Topic of the Week: Five by Three

Three lists of five-ish elements:

  1. What are the top five games on your wishlist? Waiting on shelf space, budget, or a reprint? (and how often does this list change, apart from a purchase)?

  2. What are the top five (unplayed) games you want to get played?

  3. What are the top five games you really want to get back to the table? Or game modes / expansions for a game you’ve played which you’d like to experience? What’s keeping that from happening?

Wishlist

  • Dogs of War - reprint confirmed! And with better price tag and box size I hope
  • Magical Athelete - Cosmic Encounter but as a roll-and-move racing game. Euro gamers look away
  • The Old King’s Crown - still a blind back from me so I am going into this with zero information. The last time I did this was with Guards of Atlantis
  • Cyclades: Legendary Edition - Cyclades with new rules. Keen to see the new rules in action
  • Nature - this is the re-implementation of Evolution and its expansions. After reading the rules, I now feel that the game is for the better. The rules changed derided as softening up the game, I think it’s okay.

Shame Pile

  • Kaivai - one of the co-designers was from Terra Mystica. And the game has shared incentives. So yeah
  • West Riding Revisited - the last Cube Rail in my shame pile. They have been bangers so far.
  • Compile
  • Ortus Regni - a card tableau game with only illustrations and no text. Wild. Heard it from SVWAG
  • Mistborn Deckbuilding Game - because it’s Mistborn.

Hot Replays
Preface: I’ve culled my collection a lot and most of my collection are “want to play”. But these the hottest:

  • Cosmic Encounter - it’s been a while. Style remains the same: 2 aliens + rewards deck + blind bidding on alliance phase + Hazard deck. Reason: it keeps getting elbowed by other games. Maybe a sign…
  • Pax Transhumanity - lagged behind Pax Ren. I want to explore this deeply like what I did with Pax Ren. Pax H+ got a massive entry-barrier due to the rules
  • Feudum - mainly so I can decide if I want to keep this or not. Leaning towards “not keeping”. Same problem: entry-barrier. Very complicated.
  • Impulse - a Chudyk game that I want more replays. Overshadowed by the other Chudyks
  • Aegean Sea - same as Impulse, but I only had a couple of plays

I’ve only got 4 on my wishlist and I use this for consideration. So it changes every month or so when I review it

  1. Race for the Galaxy: Xeno Counterstrike It’s RftG, it’s maximalliam RftG. It’s going to be good
  2. 18MEX The most fun 18XX, I’ve played but do I need to own an 18XX
  3. Railways of the Lost Atlas see above, but an 18XX that leans more Euro. Getting the expansion Kickstarter treatment this year
  4. Microverse GMT P500, so details are scant for now
  5. Manekinecollection (secret 5th one). It’s Knizia, it looks cute!
  • HUANG, bought it as it was available and it’s Dr. Knizia
  • Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio I heard you like auctions, so I made a game that’s all auctions
  • Power Grid: Fable Friese does a campaign

I’ve played everything I own, apart from map expansions

  • All the Power Grid maps, time
  • MarraCash, honestly I’m waiting on the rumoured Playte edition that will be nicer presentation
  • Quantum, cool game but needs the right group
  • Cube Rails, but specifically the Iron Rails series
  • Modern Art, I own two versions and can’t play either!

Top five games on your wishlist

My top 5 stayed the same for ages until very recently, when I bought Crokinole and Fortune and Glory which had been my top 2. Now it’s:

Heat: Pedal to the metal
Ready, Steady, Bet
Sea Salt and Paper
Lord of the Rings Duel
Beyond the Horizon
(And Ra. And Pax Pamir 2nd)

Top five (unplayed) games you want to get played

Inis!
Sherlock Holmes consulting detective
Forgotten Waters
Viticulture Tuscany EE
Loads and loads of Marvel Champions

Top five games you really want to get back to the table

70s Dune - you need a very particular group of players for that one
Vampire the Masquerade: Heritage - same, and they have to commit to a legacy game
LotR: Journeys in Middle Earth - I could solo this one but it’s a lot of work for a shallow game
Azul: Summer Pavilion
Forests of Pangaia

Dogs of War is on my list, too. Last I checked it was still in the aether. Looking forward to it!

Cyclades 2e went through a few iterations for me: First, Cyclades is already perfect and these changes sound awful. Then (reads developer’s diary) OOOhhhhh, I get it. That all makes sense and sounds pretty good actually. (reads campaign) this pricing and support levels are awful and Cyclades is already perfect…

We’ll see what happens at retail. It’s still on my radar.

I don’t know if I have 5 on my wishlist.
Deus would be on there, although I’ve completely forgotten what to do
Roll for the Galaxy is more that I want to play it irl than definitely own it
Dogs of War reprint is on my radar

Unplayed
Great Western Trail: New Zealand should get a first outing at Aire Con at the weekend.
I probably have more unplayed stuff, but I can’t think what!
I’ve got Jagged Earth and Branch and Claw to delve in to
And the second hand copy of Cyclades I picked up

To play
Spirit Island

I think my wishlist is only 1 item and that’s crokinole. After playing @RogerBW 's copy and finding out you can do team games I’m all excited for it. When I have time and the space to store it…

I only own 2 unplayed games. 1856 and Mage Knight. So that’s that list. Mage Knight I got to play mainly as 2 player with my heavy coop friend but they’ve fallen very ill so maybe in a few years when the kids sleeps well. 1856 hopefully this year.

Ones I want to get back to the table is now very tricky, as I get so much less game time only choosing 5 is tough. Food Chain is up there, that’s definitely been too long and now @lalunaverde is practiced I’d be very up for learning some higher level play. Trains always a treat. A non random market deck builder where the board play matters. Always a treat to play. 18Mex. It would be good to get back to this one. The group’s familiarity and the quality of the game has made it some of my best 18xx experiences so getting another run out would be stellar. Cthulhu Wars has become a victim of my change in circumstance so it’s been months. Might be my current favourite. I am very tired so my 5th might have to wait until tomorrow.

I don’t hve much wishlist and I buy relatively few games now. Waiting for the very delayed second Sentinels expansion, but I don’t think there’s any game that I’d buy on the spot. Quite a few expansions though: Coldwater Crown The Sea, A Touch of Evil Something Wicked, etc.

I have five unplayed games sp that’s easy:

  • Assembly
  • Make It Happen (demonstrator freebie)
  • Path of Light and Shadow
  • Riverside (demonstrator freebie)
  • Umbra Via

I have a large collection and with almost every time I play a game I haven’t played for a while I think “I should really get that out more often”. Recent examples include Tobago, MNBR 9, The Networks. I probably have too many games for the amount of playing I get to do.

What are the top five games on your wishlist? Waiting on shelf space, budget, or a reprint? (and how often does this list change, apart from a purchase)?

  1. Antiquity

Then nothing for quite a while.

  1. Trekking the World 2nd Edition (KS is just delivering, I didn’t back it. Never played OG but recently got yet another recommendation for it. It looks pretty.)
  2. Wine Cellar for thematic reasons–backing a single game from a multi-game KS was too expensive.
  3. Mandalorian Adventures Expansion “A Clan of Two”
  4. Lord of the Rings Trick Taking Game (I hear it’s LotR Crew)

What are the top five (unplayed) games you want to get played?

  • Dune Imperium Uprising (solo would be fine)
  • Zoo Vadis
  • Firefly Coffin Edition (preferably multiplayer, I know which players they are difficult to get into the same room due to one of them living quite a few driving hours away)
  • Cyclades Legendary Edition
  • GWT: Sheep Edition (preferably multiplayer)

It’s difficult to choose. I have so many. I am trying to go for the most realistic options that I could conceivably know the rules well enough to teach or in 3 cases even solo. Or else Dune and Sidereal C. would top the list.

What are the top five games you really want to get back to the table? Or game modes / expansions for a gam

  • Robo Rally specifically the new anniversary edition I just got. I know which players are enthusiastic about this game. I just need to find the time. Also we started playing RPGs with that set again… so that’s competing
  • Spirit Island with 2. I just need to find a Wednesday or Thursday where both my friend and I don’t have a cold or a meeting.
  • Clank! Legacy V2 our campaign: it’s been sleeping since January due to too much stress
  • Ark Nova with 2 or 4: it would mean we have finally found time to play with that particular family (also I have been planning a duel with her for 2 years now and we haven’t found ourselves alone together)
  • Revive Solo: I just started playing a duel against my standard BGA Mitspieler which reminds me I put this on my 25x1 solo challenge for big games and also how much fun it is to puzzle this one out.

Overall this thread reminds me that my year in games has started of nicely and then came to an abrupt halt for various nebulous reasons…

All right, let’s see… Keep in mind these are in no particular order.

Wish list:

SETI (waiting for the French version to be available, but would also like to whittle down the Pile of Opportunity first)
Black Forest (would like to whittle down the Pile of Opportunity first)
Moon (need more research and a French version, looked neat though)
Anno 1800 (need more research and ideally a French version, looked neat though)
Nucleum (would like to whittle down the Pile of Opportunity first)

Unplayed:

Kutna Hora (next on the list)
Spirit Island (been wanting to play this for years)
Cryo (got it for a miserly sum, seemed neat, curious about it)
Yellow & Yangtze (got it for a miserly sum, heard really good things, curious about it)
Altiplano (got it for a miserly sum, seemed neat and heard good things, curious about it)

Get back:

6 Nimmt (had purchased it to play with Maryse’s parents, now with her mum gone, it’s about finding other people)
Bitoku (we both want to try it again, it’s about finding time since it’d essentially be learning a new game and we have… well, a few others)
Beyond the Sun (we both want to try it again, it’s about finding time since it’d essentially be learning a new game and we have… well, a few others)
Suburbia (played it once last year, we both loved it, and then it just… never came up. We want to play again)
Wingspan (played it a few times, didn’t LOVE it, but everybody else seems to, so we want to give it another go)

I just emptied my wishlist a bit recently. And, mostly, it only has additional content for games I already own: Bullet, Cthulhu: Death May Die, Legendary, Unmatched, etc…

The first 5 that aren’t extensions of existing products, in no particular order:

  1. Distilled – heard really good things about this, especially as a solo game. Haven’t looked too much into it yet, though
  2. Excavation Earth – similar story as above. For this one, though, I’ve been dragging my feet bubbling it up my actual wishlist because I think I might be able to find a good bundle of the game+expansions on the secondary market fairly easily and it seems unnecessary to buy a new, retail copy that wouldn’t have all that content.
  3. Imperium: Foo – similar to Excavation Earth, I’ve seen bundles of 2 or 3 of these games combined for the price of a single new one. I am interested to learn more about this one; it looks like it has good solo replayability
  4. 1880: China – this is pretty far down on my list; a non-soloable 18xx game, but I’ve seen lots of great things said about this one.
  5. The Bloody Inn – this has been out of print for so long. I’m not sure if it’s ever coming back :frowning: . I’m still hopeful I can get a copy some day.

Things I skipped over to get a full list of 5, because these are more-of-the-same:
  • Bullet⭐
  • Cthulhu: Death May Die Season 2
  • Cthulhu: Death May Die Season 4
  • Cthulhu: Death May Die Yog Sothoth
  • Legendary: No Time to Die
  • Flash Point Fire Rescue: Tragic Events
  • Unmatched Battle of Legends Volume 2
  • Great Battles of Julius Caesar Deluxe Edition
  • Jump Drive: Terminal Velocity
  • Bureau of Investigation: Investigations in Arkham & Elsewhere
  • Spirit Island: Premium Token Pack 1
  • Spirit Island: Premium Token Pack 2
  • Clinic Deluxe Extension 4
  • Clinic Deluxe Extension 5
  • Command & Colors Ancients
  • Ashes Reborn: The Queen of Lightning
  • Ashes Reborn: The Artist of Dreams
  • Ashes Reborn: Breaker of Fate
  • Ashes Reborn: Gorrenrock Survivors
  • Ashes Reborn: The Messenger of Peace
  • Ashes Reborn: The Oceans Guard
  • Quirky Circuits: Penny and Gizmo’s Snow Day
  • Raiders of the Deep U-Boats of the Great War
  • Solacia - The Wizard of Doom: A Solitaire Fantasy Game (Mike Lambo)

As you can see, I’ve been prioritizing getting additional content for the games I already own and (generally) know that I like.

So many games could be on this list. But, the cream of the crop, in no particular order:

  • 18OE: On the Rails of the Orient Express
  • Chinatown
  • Sidereal Confluence
  • Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy
  • The Great Zimbabwe

Also so many options. Here’s a few that I have stashed near my table because they are high on my list:

  • 1862: Railway Mania in the Eastern Counties
  • Spirit Island
  • Ashes Reborn – Red Rains
  • Millennium Blades
  • Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

(other than 1862, I’ve received new content for all of these recently… not sure if that’s a coincidence or a sign)

It’s in beta on BGA now.
My colleague told me there were some rights issues that have recently been resolved. I didn’t research the claim as I sold my copy ages ago with only minor regrets.

As for Distilled… yes yes it’s nice. But it doesn’t pass the “Reverse Kondo” test (I have it still but wouldn’t rebuy it.) The solo is fine. A bit of a push-your-luck puzzle if you are really into the theme. I think the premium token pack for Spirit Island is a better investment :stuck_out_tongue: Also the box is quite a bit taller than your standard square and possibly wider as well. It has a working plastic insert with okay logistics going for it.

Imperium: Foo on the other hand, I do recommend. Would very likely rebuy it if for some reason my collection was annihilated. Probably still in my Top 20 solo games list or somewhere close enough. But only solo. I don’t think I want to multiplayer this.

(re Imperium [foo])

I’d say that’s true. If I’m playing civ A against bot civ B, I’ll need to use different tactics from what I’d use for civ A vs bot civ C.

Hmm. The bot is good, but I do enjoy the game more multi player, even if it can sometimes take a while with more than two. For me it’s a social game as well as a mechanical one.

(Though I think @lalunaverde is more of your school of thought, or at least “no more than 2p”.)

I would definitely not play with more than 2. That’s almost a general rule for deck-buildery games for me. Turns can get long and complicated and I am too impatient to wait on more than 1 person to fumble through one. Too many of my friends suffer AP.

I agree that the bot acts in very specific ways and not having to manage it would be kind of nice. But … I have only limited access to two player game-time and it just doesn’t move beyond other games in any of those.

  • For my partner it’s just not the right game
  • My BGA Mitspieler is too far away–it would be a good fit
  • My other RL 2 player Mitspieler is already locked into playing Spirit Island, Revive and hopefully soon Innovation with me and since we have yet to find time for playing this year… I doubt Imperium will see 2 players.

And it’s simply too heavy now with 3 games in one box and wood insert to take anywhere outside my house.

The only exception I found is playing it at con with you guys. In a games night: no no no.

I have much fondness for this game. The art is fairly unique in boardgames from what I’ve seen. The theme is grimly funny. there’s a big strand of humour throughout and it’s a fun game. Doesn’t out stay it’s welcome and got just enough spice to be exciting even if that can be a little swingy. Good luck in your quest.

5 games on my wishlist:

  • Flamme Rouge: Grand Tour - FR is probably my favourite game
  • Brass Lancashire - Brass Birmingham is great, haven’t ever played the original
  • Moving Wild - I’ve played too much Sushi Go, this seems like a nice alternative
  • Bus - been taking a look at Splotter games recently, this one seems like the most accessible
  • Courtisans - seems fun?
My wishlist changes a lot, but those top 2 are pretty consistent. I tend to add and remove often and if something sticks around I’ll pick it up eventually.

5 unplayed games I’d like to play:

  • Sidereal Confluence - how does anyone get this to the table
  • King’s Dilemma - I did have a group in mind when I got it but don’t have any group now
  • Captain Sonar - this seems stressful. I like stressful games but I don’t know if I’ve got 7 friends that like stressful games
  • Wingspan Asia - usually I have a pretty good idea about a game before I try it, but I got this mostly as an expansion to Wingspan, I have no idea how this one was received
  • Turncoats - got this a while ago and tbh I think the reason I haven’t played it yet is just because it’s not in an obvious box, I just forget about it

5 games to get back on the table:

  • Flamme Rouge - once the expansion is out I’m keen to get back into this, I’ve held off since the expansion was announced
  • John Company - I have played about half a game of this. I hope I get to play a full one…
  • Brass Birmingham - haven’t played in a while and it’s really good
  • Bananagrams - has anyone seen the mini Banagrams? It seems totally impractical but someone gifted it to me and it is very cute
  • Zoo Vadis - I have only played this once and it feels like it could be one of my favourites. Just haven’t had the chance

@Acacia thanks for this topic, it was a good exercise for remembering what games I’ve got sat on the shelf

I’m trying not to buy more games at the moment but these would tempt me:

  • A second edition of An Infamous Traffic
  • The Estates (out of print)
  • Flamme Rouge: Grand Tour (waiting for UK release)
  • Bus (a friend has it, so I definitely shouldn’t buy it)
  • Byline (should be on Kickstarter this weekend. The designer is a friend but I also think it’s a really good game)

On my pile of shame/opportunity:

  • Undaunted 2200: Callisto
  • Hegemony
  • Lacrimosa (bumped up the list by @Simfers recent enthusiasm
  • Tichu (I blame @lalunaverde)
  • Akropolis + Athena

To get back to the table:

  • John Company 2E (before I forget the rules again!)
  • Petrichor
  • Sidereal Confluence
  • Hansa Teutonica
  • Food Chain Magnate
