Grabbed a couple games at the thrift store for a few bucks each, hadn’t really planned on getting either of these, but they were half off, and that’s basically free money!
In violation of the Geneva conventions, however, they’ve taped the boxes shut
What a steal. But ouch! That tape is horrifying. I think the thing which offends me the most is that they weren’t even careful about it, so now you’re stuck with those bunched up bits of tape (unless you gamble on removing it, and succeed… or perhaps it could be steamed off?? but would that just damage the box?)
I suspect in an effort to reduce plastic, I’ve had a couple of games turn up with no shrinkwrap but with four big round clear stickers firmly attaching the sides of the lid to the bottom of the box, and I’ve never been so stressed out by the process of “unwrapping” a box as I’ve been when sloooowly peeling those off the box (8 times, after cutting each into two halves), dreading a sudden tearing of cardboard the entire time.
Ravensburger games all have the four circle stickers. They do not shrink wrap any of their games anymore. I have not had one rip the box yet, but I also don’t have very many of their games. I am sure it is bound to happen to somebody.
I just caved and ordered games before the move.
FOMO got me.
I used to love Kingdom Builder.
Played it to death on the app though. Never wanted to play it on the table anymore.
Wanted to buy Winter Kingdom.
Friends bought it first (the same ones that have all the same games I do basically), so I didn‘t.
Played it at their place, loved it even better than I ever did Kingdom Builder
Waffled for a while
It went OOP. It‘s Queen, it will either stay OOP or come back in some mangled form…
I howled with regret
Remember how I asked about Reavers of Midgard and if it was worth buying at half-price? Well, I needed something to avoid paying „Mindermengenaufschlag“ (basically saving shipping costs) and what did I find through sheer accident ? Yes, Winter Kingdom. At a bad price, 10,- more than it was at most places while it was widely available but still normally priced.
So while I wasn‘t fully convinced about Reavers, Winter Kindom provided a second incentive and so… I spent all week waffling some more (oh yes, I didn‘t go down easily). I really wanted to wait until after the move. But today, when I got off work for my 3 week moving vacation… my brain relaxed and I lost my hold on the FOMO urges and … went and bought Winter Kindgom, Reavers of Midgard and the Ark Nova Map Pack (because I only got 1 last year at SPIEL for my friends who had the game which I didn‘t buy then because they had it and now I have a copy, and our other friends‘ son has a copy and…).
It‘s not like I do not have games, or new games, or incoming games. I know. I‘ll work on all of that soon enough.
I bought a couple of saashi and saashi game. One which involves corralling customers onto a cruise ship and another about a band being in harmony but perhaps also being the best one in the harmony.
I am so close to buying 4-5 games in one big blowout. The only thing that’s been stopping me is their availability in the UK, but once they’re in stock and not at absolutely maximum price I’ll be buying:
Ready, Set, Bet
Earth
Heat: Pedal to the Metal
Star Wars: Outer Rim + expansion (ouch, the money)
Vaalbara
Reprints when they allegedly happen soon: Fortune and Glory
El Grande
(This is a fail post for this thread, but I expect to update with actual buying of these in the next few months)
I’m havering on Earth. More Euroey than my usual sort of game. Maybe I’ll get bored with it. But much more fun in person than on BGA (no offence meant to my current BGA fellow players).
Nerdz Day happened. For all the non US customers, refresher, it’s basically Prime Day or Black Friday for board games. 100 sales, best prices of the year. Notched up, in order:
Chronicles of Avel - $21 - Sounds good for the kids. My First Quest/Scenario game, but well reviewed for all ages.
My City - $19 - Back when, I bought NY Zoo instead of this. Currently “date night” is take out in the guest room, due to randomly scheduled breastfeedings, so this is for that.
Sleeping Gods - $53 - Hoping that in the next few years this could be a full family activity. Won’t get a better price by waiting.
Flamecraft - $21 - Hadn’t heard about this one before. Great art, well reviewed but light so easier to get to the table. I was sold when I saw the character in the wheelchair. Not usually such a hook for me, but the way he was dropped in was just so right. Not a diversity checkbox, he just belonged there and owned his shop. I saw my daughter in the game and the rest of the package was already enticing.
Long Shot: The Dice Game - $16 - Something I could play when my parents visit. I’m solidly not a R&R guy but this one seems more of a hybrid?
Star Wars Deckbuilder - $21 - Such an odd genre. Ascension, Star Realms, Shards, SWDeckbuilder…all so similar and yet some are so good and some are so bad. I passed on this due to being heavy into Star Realms but I keep hearing about it (maybe just from @COMaestro) so I was waiting for a price like this.
Tiletum - $30 - OMG SO BEIGE. Got the heritage from Grand Austria Hotel and Lorenzo Il Magnifico. Past research suggested I didn’t need this but when it was in the sale that tipped the scale.
Missed out on an Outer Rim box insert; out of stock before I could purchase.
Also a lot of great deals on games I already had - Outer Rim Unfinished Business, Arnak Expedition Leaders, Ark Nova, Cat in the Box, Brass Birm (more meager discount there), Leaders of the New Dawn, Canvas, WotR Cards, Radlands, Blitzkrieg, Quacks.
And a few I passed on: Mille Fiori, Woodcraft, GWT Argentina (sticking with original), Archeos Society (Sticking with Ethnos), Endless Winter, Architects Works of Wonder.
Always a fun day, especially the running conversation on Reddit about hard decisions and missed opportunities.
Alien Bug Hunt, saw it on Amazon while I was browsing, and remembered that I’d looked at way back when I was considering Aliens:Another Glorious Day in the Corps. Obviously it’s not as detailed as AGDITC, but still looks like fun. Even if the aliens are dice. Maybe I’ll add the cool alien figures from the other game.
That one caught my attention back when they showed it for one of the AwSHUX’s, but I never saw it pop up in stores. And now I’m at the point where I am trying to be a bit more picky about games I purchase, so it’s fallen by the wayside.
Race to the Raft, saw it in some reviews, sounded pretty good. Then I got an email from a store, and it was on the new game list for an ok price, so grabbed it. It’s co-op, and you save cats, it’s a tick in every box.
And just bought The Number as well, because it sounded weird, but in a good way.
The Unmatched Battle Boxes I backed…last year? Each one holds 12 Boost Cubes, which can each hold about two fighters worth of cards, minis, sidekick tokens, and any other bits a fighter might have. Only fighter they don’t work for is the T-Rex (she just cannot be contained!). Additionally, the boxes have an insert for the boards, which I currently have filled with the sleeves I ordered. Also pictures are the alternate artwork cards, one for each currently released public domain character, and the challenge coin, which I probably don’t need, but are ideal for tournament play, as one side has “Leader”, “First”, “Position”, and “Mulligan”, while the other side has “Follower”, “Second”, “Map”, and “Keep” which when each player has a coin can be used for simultaneous reveals to keep or mulligan hands, or with one coin can do flips for random selections.
People in the FB group that I browse on pointed me to this website, that imports Asian (and other games). They are all trick takers except for Galaxy Cat Extension.
Schadenfreude
Galaxy Cat Extension - this I am very thrilled about
Take the ‘A’ Chord

This is a very dangerous store btw. I really do not recommend going there. In fact, I’ll post the link here so UK people know to avoid it: Travel-Games.co.uk
