No apologies necessary! I always mix it up in my head.
I think Japan has the most diverse mythology of pretty much any country, so would be great for getting away from so many straight up humans. Interested to see what they would do with Slavic though.
One of my friends is a Cthulhu Mythos fiend, so of course he’s already planning to pick it up. I do wonder how much it will change core BSG, which I’m still quite fond of.
I mostly keep it straight because I follow both companies, though the only Mythic game I own was an outside designer (Super Fantasy Brawl). It’s especially confusing as the original designer of Mythic Battles went with Mythic Games so is no longer involved in the game. Fortunately it doesn’t seem Monolith will overcomplicate the system (if anything they may have streamlined some elements slightly).
I don’t know Slavic myths at all, though I wonder if that would have the pull of the other options. That said I think a lot of the options would be interesting, just a few that may not make sense given the combat focus of the game.
I can see why Arkham Horror took the approach it did, but I think it was a mistake to make that the basis of the entire line.
To me Lovecraftiana / Yog-Sothothery / Cthulhu Mythos is about being the field-mouse exploring the combine harvester. If you try really hard and ruin your health, you might eventually work out how to turn it on; it won’t end well.
I’ve actually always disliked the Cthulhu Mythos because life is depressing enough as it is: I need happy endings. And, based on my understanding of the actual Cthulhu Mythos, “success” for any protagonist comes in the form of insanity.
EDIT: but I do like hard-boiled detectives and quite a few of the Noir visual tropes. I always liked the Noir aesthetic, but never the content.
As someone who has never played BSG, has never watched any of it (not counting the old series when I was a kid), having a different option that may be more streamlined (need more details on that) with a more recognizable theme for me is not undesirable. I’ll have to see more of the game, though, before I even think about picking it up.
I’m in a similar position regarding watching the series, but I did play the game once.
It was a glorious mess where the guy doing the setup mixed up the decks for allegiance cards, leading to all but one person being a cylon. Despite that, the humans almost won as we were all desperate not to be found out
We gave the game as a present to the guy we watched the series with. I remember playing a couple times… glorious mess might just about cover that experience. I loved the new show… never saw the old one though.
