The Crowdfunding Thread

My outstanding list is

  • Ausonia- originally due in August 2020 the hold ups appear to have gone from some amount of inexperience with manufacture to some weird thing around space in a warehouse. I no longer have much enthusiasm for the gameplay idea.

  • 1840: Vienna tramways. Held up by some pointless version of Top Trumps needing shipping simultaneously. Seriously, who even ordered it?

  • 18DO see Yashima’s update

  • 1822: Railways of Great Britain. The 3rd in the trilogy of 18xx game I was hoping would arrive before brexit and haven’t made their initial time. Ah well at least I wouldn’t have played them any time soon.

  • Tokyo series expansions. Due in Feb, as yet no indications of lateness. Tokyo Metro is really good so looking forward to the variant. Tokyo Tsukuji Market I’m yet to play. We’ll see :man_shrugging:

My expected list is very short

War of Whispers
I believe this is nearly in the UK

Die of the Dead
From our very own @MarkSP

Canvas
This was a weak moment, it might be good

Mercado de Lisboa
The filler Lacerda. Now I’ve got CO2 I’m a bit less excited for this, but the gameplay looks thinky and fun.

The good news at least is the no-tariff deal because I have a number still in progress

  • Newspeak - this took a while
  • Magnate: The First City - light economic game
  • GPS/Sequoia/Mountain Goats - so far, the best KS ones I got were from boardgametables, so Im excited for this one
  • Pax Renaissance - might prefer Porfiriana and Pamir 2, but we’ll see
  • Night of the Mummy - stand alone exp for Dracula’s Feast
  • Whale Riders (and the card game) - Knizia reprint
  • Tutankhamun - 25th Century run this one and it’s alright so far. So I’m excited on their reprint of Ra
  • Guards of Atlantis 2 - I’m acknowledging that this could fall flat with my group, but I want to try a MOBA tabletop game.
  • Cracked Earth - reminds me a lot of Trias
  • Spirits of the Forest: Moonlight - expansion to a Schacht game that I like.
  • Luzon Rails - Cube Rail title. Would be keen to see how it fares.
  • Rurik: Stone & Blade - liked the game. Backed the expansion.
  • Brick & Mortar - the designer like them economic games and 18xx, so he designed this one.

New speak has got the longest delay for such a simple game. They need to get better at choosing their manufacturers as their previous game had similar problems I think.

Kickstarters that I’ve pledged in 2020 and am waiting for fulfillment in 2021:

  • Cartographers Heroes + 3 Map Pack Expansions
  • The Deck of Many Animated Spells, Tarot and More for 5e - Pledged the Animated Tarot. Now I just have to find a campaign to use them in. ; )
  • Tiny Cthulhu - Have the main PDF, waiting on printed book and other PDF material
  • Mint Control
  • Sleeping Gods - I had hoped to play this with my gaming group in alternating weeks of our rpg campaign, but I may have to play this solo.

Only a year and a half late (so far). That’s mild by KS standards. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m still waiting on:

  • Oath
  • All of Railroad Ink
  • Import/Export
  • Shasn

Of those, I believe the last two are actually on a boat somewhere. I’m about equally excited for all of them (but not quite as excited as I was about Pax Pamir).

State of the Kickstarter – pillbox 2020

A list of the things I’m still expecting via Kickstarter pledges

  • 1822 - 18xx on Kickstarter has been a flurry over the last year or so… This one is expected Jan or Feb, I believe. 18Ireland and 18West I think will both fulfill at the same time?
  • 1840: Vienna Tramways – expecting this one by April or so… 1824 shall be tagging along with it
  • 1861/1867 – This one is also due sometime in 21Q1, I think?
  • 18DO – Q1 of 2021 should apparently be called “18xx Delivery Window”
  • Arcane Alley: Moonstruck Market – expansion to the indie design that I still haven’t played. Still, small publisher doing things right. I think this was actually expected during December, but I suspect their fulfillment partner pushed a more popular project ahead of it… so it should arrive sometime in January
  • Arkright; The Card Game – not due for a while?
  • Ausonia – Overdue… but should be fulfilling soonish
  • Bites – I got my GPS, Sequoia, Mountain Goats pledge, but am missing the Bites add-on. BGT said in an email they’d get it sent out shortly…
  • Bullet♥︎ – Looking forward to this one! Slated to fulfill in Feb I think
  • Canvas – I honestly thought this would arrive in December. Shouldn’t be long now
  • Dragon & Flagon w/expansion – I don’t know if I even mentioned this one. Been looking at D&F for a while, so I pledged for the game and expansion in a moment of weakness.
  • Frosthaven – not expected for a while
  • Glen More II & Highland Games – should be a while yet for this, I suspect
  • Import / Export – Definitive Edition – This is my longest overdue project. I guess it should be here soon?
  • Luzon Rails – No hope for this one soon; the original December 2020 ETA was apparently just for the PnP version, not for the stretch goal of being professionally produced
  • Mercado de Lisboa – this will be a while out, I suspect?
  • Millennium Blades: Collusion – Over a year late and counting. This is actually a late pledge… which is how Import/Export still gets latest pledge status.
  • Mini Express – this is also expected soon? I doubt it will make it before Chinese New Year though
  • Pax Renaissance (2nd Edition), Pax Viking, [pledge manager addon: High Frontier 4 All] – soon? who knows
  • Petrichor – I think I recently (as in today) posted something about not pledging for a game+expansion on Kickstarter if you haven’t played the base game… well, I’m about 4 deep into contradictory territory by this point on the list, aren’t I?
  • Planet Unknown – a few months out still on this one
  • Railroad Ink Challenge – This will be a lot of Railroad Ink
  • Rallyman Dirt – if I knew this was coming, I may have skipped out on Rallyman GT. Very excited
  • The Ratcatcher – This one just announced a CNY delay… the first of many projects to do so
  • Tokyo Metro w/Osaka Metro – I don’t know why I gave Jordan Draper more money after the disappointment of the Import/Export project… still, looking forward to this (and yet another entry of pledging for expansions with base games I haven’t even played)
  • Vinyl – I’ve really lost my passion for this one… so it may arrive and get sent right back out…
  • Whale Riders, While Riders: The Card Game, Yellow & Yangtze – still excited for this one!

This past year is the year that tought me to be smarter about Kickstarter. Buying a base game + expansion on KS without ever having played the base game is something I’ll definitely avoid in the future, having fallen victim to it several times in the past year and a half.

Originally, I started backing Kickstarters specifically to get base games that I had missed on the first round, using the idea that if they come back around for expansion campaigns, that means they are good enough to buy. But it is a slippery (and expensive) slope that I just can’t justify any more.

Is it just because it’s overdue, or was there something else about the campaign you didn’t like?

Just massively overdue and it doesn’t seem to bother him in the least

Ok so as it stands I am awaiting:

  • Blood on the Clocktower - at this point the thought of getting a large group together are impractical. So I’ve not gotten irate at all about the frequent delays.

  • Mercado de Lisboa- I’m excited for this one as a gateway to the big daddy Lisboa.

  • Dark tower - I’m still very much regretting backing this one, the adrenaline of backing it subsided quickly, but who knows it might surprise me.

  • Lords of vegas underworld - this one is a completionist move but having followed the updates I’m absolutely gutted for the issues they have hit and glad to be giving them some support.

  • Kanban EV - more of a curio, liked the EV appearance and fancied another meaty Lacerda game mechanic salad. If I ever get a game of this beyond solo I’ll be amazed.

  • Oath - This And Mercado are the two I’m most looking forward to.

  • Cthulhu Wars Duel - bit of a cheat but it is a preorder. After the SUSD review I fancied trying this game but not >£100 worth. This version seems to offer a 2 player variant with much of the same feel but a very appealing price point.

The only slight FOMO I’m suffering is on Frostpunk, the pandemic is making the solo version of this seem more appealing than normal. I may yet join a late pledge on it

It’s a tie between Import/Export and Shasn for most overdue project for me. I’ve no idea which will get here first! Hoping for no Brexit-related shenanigans…

I was just thinking, the other day, about the PbF Blood on the Clocktower we had on the old forums and how much fun it was. BotC is not a game I would enjoy in person, but I had a blast via PbF with it.

KS on the way, excited for all of these:

Nemo’s War Ultimate

Herbaceous Pocket

Cascadia (and Calico from the extras)

Die of the Dead

Popular/successful enough to get expansion or reprint campaigns != good. That said, it does mean people have played the game, which means that you can almost certainly find enough feedback to judge if you would want it, which is the more important reason I’d wait for a second campaign absent a proven track record with the people making it.

I’ve literally never met a game where I like the base game but don’t like or want expansion content though, so I can’t go with you on not buying it all together. :stuck_out_tongue:

(Well, okay, I guess I’ve skipped Gloomhaven expansion/sequel content because there’s just so much Gloomhaven in the core box that I may never need more. But Gloomhaven has the most content of any game I have ever played, so that’s an exception.)

It is a game I could mod again (or someone else could if they liked)…

I bought the Splendor expansion box and haven’t felt like playing Splendor since. Don’t know if that counts…

If you’d skipped GT, Dirt might not have happened.

This is the key point. All of the boardgame review sources that I trust have historically avoided reviewing Kickstarter games prior to them actually being released. So the only way I figured I would know if a game on Kickstarter was any good was if it came back around for a reprint campaign and there was critical coverage and some actual community feedback other than “10/10 because I’m so hype” and “1/10 to counter the 10/10 hype ratings”.

Unfortunately, even with this plan, Kickstarter ate more money than I care to admit. So… I just need to distance myself from Kickstarter because… That hype is a helluva drug

I’ve found a few. Great Western Trail’s Rails to the North seems to dilute an otherwise nicely formulated game. Never played GWT nor RttN, but after watching SUSD stream both, I liked what I saw in the base game but felt the expansion was just noise. I feel like Pfister tends to do this with his expansions.

Same and same.

I’ve got 7 ks I’m waiting on, more or less eagerly:

  • Four Humors - it’s listed, so I guess I backed it

  • Summit Dice - already got a d20 from them, and their designs are astounding. Something that will pass through generations, not just among nerds.

  • Airships: north pole quest - I know I shouldn’t have, but it looked so good! And airships.

  • Gun and Gun - I have this thing about getting all the anime games, even if I don’t use them :kissing_cat:

  • Tanto Cuore 10th anniversary - same as above, but way more expensive :scream_cat:

  • “Unique CNC dice set” - at this point it’s just funny to see him squirm about procrastinating. I don’t even need them, and they’re just d6s, but if he ever does send them, I’ll be impressed. He literally made up an imaginary sick friend to blame his problems on

  • Tilt5 holographic tabletop - the biggest and baddest of them all. Ordered six (six!) of them, and I don’t even know if they’ll be useful if they ever show up. Probably shouldn’t have spent two whole paychecks on it, though :flushed:

Hmmm, it would appear I have a few kickstarters in the pipeline. I remembered the Feld games (Hamburg and Amsterdam), which I’m hoping are good (easy sell on if they aren’t). Not too happy with how expensive they are (for standard editions even, not deluxe). But no retail, so they really have you over a barrel.

Otherwise, I’ve got

Four Humors
The Fuzzies (I love a good, stupid dexterity game)
Canvas, sounded like something a bit different
Planet Unknown - You know what else is unknown? Me backing this…I have completely forgotten about it. But - its a proper pledge, not just a dollar to use the pledge manager or anything. Was supposed to come out in October 2020, so obviously thats not happening.
