@Sagantine asked for a die roll:
Ssora squints…
d20: 5 +0
(she has perception trained, but it barely makes up for her -2 WIS…)

An out of character question. Am I right to think rolling a pure 1 means automatic failure, no matter the modifier?

I mean technically, but that doesn’t mean what you perceive is true or false, just that you don’t know.

(The classic example being the phrase ‘you don’t find any traps.)

There are some (rare) examples of a 1 not being an auto-fail, such as when you are making a roll against something else’s roll, and they also roll a 1 and their modifier is worse than yours. The only true critical fail mechanic is for combat rolls, where a 1 auto-fails, even if your modifier is +infinity.

Thanks all

My perception is +7

@Sagantine, staring west your eyes are drawn to, maybe, the hint of movement above the far trees, whenever you think you spot it again, it vanishes frustratingly.

@RogerBW to the west, south west you notice a muddy area of ground, no bigger than a cart in width but there appears to be several tracks in the surface.

@Captbnut about 3 foot from where you stand there is a block of stone. Approximately the size of your head.

Ash: “I know nothing about reading tracks. Either of you?” (waving at the area of mud)

Enfys looks away from the block of stone; a shadow had been cast that made it resemble a pirate she remembered from years ago and the sight made her chuckle.

‘I’ve done a lot of hunting (and being hunted), but not on this type of ground. Let me have a look’

@ross, should I make a perception role? Does it have disadvantage?

@Captbnut, approaching the tracks you can see;

These trackers were made by boots.

The boots are smaller than your own feet.

There are several sets of tracks.

You can make another perception roll for more information.

10+7=17

Enfys looks at the tracks again…

You find the footsteps to be deep and well defined, implying the owners were either heavy or heavily laden, and moving at a slow, regular speed.

You count at least 8 individual sets and looking behind you, they appear to have been travelling away from the pond of plenty.

Enfys looks up at Ash and Ssora, ‘it looks like a big group have been this way. Either large or carrying a lot. They went that way’.

Enfys points in the direction that the prints are travelling

(West, South West.)

Ash: “Well, that might be a group feeding themselves from the pond. Worth a look?”

“So… Big people with small feet.”
She puts her foot over one of the tracks. How much smaller is the track?
“Do shapeshifters have small feet? Shall we follow them?”

“I’m happy to go and have a look”

You descend quickly and within an hour reach the forest again, finding a well defined path, ramrod straight.

It is well past lunch time and in the strangely empty forest you begin to feel a scratching at the back of your throats, and a sharpness in your eyes. Something nearby is burning…
