What happens after the 6mths?? Do you turn up and give us a slap round the head?
And by memoir, are we talking more Adam Kay’s “This is going to hurt” or Frank McCourt’s “Angela’s Ashes”?

Adam Kay, but less made up than his (allegedly). And you will find out after 6 months…. Isnt that exciting?
Very happy to give it a listen and then leave you a review!
Lovely, thankleberry +, I’ve sent along a promo code for you
Just need to finish listening to the Hanging Tree by Ben Aaronovitch (3 hours left) and I’ll crack on!
(You’re pushing the latest volume of Michael Palin’s diary back, so I hope you ARE grateful!
)
I am honoured ![]()
The Hanging Tree is good
I found the second one a bit dark, but read 3-8 on holiday in a week
Kate’s getting me the physical book for Christmas
Is there an over/ under on puns?
There may be puns.
You? Puns? My goodness, how unexpected that would be.
looks at his sarcasm detector
Hm.
I’ve read them all (well currently reading the new one - listening to one and reading another can feel a bit confusing!) but found that all the audiobooks are on my library app so enjoying listening to them. The narrator is pretty good.
I hear that Palin, on the other hand, is absolutely livid.
Congrats on the new edition! Genuine question: If it’s an autobiography, why do the author and protagonist have different names? (Is it just not officially autobiographical for plausible-deniability and all-names-have-been-changed reasons?)
About 30 mins on so far and enjoying it.
Similar voice to Adam Kay but perhaps less macabre! Reminds me q bit of Ben Aitken too
Good question! Actually I added a little addendum (in my own voice) to the end of the audiobook to explain it - short version is that I found it easier to be honest when I wrote as my alter ego rather than myself. Everyone else’s name changed so it seemed appropriate to change it too. Then, having written it, it proved -very- difficult to change my name back and it also seemed slightly protective as I was fairly honest about some other people, as well as myself.
Glad you’re enjoying it!
Long story short, Nick ended up having to change his name to Alan Reece.
He is a famously angry man.
My review for @Lordof1 ‘s book
“This memoir reminds me very much of This Is Going To Hurt by Adam Kay. It’s a similar story of someone going into a profession they’ve dreamed of since they were quite young, only to find the reality very much different to the dream.
Nick has found some good little stories in his first two years of practice as a vet. While it perhaps lacks some of the shocks of the aforesaid This Is Going To Hurt, it is told with humour, compassion, and a voice that, while very occasionally avoiding self-pity by hair’s breadth, keeps the reader interested.
There is a lot of humour, a lot of reflection on the vagaries of the life of a vet and excellently drawn characters. Oh, and some terrible puns!
Well worth your time!”
