Amazing work!
Lots more still to do on this little bugger, but I got a short window of time to paint yesterday! I got 4 other Nobz all set with their skin based (future me note: skin last next time), and started working on this Boy for future reference.
I love the pose; he seems to be pontificating over the grenade in a very Shakespearean way.
To throw, or not to throw: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The bombs and plasma of outrageous Eldar,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?
Haha! The angle of the photo is totally giving the “contemplated grenade” face, isn’t it? On a flat surface he’s tipping over and looks like he’s either fumbling the grenade or catching it in an “oh shit” moment. He’s a custom jobbie and I’m sure proud of the pose. Fave Boy for sure.
Gah, now I’m thinking about hacking off that grenade and giving him a skull. Too funny!
[EDIT] Ooooh just need some cleanup and highlights and this guy’s in the done pile. The done pile of two.
And so the descent into madness continues as I tackle the second half of the indomitus box.
First time I’ve used transfers in 20 years. Micro set/sol make a huge difference.
Thought I’d try and get one model close to the final scheme, and test I know what I’m doing. My first official space marine ever (my brother used to collect blood angels 20 years ago!).
I “learned” a hard lesson last night. Got the finishing touches done on my Ork, sealed him up and left him to dry over night.
…woke up this morning to a frosted mess. I spent a good amount of time earlier trying to figure out the cause, and all I could really find were a dozen anecdotal situations and no real evidence to support them.
My guess was that the universe hated me right down to the quantum level last night and conditions were just right for an ugly texture to form. No self-respecting propellant-hater paints without trusty liquid varnish and primers at their side, so I took some high gloss, diluted a touch, and gave my boy a once over. He’s (mostly) back! So there we go, now we have another anecdotal cause and fix.
[EDIT] Proud papa pics when dry and the sun hits.
I find i get frosting when I accidentally hit a model with too thick a coat. My experience is the gloss trick hasn’t saved me, so I’m glad it worked for you!
It was definitely a case of being too thick in a few areas, it’s just the way it managed to apply itself that was odd. I put it on with a pretty light hand last night but it laid down like I blasted it through a mesh, with areas of no coverage in spots and others with huge amounts. Not like I missed spots, either. Just, “huh, guess it didn’t like that spot in the middle of the broad side of his axe…” etc.
[EDIT] Hmm, thinking about it, I may have left the can out, uncapped after the last use of it. I’m gonna see if maybe my nozzle got clogged up.
Here he is. Pic makes him look overall glossier than he is, but I definitely wasn’t able to get him back to the Matt finish I started with. Too bad.
I’m not sure that I’m happy with the base’s colours, but I can’t really put my finger on what’s bugging me.
Blue/yellow is maximum contrast? I’d be more inclined to use a sort of charcoaly grey, indeed more like the thing you’ve got it sitting on. (I am a rubbish painter but my colour sense is quite good.)
That’s my take here too. Too much tonal similarity with the gold trim. Can you stain the sand maybe? I think even just a minor dulling of it will make a big impact.
That looks great dude, good work on the edge lines
And shoot, yeah, that’s just a pointed critique on why you may be dissatisfied with the base—I shouldn’t have left that comment without also mentioning how awesome he looks! In theory the sand is a great match, it just ends up making the gunmetal areas the “pop” (hence @RogerBW’s suggestion to match the base to the greys). I think you’ll find it will let the natural blue/gold complement work its magic.
Glad to see they handled a colour change nicely, the bases look awesome so it’d have been a shame to need to rework them entirely. They’re definitely letting the colour pops on the models do their good work now.
