Last game you bought?

I’ve joined the waiting list for the update pack :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I mean the responsible thing would have been to not buy the game until I could realistically play it, then I would’ve waited until the second printing and not need the update pack. But let’s not think about that!

An absolutely brilliant production of a game arrived this morning: Mini Express. A spiritual successor to Mini Rails (which I have no information nor opinion on). I’ve never heard of Moaideas Game Design (the publisher) before, but they definitely have my attention. The colors they chose are just so wonderful; I have a gripe about two of the railroad companies’ colors and being able to distinguish between them in low-light, but the player colors are (probably?) stolen right from a Paolo Mori game.

The production decisions were well done. The US map is a bit confusing to me, having some lesser-known cities on the board in a train-themed game… instead of some of the regular, mainstays cities you find in historically-inspired US-set game maps. Oh well, people in Omaha need more representation in games (probably?)

my package of bricks arrived

I’m already impressed that Sidereal contains a “how to teach this game” sheet. The material quality also looks to be quite nice for both games. I remember when Pegasus was my go-to shop for ordering rpg books online. no boardgames back then. I like what they’ve managed to become. As far as I know they also do right by the local shops. ps: I like the new cover for both games way better than the originals.

I’m a tad surprised at the Sidereal/Siderische (presumed) cognate.

i am 99% sure that Siderisch is not in the Duden (our oxford dictionary)

i was wrong.

it’s from latin i assume. lots of crossovers in languages that have absorbed some latin.

Everything sounds better in German

I find myself in love with the word “erklären”. To make clear, klär, yes, it just feels right.

I beg to disagree. If you had said Italian or French… fine. But German is a weird language of flat sentences and staccato word salads and beige games… I wish I could have bought the English but a) it was sold out and b) if I want any chance at all at playing this I cannot exclude those among my friends for whom English is a challenge.

I very much prefer to say „Explain! Explain!“ in my very best Dalek imitation. I had never before noticed though how precise the meaning of erklären is. Interesting.

There’s a thing people say when sitting down to a demo in Essen: “sure, we’re happy to play in English”. Sometimes this means “I am happy to play in English, and I will translate your blurb for my three friends who aren’t really”.

I was going to ask you, but guessed that for a game targeting 5+ players, it would be easier for you to have the German edition.

It’s really a shame it’s not one of the many, many games that comes in English/German

For us this always means: We’re happy. Every few years we have a friend along who is not quite fluent though and then we will translate.

Did you know the word we use for the people who explain games to us?

Erklärbär

(Explain bear doesn’t quite capture the meaning)

Ps as an added bonus the e at the start very much sounds the same as the two ä so its more like ärklärbär

Now I want that on a t-shirt, with appropriate cartoon. Except of course I’m always wearing a publisher shirt when it would be funny.

Well I was going to buy some mythos packs for Arkham Horror LCG: Path to Carcosa, but they were either nonexistent or marked up 300-400%. I was unable to find a secondary market for them with a cursory search, so I swung through my FLGS and picked up "The Dream Eaters deluxe box instead, and am rounding up the decks for that cycle.
