Leaving Earth (Base Game and Mercury) Pbf

I probably will never use a Saturn. I’m just a completionist.

obviously I am fine with that tiny bit of retro-fix.

excuses why I haven't been a very engaged participant in the exploration of our solar system

I have migraines. This one lasted 6 days. The pain isn’t even that bad, I just can’t think straight and feel like my IQ drops by 10 points. But it seems to be over for now and tomorrow, I’ll take the time to look at the situation and hopefully figure out something a bit smarter.

(Spoilers I’ve mostly been surveying places so I haven’t had to concoct randomised tables so I don’t see other people’s results.)

@pillbox do you want the result of your survey to be public?

Yes. NASA is a team player  . My survey results will be public unless otherwise indicated

I’ll pass for now while I do some math.

Who is up? I took some notes the other day what I want to do. The tts save was immensely helpful.
I would be interested in trading for Junos or Soyuz technologies btw. My main offer is probably going to be Ion Thrusters as I haven’t managed to test much else. I will be testing landing soonish though

Oh, I think it might be me. (If I go silent please post a reminder – I may simply not have noticed!)

OK, I have ¤35. Buy Landing advancement, leaving ¤25.
Separate Soyuz #1, testing Re-Entry, buying off any outcome. If it survives undamaged, test Landing, buying off any outcome.
Repeat with Soyuz #2 and #3 until I get an outcome I can’t afford to buy off or I run out of Soyuz. If any Soyuz is still in orbit at that point, leave it there.

First Vostok.

Reentry success! Pay $10
Landing Major failure Pay $5

$10 remaining.

Second Re-entry Success! Pay $10.

No money left. Stop there?

I’ll give the landing a try just to see what’s there, then leave #3 in orbit.

Suffering a minor failure, the capsule suffers some damage.

Am I up yet?

ISAS :jp: turn:

Summary

I am buying Reentry technology for 10€ (my tablet on which I’m typing has hidden the dollars away)

I’ll be sending my last two Atlas Rockets up to LEO with my repaired Ion Thruster as payload. The Ion Thruster will pick up the working probe and try to shoot for the moon flyby (again). If it is a success that should be fine, if it is a failure, I’ll buy it off and send then Ion Thruster back to Earth by itself)

In any case my Ion Thruster tech should be completely fine now and I can fire my Ion Thruster up in space safely to continue on towards Ceres.

If one Ion Thruster goes back to earth, can I face both reentry and landing hazards? If so I’ll buy off whatever happens. In the financial worst case I’ll be broke now with a broken Ion Thruster back on Earth.

Whatever happens I’ll cede my turn for now because either I am done anyway or Ill need to think what else I’ll be doing.

@RogerBW if you can confirm your turn is over I want to check something with you about @yashimas turn…

Sorry. My turn is over.

@RogerBW my reading is that once Ion thrusters are fired in the first year of a multi year manoeuvre you do not need to fire them each year?

Yes. You commit to “an X-year manoeuvre from A to B”, test your advancement once per Ion, and each one that works generates 5×X thrust.

An ion thruster on its own can’t face a Reentry hazard: only a capsule can do that. (Other things don’t have to worry about staying below 6G, maintaining ≤30°C internal temperature, and so on.) So it just passes through that with no harm done. But it can try Landing.

Ok, so I’ll go with the Landing.

ISAS :jp: turn:

  • Buy Reentry tech for $10
  • Send remaining 2 Atlas Rockets to LEO with the repaired Ion Thruster as payload
  • Ion Thruster will re-unite with the working probe to form Temptation II
  • Temptation II: Fire Ion Thruster towards Lunar Flyby
    • Success? Great!
    • Failure? Meh, buy off for $5, separate from probe, and attempt to land the Ion Thruster on Earth.
      • Success? Buy off for $10
      • Failure? Oh, maaan. Buy it off still for $5
  • Supernova still on its merry way to Inner Planets

I now should have:

  • no Atlas Rockets
  • fully tested Ion Thruster tech
  • some money left, depending on how Temptation II does.

I’ll end my turn for now and see if anyone is willing to make some kind of deal regarding Junos or Soyuz tech in exchange for Ion Thrusters (which is the only thing I can offer that is not already available to everyone…)

@yashima a MAJOR FAILURE. $5 To pay off.

Testing landing as per above…
