The resurrected miniatures painting and showing off thread

A couple of quick jobs. One 3d printed dude and a rush job on Sabotage.

Also realised I forgot frog dudes teeth. That’s the second time I’ve done that!

I’ve been slacking on my painting recently - I’m slowly working through assembling the Operation Kaldstrom models from Infinity and we’ve been doing other things at the weekend that have gotten in the way.

I’ve been thinking about painting handles and noticed that some people use champagne corks, which seem ideal, but we’ve only got wine corks in the house at the moment so I decided to try those out and make a stand for them:

I think it’s going to work well! I’ve finished gluing together the last Yu Jing model (the Jujak on the right) so this weekend I’ll be priming them and then the slow process of painting 7 models at once can begin!

If you fancy investing in a paint handle, there’s a kickstarter by Redgrassgames with 7 days to go:

They did the Monster Mash, it was a graveyard smash!

I finally got my Giant American Game Table (now kinda Quinns Approved!) back, now that this trainwreck of a school year has ended, but I’ve decided to stick with my small-footprint painting setup. What do other folk’s painting spaces look like?

I don’t have a dedicated area available for painting, so my set up is as simple as they come and is designed to pack away easily. The brown shoebox holds unpainted models, palettes when not in use, and basing materials. The grey really useful box has an insert in the top for brushes, tools and other odds and ends, whilst the paints are underneath.

I like trying to keep everything contained within those two boxes to retain a small footprint (although the painted models obviously have to go somewhere, so ultimately that footprint is ever increasing!)

I tend to grab the all paints I want for painting particular models and get them in some semblance of order for when I need them. Napoleonic British line infantry are my current WIP below.

I’ve set aside an area of my basement surrounded by tools and washing.

Closer view of main part of painting area. Old laptop for reference/inspiration pics or background YouTube/podcasts. Yes, those are chopped up Billy bookcases with extra MDF for paint shelves.

And a 90 degree left turn reveals this above the washing machine.

First model for Yu Jing as my next Infinity faction. Quite a lot of this I’m very happy with. Going to sleep on it and think about the improvements tomorrow morning. I think the orange that looks yellow might need a deeper shade to it for a start

It reads as orange to me
Nice work

I’ve taken the plunge and started the two big ones. Primed and ready but I’m not sure what colour schemes to go for.
1st a giant Space “elite soldier”. Really stuck for armour colours. (Approx 120mm plus sword)

Then this beast of a “mini” (whip separate).

Thought about red skin but could be clichéd. Not sure. Ideas?

My work area is tucked into a corner of my games room (usually a lot more space than shown, but we were in the middle of renovating our kitchen when the pandemic hit and so we have stacks of cabinets scattered around the house while we wait to be able to get a contractor in to do the work safely).

Airbrush to the left (which I haven’t used in about a year now, despite how much I love it… just don’t have the time), painting station to the right. It’s not large, but it serves my purposes for now… need to get a better chair, though, but that’s a minor thing for the future.

I have a couple of ideas, but first maybe some background on the mini. Is it just a display piece, or will it serve a specific function? Also, if you want to avoid cliched troupes, maybe look at it from a different sense of background, as in what story do you want to convey with this model? Is it based on a character which already exists? Or is it free for your imagination?

Display piece. No constraints really and no backstory, just something striking. I haven’t thought about story, but perhaps I should!

If you are wanting to go with something really different, a backstory could help in developing a colour scheme and be nice when people ask you questions like: ‘Why is the skin ‘this’ colour’.

But while you think about that, I am going to post some colour ideas I had. Sorry, there are a lot, but each I picked for different reasons. Naturally, these are just meant for ‘rough colour ideas’.

Based on your suggestions I put together a few palette options on the Adobe colour picker. Think there’s a winner in here somewhere. Will have to think.

Well all’s well so far as I haven’t had to use colours yet!
Decided on palette 3 I think.
Might use 4 for the space marine. I always love how they look after some white ink and feel I just make it worse for hours after this point until suddenly it’s better.

Went for palette 3, with colour 2 for skin and 5 for shadow. :open_mouth:
Scary to commit on such a big model.

Edit: further update!

It is PRETTY large…

Yeah, considering my painting “area” is typically a table or TV tray with newspaper strewn over it to protect the surface, and an old ice cream bucket full of paints and such, I think @Marx’s setup counts as “large”.

Fair enough. I suppose what I meant to say is that it feels cramped… there are huge boxes directly behind me which means I don’t really have much room.

But the desk is nice, and the card table to hold my airbrush is nice, and the airbrush filter-vacuum-thingy is nice. I like my work area, and while it needs a more comfortable chair, I have few complaints about it.
