you can play it with more it doesn’t really add anything.

So many people have Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective in their top 10, I’m going to have to get it.

I was in the same boat.

I did get to play 2-player kinda regularly, but only with my friend who’s dyslexic, so a text-heavy game like Ashes isn’t ideal.

I forgot about Nippon. Got it in the maths trade. Quite interested to try this one. Maybe not as excited as 18xx, but that’s true of most games now :grimacing:

I grabbed all 3 boxes in various sales, but haven’t played any of them yet, as if they do turn out to be something my partner likes, I wanna make sure I’ve got plenty of cases to work through.

One thing that arrived as we went into lockdown was Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy. Really looking forward to getting it to table at some stage in the future.

I’d played the original at a convention a few years ago and really enjoyed it, so did a late pledge for the KS reprint which saw quite a few delays. So it is currently sitting on the shelf waiting for eventual game group time.

I was disappointed in the short list of unplayed games. Until I expanded the details, at which point I thought, “That’s the pillbox we all know and love!”

Got High Society, Tournament at Camelot, Startups and Inhuman Conditions all came during or prior to lockdown. I was about to try digging up some Arkham Horror: The Living Cardgame, as well. The latter is hard to locate (for a newcomer at least) online in my experience and I was about to go on a quest to various game stores in Seattle before all this.

There are a number of games I was particularly looking forward to playing with specific people–some I’ve played before with different groups, some I haven’t played yet, and some I’ve played before with the same groups they were just in my Next To Play list anyway:

  • Root --Really wanted to introduce my sister and brother to this.
  • Vast: The Mysterious Manor – Loved Crystal Caverns immensely. Wanted to give this a go.
  • Marvel Champions – I like it, but I’m not wowed by it, so I wanted to play it with some people I think will would really love it and maybe just leave it with them.
  • Flamme Rogue – Wanted to introduce the whole family to this one.
  • Catacombs – This went over really well with one group so I’m eager to play more of it.
  • Keyforged – I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I like this game. I have a couple of decks I’ve played and two I haven’t cracked open yet and I’ve been sharing it with as many people as I can.
  • Quacks of Quedlinberg – This is the next game in my unplayed pile that I really wanted to get to.

There are quite a few games I’m always down to play or always actively seeking to play, too, but that’s really just a list of my Favorite Games (right now) so it’s kinda a different thing.

Ah, a Shelf of Shame thread.

So, post pandemic, I am not doing all that bad with my new acquisitions.

Games purchased since lockdown

Unmatched Vol.1
Horrified
Villainous: Evil Comes Prepared
Mysterium: Hidden Signs
Everdell
Orleans
Chinatown

Games played

Unmatched
Horrified
Everdell (solo)

Considering how crazy everything is with our kids all cooped up, who make it very difficult to play games while they are awake, I am calling this a win.

If we look at the rest of my collection, well…

Unplayed (going by memory)

Hokkaido
Shadows Over Camelot: the card game
Escapse from the Aliens in Outer Space
Saboteur
Deep Sea Adventure
Citadels
Star Wars: Empire vs Rebellion
They Who Were 8
Catacombs and Castles
Condottiere
Evolution: the Beginning
Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: Jack the Ripper and West End Adventures
Dragoon
Decrypto
Codenames: Marvel
Crosstalk
Ghost Stories: White Moon expansion

Pandemic: In the Lab expansion
Looney Quest
Shadows: Amsterdam
Survive Space Attack!
Masque of the Red Death
Exit: the Secret Lab

Then there is my pile of games I have owned for a while with just a play or two that really deserve more love.

Twilight Imperium 4th ed
Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective
Fury of Dracula 3rd ed
Batman: Gotham City Chronicles
Magic Maze
The Big Book of Madness
The Castles of Mad King Ludwig

Such a shame I am not living in Chippenham any more… bang in the middle, and we could have played in my house…

I still haven’t been able to break out Napoleon’s Triumph for a full game in all its 44" x 34" glory since the designer gave me* a copy last year.

Still, I have been able to play it a few times, and I definitely wouldn’t have been motivated to make a Vassal module to do so if I didn’t own a physical copy, but still… I want to push blocks around and pretend like I’m Napoleon in real-time.

(* gave multiple copies to a guy in California who sent them around the world for just the exorbitant cost of USPS postage)

We’re not stopping you! Please have your partner take pictures.

But… I suppose it wouldn’t be as fun if you weren’t playing the game.

I was mainly thinking of the unplayed FCM+ketchup sitting sadly on my shelf, but you raise an excellent point :slightly_smiling_face:

Oh yeah! I bought High Society and haven’t been able to play it yet.

It’s sitting next to the original Lost Cities which is also high on my list once other players become possible.
