I had the same thoughts
ALIEN - Fate of the Nostromo - big, big fan of the Alien/Aliens universe, already own Another Glorious Day in the Corps (and all the expansions). And I’m ok with the game not being all about shooting aliens with a variety of weapons. The Alien movie isn’t about that, and the game shouldn’t be either. But reading a few reviews, they are saying there is just a lack of tension. No time limit, and if you’re in the same space as the Alien, you just run away.
Please let this just be a chess set, please let this just be a chess set, please let this just be a chess set…
checks BGG
Well that’s disappointing.
Shrug I think a branded chess set with an accompanying How-To book would’ve been a winner.
As long as the pieces weren’t pink and purple.
Lost Explorers
I love the physical and visual design so much, and kept thinking that perhaps it was a game I might enjoy despite the lower BGG rating; but having finally read through a bunch of comments… this just isn’t something I should buy.
Oh wow, that’s very shiny.
Ah I thought you meant Lost Expedition and wondered about what you consider a lower rating. My mistake. The cover looks indeed shiny.
I’m not buying Brian Boru because
- I shouldn’t buy games that are cheap relative to their RRP
- I’m not really playing what I have
- I can’t see when I’d play it in a reasonable timeframe
- Osprey games tend to stay reasonably available
It does look interesting though!
(yes I’m posting here to publicly declare I’m not buying it)
EDIT I really want to, I love the look
Surely 4 means you are going to buy it?
I’m stronger than that (I think)
So I may have been tempted on a keen price, but one of my favourite OLGS has put up Ultimate Railroads for preorder but -
- Not expected until Q3 2022
- Costs £100!
It’s getting easier to not buy new games due to price
And it might become even cheaper to just get the old base game if you only want to try the system.
I’ll only play in a group that has three copies already. Even more reason not to buy it quite frankly.
A local consignment sale just had online sales going for the first time and my wife had me look through the games, as you can sometimes find some really good deals.
They had Tawantinsuyu: the Inca Empire available for $15, but I passed on it, as I’m trying to be better about buying things just because they are a good deal.
Then, see here.
Although I REALLY want to play it and my wife seemed quite interested when I spoke to her about it, I resisted the urge to buy Suburbia a couple of days ago because I wasn’t sure enough how much or little text is on the tiles themselves and they didn’t have it in French. Upon further inspection, I think I made the right choice.
It’s on order now, though.
I’ve found Suburbia a bit too much of an optimization puzzle rather than a fun game, even though it was featured in the “Hexagonal Tile-Laying Game Fest 2013” on the merit of how it told emergent stories – stories I never saw.
I enjoyed it for a while, but then realised I wasn’t playing it any more and eventually sold it.
I think my interpretation of that review was less “emergent stories” and more “this city I’m building is horrifying” – which would still only happen if you made a specific point of considering your creation as a city rather than as a set of puzzle pieces. I don’t think that could be much more than a side-note to the gameplay, though.
I’ve only played Suburbia a few times, but I’ve always enjoyed it lots, so I’ve been not buying it for years now – but every time that occurs to me, I conclude that I should buy it sometime : )
