The Crowdfunding Thread

Later today Riftforce goes up on Kickstarter. It’s a neat little two-player game in the vein of something like Battle Line/Schotten Totten or Omen: Reign of War where two players fight over five locations by playing cards to them. The twist here is that at the start of the game the players compile each of their decks by drafting four of the ten card colors. I played the prototype at Essen last year and quite enjoyed it. A lot of the cards have conditional triggers which makes for a very satisfying ebb and flow during the game without getting lost in the realm of chaos.

I’ll post a link once the project goes live.

Looking forward to this. I played it at UK Games Expo last year when it was called “Chapter 2” – and while I admit I very much preferred the icon-based prototype artwork to the fantasy stuff they’ve got for it now, I did also enjoy the game.

Yes, I agree, the artwork and graphic is a bit too busy for my taste.

I gave in and got the weapon attachments for Oathsworn :see_no_evil: Originally I thought it was too much, but now the pledge manager is reopened I can kid myself that I’ve saved a few quid a month in the interim so $45 for pretty things isn’t that much really.

I am beyond help.

Imagine if this game is terrible… :grimacing:

…I mean, mazes?! Still hung up on that.

I saw this one mentioned on BGG news and the box looks so pretty and I have to research it some more:

Also my partner just finished playing Ghost of Tsushima and when I mentioned the theme and said the word “deckbuilding” he was definitely interested–unlike Obsession where I said Jane Austen and worker placement and he ran for the hills.

Also there is a teapot token and the artwork on the cards looks phenomenal.

Riftforce Kickstarter is live. 28€ including shipping is pretty reasonable. Backed it.

I have to say that’s a really odd choice of name for a game set in Japan.

I think the Philosophia is the “series” name, this is the second game… what they refer to with “Floating World” I have no idea. It is a little odd… there is an art gallery for Japanese art?

Edit: and also this–Ukiyo - Wikipedia and more

Ukiyo (浮世, “floating, fleeting, or transient world”) describes the urban lifestyle, especially the pleasure-seeking aspects, of the Edo-period Japan (1600–1867). The Floating World culture developed in Yoshiwara, the licensed red-light district of Edo (modern Tokyo), which was the site of many brothels frequented by Japan’s growing middle class. A prominent author of the ukiyo genre was Ihara Saikaku, who wrote The Life of an Amorous Woman . The ukiyo culture also arose in other cities such as Osaka and Kyoto.

I’ve long known of “the floating world” as a kenning for the hedonistic subculture of Japanese big cities, and especially of their brothel districts. I believe our copy of Masami Teraoka’s Waves and Plagues contains a lot of depictions of the milieu.

I’m not 100% sold on this, but I’m really close.

The only aspect of the SVWAG review that I didn’t love, was the fact that conquering/moving on someone’s territory was not generally worth the resources and time. Sounds like one of the modules may address this though.

It’s also a rare pseudo-DoaM game that works well at 2 (according to BGG), so that’s a big selling point.

I’m intrigued. Please tell me where I can find these.

I continuously miss everything I would back on Kickstarter. I don’t know how this happens. I search KS about 2-3 times a week. I search Games. I see nothing of interest. Then I will see a video from a board channel that I follow talking about this game that ‘just ended’ on KS and ‘keep an eye out’ for this to hit retail, and so on, for games that really interest me.

My most recent is Merchants of the Dark Road. Missed it by about 4 weeks.

Please do tell, what is your secret for striking while the iron is hot. I can’t even find the iron and my striking tool is an used plastic straw!

This thread! I love seeing what catches the attention of other members of this community.

Outside of that, it’s the semi-annual Kickstarter project GeekLists on BGG (current one here); they make 2 each year, one for projects launched between January and June and a second for projects launched between July and December.

There’s also the BGG GeekList for upcoming Kickstarter projects

And there are some Kickstarter “roundup” posts weekly on BGG and Reddit that summarize upcoming, recently launched, and soon-to-end projects. I’m subscribed to this one which I think is mirrored by the same user on reddit.

edit: I don’t search or browse Kickstarter.com at all. I think I’ve found 1 project that I ended up backing by following one of the “recommended for you” links at the bottom of a page after I backed a different project.

There’s quite a good weekly roundup at Tabletop Gaming

(They usually flag them up on their Twitter feed too)

Me too! Kickstarter boardgame projects are a firehose. There is no way to evaluate all of them for oneself. So what I end up doing is reading a lot of tiny feeds; SU&SD will tell me about the huge ones, I like a lot of the games that Indie Boards & Cards put out so I’m subscribed to their newsletter, I signed up at last year’s UK Games Expo for what is now Riftforce, and so on. If I see something interesting from a place other than here, I put it here too.

Same here - a guy who was taking solid copper bar stock and making it into dice, rather than the usual thin metal plating. They’re not perfect but they’re very nice.

Oooh the Railroad Ink Challenge kickstarter finally pushed out an update about the game and it looks like we’re getting more boxes!

I sure hope I can get a box for all my boxes! (spoiler: yes, yes I can)

I don’t know for certain, but as the pledge manager is still open, I think you can still late pledge for Merchants of the Dark Road.

That said, I believe the prices are higher if you didn’t at least back at $1, so I would take that into account.

Also, based on prices of Atlantis Rising at retail, I don’t know if I’d recommend backing the game unless you want the deluxe edition. I expect the standard will be cheaper at retail (unless you live in an area that’s not feasible).

As far as knowing what’s on KS, as others have said this forum, I’m on the Board Game Barrage Discord, the BGG threads, and far far too much time spent on YouTube, and following Twitter and FB of companies I like, lol.

Is it… a pillbox?

Okay. I’ll log out.

Did you go for the “mega” box in with your pledge?

I added the “purple” box via the pledge-manager so it’s nice to know the stretch goals won’t be rattling around in it.
