I really like this one ! I’ll switch for it !
Thanks, that was all great. I think I managed to work everything out (as in, why I get the things you said I did), I hope some of this stuff gets more intuitive the more I play. Most of my mistakes were in using the values of each stat, rather than the modifier… oops.
Just a couple of questions, which I’m almost certainly misunderstanding, but just want to get in my head properly.
On this page - Wizard - DND 5th Edition it says:
Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier
As I’m 3rd level, doesn’t that mean my spell save DC is 8 + 6 (6 = +2 per level up to level 4) +4 = 18?
And does the same apply to my Attack bonus? So +6 + 4 = 10?
Just so I get my head around it?
Thank you SO much for all the help too, it’s a godsend. My new character sheet is here - Poot Character Sheet.pdf - Google Drive

This should be Salazar completed on paper. I can’t find an image anywhere close of what he looks like.
@Sagantine to echo @IssiNoho77 thanks so much for your help, I wouldn’t have had a clue how to do this without you.
@Captbnut - head to http://dmheroes.com/ . You can choose race, gender etc, then click the little ‘edit’ link on the portrait to customise your portrait.
The proficiency bonus on the level up chart isn’t cumulative for each level - it stays at +2 from level 1 - 4 then gets upgraded to +3 at level 5.
Things definitely get more intuitive once you start playing! Most of D&d ends up being roleplaying with d20 rolls for resolution, applying the correct bonus from your skills or traits.
See, I knew it would be something stupid
Thank you.
It’s been very cool seeing how to build a character. I’d only used a pre constructed character from the Starter Set before.
I’m happy with Salazar, but are there known combinations of race, class and background that can be overpowered? I know that’s not the point.
There are synergies between races and classes, but for truly munchkin builds you often need to use monster races and have a very very accommodating DM. 5e has limited a lot of the powergaming potential of the system with a few rules such as ‘concentration’ - many buffing spells no longer stack.
One particular synergy that I consider extremely strong in low levels is the elf/half elf immunity to the Sleep spell. It can trivialize most early encounters when you can make everyone but you fall asleep instantly.
Other than very specific spell/abilities synergies like that, there’s just optimization in regards to racial ability boost and the best abilities for your class. For example, the Gnome +2 intelligence goes very well with the Wizard.
Character done. Hopefully the link works.
May I introduce What To Do With You. AKA Shoo.

5e is pretty balanced and DM’s should crack down on abuse anyway.
Its like the old saying: “Beware of power, for there’s always a bigger fish.”
Or something like that.
Any decent GM will modify to reflect power plays.
The super tough axe warrior always has to face troupes of archers in a castle…
Damned pesky archers on their fancy castle walls! CHARGE!
[Rolls new character 10 mins later]
The most important thing is keeping the game fun. Power-gaming is fine when it isn’t combined with a self-centred playing attitude. Having an overpowered character can be cool if they are still roleplaying a member of the team. But if they are playing it like ‘I’m the star, you guys are side characters’ then it’s over. Nobody is going to have fun but them.
The mature thing is to take that person aside and talk with them about the fact that ‘hey man, this is a co-op game’. The un-mature thing (that I’ve definitely never done… Never!) is to plot the precise method to completely obliterate their character. The DM is literally more powerful than the gods of the setting… It is foolishness to think that you can get away with shamelessly gaming the system at the expense of others.
Make a character you want to play, don’t play one because it’s best.
I’m going to update my sheet to switch background. I do have a question: On my old sheet, Is the +5 modifier next to my Survival due to the proficiency I choose as a Folk hero? I can’t find a way to properly word my question…
If the proficiency is a +2 modifier, should I put my current survival back down at +3 instead of +5? Conversely, as I want to choose acrobatics as my new proficiency, should I add +2 to my current modifier (along with putting a P in the box next to it?)

Amended sheet
@Cokho Yes. You are correct. Since survival is a proficient skill for folk hero it gets the +2 from proficiency bonus. Therefore, reduce it by 2 if you change background and don’t have proficiency anymore.
Now add 2 to acrobatics as it’s now proficient.
I like to think as a player, how can I make everyone else’s game a little bit better and fun for them? If I can stay true to that, then everything’s golden.
Sorry @Sagantine can I swap goodberry for cure wounds?

If you imagine one red eye and one blue eye, skin pocked from childhood disease then you have Salazar
