The West Marches - Main Thread

Before you the forest ends, you are about ten meters from its periphery, the smell continues to grow in intensity.

Ash looks around and tries to gesture for “is anyone good at moving quietly”, then gives up and whispers it instead.

“Subtle Ash, subtle” replies Enfys. “I’ve snuck into some places over the years, although if anyone is near they’re probably distracted by that blaze”

Turning to Ssora, “what about you? You must have learnt a few things. Do you fancy having a look, or would you rather I go?”

Ssora salutes jovially, and heads forward with stealth engaged. She seems to have learned precisely nothing from the bold paladins, and possesses a snake-like quiet instead.

After a few minutes, Ssora returns - quiet as a ghost but much more cheery.

“Battle ahead! Little fort on a hill - it’s being raided, and looks like the attackers are already inside. Who they are, I couldn’t see - just shapes moving inside and lots of big gashes ripped out of the turf all around. The approach is open, like most forts - it might be pretty hard to go unnoticed if we tried to rush up there right now.”

She is obviously quite excited and intrigued.

“Is that what’s burning?”

“The surrounding palisade seems to be partly on fire, yes.”

“Could you see any more of what is going on? Any idea who is battling who? Shall we go and have a closer look”

“They’re inside already - hard to see. Unless we sit and watch for much longer.”
She makes a move to return to the fort, pausing to beckon her companions to follow.
“Might as well come look! There’s little danger at the moment.”

Ssora leads you to the forest edge.

Crouching under a fallen tree you have a narrow view of the fort, whilst inviting little chance of being discovered yourself.

The palisade is perhaps 10 metres square, with a small platform on either side of the gateway.

Nothing appears to be on fire, but some areas of the wooden structure are scorched black, whilst one corner is still smouldering.

The gate itself appears to have been reduced to little more than a woodpile, and the ground leading upwards is churned to mud. Around you are what appears to be the aftermath of weapon use. Some of the grass is burnt to cinder, other parts appear frozen solid.

The silence is deafening.

“Ssora, did you see anyone around earlier?” asks Enfys. “I’d like to take a closer look”

@Sagantine?

“Just dark figures inside.” Ssora shrugs.
“Don’t see any now…”
