Last game you bought?

Mine too - played last night. I’d say Brass level complexity with a few niggly rules (again like brass), with lots of depth to explore.

Bought Taverns of Tiefenthal secondhand. Got a decent price which is good as I’m not too sure I’m going to like it

This box size thing is really getting me hype for Search for Planet X, so I can relate.

It’s my most played game, I adore Taverns of Tiefenthal. Make sure you play with all the modules before making a judgement on it though. Some reviewers have made it seem like they’re either optional or are like mini-expansions, but it’s better to think of them as a staggered way to learn the full game.

Seeing as we’ve entered lockdown v2.0, my girlfriend wanted a copy of Flamme Rouge so we could play with friends over Zoom. She didn’t have to ask twice. Quick Google search and there’s some handy websites that allow you to use dummy teams without getting the peloton expansion, so hopefully it will get a fair bit of play.

Seeing as I was paying for shopping I guess I might as well make the most of it. So add Air, land & Sea and Architects if the West Kingdom to that list.

If you don’t know about it https://frdealer.pythonanywhere.com/ is an excellent web app for doing your cards. We’ve used it loads for Zoom play

I did not mentio know. And now I do

This was bought long enough ago, and has been anticipated hotly enough that I’m surely making a double-post here, but Cosmic Frog has arrived and oh my goodness!

I want to see Cosmic Frogs in Recent Games, Show us your bits and all the other relevant threads, please

I possibly should have left it alone, but I’ve gone Full Dredd in the current Osprey sale.

I don’t currently have a miniatures skirmish game, and the Wildlands-based Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter was quite appealing on multiple levels – something different for my collection; plays quickly; includes a solo mode with expansion The Dark Judges; has a theme I quite enjoy; and (in typical Osprey fashion) all of the components and production values seem very nice. I’d intended to buy it a while ago in a prior sale after looking at some reviews; but Osprey’s customer service proved to be remarkably bad, on which account I’d missed out. (I feel slightly less disgruntled about it now, because the current sale has it a few quid cheaper than last time.)

Judge Dredd: The Cursed Earth (a variant of The Lost Expedition) rounded out the order. The difference between paying for that and then getting free shipping, or omiting it and paying for shipping, was about £2 extra – and I quite like TLE, so adding that was a bit of a no-brainer for me : )

My birthday was earlier this week, and my sister got me Kingdomino with the Giants expansion. Everything fits in the (smaller) expansion box, which is very pleasing!

Reason enough to get Giants then.

my Viscounts package arrived at last. after last week’s campaign update that they were finishing up shipping and me still without a shipping notice I was getting nervous… the completion of the series looks good on my shelf:

In a week of Kickstarter arrivals, It’s a Wonderful World arrived. Wow, the box is BIG! Some may say unnecessarily so for a card drafting game. It’s Manspreading: The Game.

Sure, have entire boxes dedicated to not needing a baggy for 20 cubes. And why not have some empty boxes that serve no purpose other than providing an option of moving some things that are already in a box, within the main box, to another box?

The campaigns are cool, but everything (bar one bit) in there could be a few small envelopes, instead of more boxes.

I already have a box full of things that are made redundant by the KSEs but I don’t quite have the heart to discard.

I got 1853 recently - which is designed by Francis Tresham himself.

Still waiting for my kickstarters. My friend got my Pax Pamir 2 copy. Just have to wait until lockdown is over.

So I won a damaged copy of Nova Luna in a FLGS auction and, after listening to the SUSD podcast got The King is Dead

Time for another installment of “pillbox Bought A Bunch Of Stuff And A Lot Of It Arrived While He Was Moving And Organizing His Collection”!

  • Ghost Stories: White Moon & Ghost Stories: Black Secret

After getting Ghost Stories setup and halfway playing through a game, I realized it had a strong potential to stick around. And with Asmodee and its subsidiaries seemingly flirting with disaster every quarter, I didn’t have a lot of confidence that the expansions would maintain good availability, especially with Last Bastion arriving on the scene, allegedly reimplementing Ghost Stories and then falling to fairly harsh critical reception (which admittedly a lot of said reception would probably be similar if Ghost Stories was released in 2020). So: there, job done, completionism completed (ignoring promos, which I normally do for all but my absolute favorite games)

  • Crokinole (Mayday Maple) -

In the past, I’ve been pretty handy with a woodshop (I have likely about $10000 of woodworking tools and equipment in my garage, a hobby I intend to return to once my children require less than 110% of my free time… you know… in 20 years or so); I’ve always fancied making my own Crokinole set. Well, add to my lack of time as well as the fact that I’ve never seen a Crokinole board in person, I was somewhat as a loss as to where to even begin.

Enter Mayday’s 2020 Crokinole Kickstarter campaign. A reasonable price (even with the $40 shipping fee paid after the campaign) for a decent board. Unfortunately, Mayday boards are not premium products – they are passable, at best.

But, a low-cost board fits my needs perfectly; I’m handy enough to maintain the surface (which is not game-ready when it arrives, despite what Mayday said) and do minor repairs (because of shoddy materials used) and ultimately use it as a template for when I decide to make my own board.

  • Akrotiri -

Akrotiri has been on my wishlist for so long I had nearly forgotten about it. It recently had another print run and that must have knocked some earlier editions loose on the secondary market because I was able to pick this up for practically the cost of shipping the small box (a year ago, secondhand copies were going for 3 or 4 times as much). I originally learned of this so long ago that it was by watching Rahdo run through things. Still, a lovely little 2-player game (that has an unofficial solo mode) that’s charmingly simple without actually feeling abstract.

  • Ashes expansions

I had been keeping my eyes open for discounted Phoenixborn on various OGSs and throwing them in my “hold until I meet the free shipping threshold” pile. When Ashes 1.5: Reborn was announced, I took the opportunity to pick up all of the 1.0 Phoenixborn that I hadn’t already found as they were being offered directly from Plaid Hat at what would be considered a moderately good sale price for an OGS.

Currently I have a complete 1.0 set except 1 that is still attached to an OGS order that contains a pre-order and another 2 of the Phoenixborn that I ordered from Plaid Hat but ended up being backordered (I received an email from Colby saying they would just send me a 1.5 copy of those Phoenixborn when they arrived since the 1.0 editions weren’t going to see another print run).

  • Roborally (2016)

I have a really garbage copy of the 2010 Avalon Hill printing of Roborally. So when I found the 2016 edition on an auction, I threw a low minimum bid on it and forgot about it. A couple of weeks later, I received a GeekMail asking for money. I said to myself, “What nerve!” And then it dawned on me that they were requesting the payment of the bid I had made and I relented. So, currently, I have both editions. I’ll probably try to find my AH copy a new home, if not for anything but the box is an obnoxious size.

  • Sunset Over Water -

Joining the BGG 1-Player Guild has been an expensive undertaking. As I delve deeper into solo gaming, I’ve discovered there are different moods that call for different experiences. Also, I really do love Beth Sobel’s artwork and I like the tranquil setting for this game. It almost feels athematic for me to play this considering how hectic my days have been over the last several months (working all day and then giving my partner a break from our children. It really feels like 2 full-time jobs, but that seems insensitive to those that actually work 2 full-time jobs, especially when they also have young children… so I’ll just say: tranquility is not the tone of my house)

  • Mafia de Cuba w/ Revolución -

Look, yes, I already own Mafia de Cuba. And I haven’t played it yet. But I got a good price on it and can recoup some of that by selling my spare copy of MdeC. I’m not really big on hidden role games, but the reason this keeps popping up on my radar (and the reason I currently own two copies) is that it gives players agency in whether they want to have to lie or not – not 100% agency, but definitely more than The Resistance and its ilk.

  • Say Anything -

A family weight title I’ve been looking to grab at discount for a while. Nothing spectacular but admirable because instead of using canned responses printed on a card, you’re asked by the game to write something yourself which means me and my friends can actually be funny rather than relying on someone else’s jokes.

  • Altiplano: Alpaca Rider Role Tile -

I mentioned before that I usually avoid promos for all but my favorite games: which is true.

  • :bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone::bone: a.k.a. Too Many Bones -

After looking for this on the secondary market for years but usually only finding people unloading entire collections of TMB rather than a base game, and often getting outbid by people paying more than retail, I gave up on the secondary market. I ordered this directly from Chip Theory Games. It’s tempting to go “all in” on something like this, but honestly the components are just too much and slightly offputting. If I make it through the content in this box, I’ll look into adding more to my collection but until then, this enormous box is Enough Bones

None of these appear to be Roads and Boats.

Yeah, I ought to pick these up soon.

I haven’t played with most of them, and since I completed the set it’s fallen in my ranking simply because I enjoy other games more.

Still reckon this is the most playable version. Earlier versions can get desperately dog-slow.

I hardly ever play this. Ought to try a PBF!

Oooh, let us know how Sunset over Water goes. It’s on my list.

Also Crokinole. I have nowhere to store it, I have no-one to play it with, but I wants it.
