Where on Earth are you!? Show us the sights from your part of the world

Tornado Splash looks fun

We stopped off at the National Botanic Garden in Wales today on our way to St. David’s. The walled garden looks especially good at the moment.

The glasshouse was used as the set for a very creepy episode of Dr Who

Where I was this weekend: camping at a farm near Shrewsbury for Shrewkfest, a ukulele festival.

Very mixed camping, though some of the motorhomes had trouble getting round the corners to the campsite.

A gently sloping field, with hills on both sides. (And sheep. Who do not shut up all night.)

The Rochdale Canal has been gradually emptied.

The Canals & Rivers Trust are blaming “thieves” rather than leaks.

I was just perusing some photos from our last trip to Europe. This is Dinant in Belgium, which is lovely. The citadel on the cliff top has a lot of interesting history, and the people who look after it have put together a very impressive audio-visual experience if you go through it – definitely more than we were anticipating. The cathedral below is grand, and the whole area is extremely picturesque. We really enjoyed our visit!

I walked along the River Thames from Isleworth to Kingston. Technically, I started walking from home towards the river, but yes. It took me around 2.5 hours when I started the journey at the London Appentice pub in Isleworth and ended when I diverted away from the riverside in Kingston.

Fun detours were had which added into the time

WARNING: I will be photo dumping

ISLEWORTH

RICHMOND

HAM - the horses are from the Ham Polo Club and there’s a match that was about to start when I walked around. I didn’t took a photo of the Ham House - a manor house - because I think it looks shit and I have to pay to get in.

TWICKENHAM - so much foliage/foresty that you dont often see the river

TEDDINGTON - just after the Teddington Lock

KINGSTON - ended my journey when I walked away from the river and towards the town centre. Explored downtown a bit. @EnterTheWyvern invited me to drop by and have a chat, which was very lovely!

Okay, I have a kinda stupid question (set your expectations low for this one).

Why does England still have a “Royal” navy? You’re not a monarchy any more, are you? I mean, you still have a monarch, but you’re a… whatsit… parliamentary constitutional monarchy? Like, it’s not a kingdom… right?

Oh. Wait. You are still a Kingdom. United, one might say. So despite the fact that you have a parliament and a Prime Minister that runs things, you still have the King as the “actual” head of your government (no stones, I think he’s technically still the head of my government as well, which is all sorts of idiotic), which means the navy isn’t the government’s, but his?

But is the navy the arm of the parliament (and therefore not “Royal”), or the arm of the King (and therefore “Royal”), or is it just an artifact of a time when the government and the king was the same thing, and nobody wanted to pay to change the name?

Also, I don’t recognize that flag. I thought England, but that’s just white and red, yeah?
