I managed to squeak in a game of Too Many Bones this morning, this time using Boomer vs. Nom. Boomer is a ton of fun, though pretty darn squishy in the earlier rounds. I was forced to rest on more than half of my eight days, which really put a damper on chances to improve my loot. That said, I managed to reach Nom without actually losing a battle.
After deciding to take the “expert” option on day 2 (always the same encounter) and nearly dying, I played it safe for most of the rest of the game. This meant I needed the full seven days to try to buff up as much as possible before taking on Nom. The game lets you assess the Tyrant card before the match, so I knew I was coming up against a regenerating brick wall and would need as much damage output as possible.
Sadly, I just couldn’t outpace his regeneration in time. I rolled decently well, but never went on a streak, meaning he could rebuff and recoup by the time I was able to land a dinger again. It was close though. If I had landed max. damage with my grenade and its booster die on my last big swing, it would have been enough to take him out. Alas.
This was my first game on our new patio set, which has quite a bit more table space than our last makeshift solution. I should be able to run two Gearlocs out in the open air next time, which continues to delight. I have yet to play this indoors, actually!
[EDIT] More outdoor solo gaming this afternoon as I took the day off for myself (been volunteering my last few weekends/holidays to a construction project for family) while my partner and lil’ sweetie get some quality nephew time.
Anyway, Calico, still out on the patio just soaking it up (and sucking 'em back, as it turns out. It’s hot!), and did I get a heavenly draw? You bet! I logged a score of 67, by far my highest, and for the cherry on top, I managed for the first time to get all three of my scoring tiles fully completed. That felt nice, especially after I realized the folly of placing an AAAA-BB tile next to an AAA-BB-C tile; I got a lot of stripes in this game, and I was thankful for them.
I managed 6 buttons but no rainbow, so that accounted for 18 points. I got one 7-point and two 3-point cats (came close to a big 11 but needed to cut my losses there), with the remaining 36 points coming from the quilt itself (11/11/14).
I’m not going to sugar coat it: I was lucky early and consistently with my draws, and I leaned hard into the fact that I was playing solo here; this was probably a 90 minute game.
Still, good fortune aside, I feel like I worked to earn it, and that feels real nice.
