Picked up Gambit and Rogue Hero packs for Marvel Champions, the former being my favorite of the X-Men and just overall a favorite comic character. Need to finish up the Sinister Motives campaign so I can give him a whirl.
Payed FLGS tax ![]()
But they are expensive. I had hoped to pick up the new Cathala āOrichalcumā (they generally have Pegasus games in stock and German edition just came out this week) but it was 25% more expensive than online⦠and I do get a 5% rebate from my customer card but 25% is ⦠too much difference.
I ended up with Viticulture World which my partner has repeatedly mentioned that I should get. The price difference here was more negligible.
Now to find time to play.
On a side note: except for the plastic wrap around the box, there was no plastic packaging. Even the cards only had a paper wrapper and the two baggies were made from that weird white stuff that is bio-degradable. This is either on Stonemaier or Feuerland maybe both⦠I approve
(Not that they care)
10 Minute Heist: The Wizardās Tower, sounded like fun
Iāve ordered Chinatown. SU&SDās play-through had me saying, āmehā; but No Rolls Barredās recent play-through had me saying, āHELL YEAHā! It is yet another example of my growing disconnect with SU&SD. ![]()
What was so different between the playthroughs? I could see player count being an issue, as I remember SU&SD only having three players, but I do feel the game works better with more.
Bought the latest Marvel Villainous expansion today. At this point, I feel like Iām collecting Villainous as much as Iām buying it because itās a good game that I want to play. The original Disney has flaws but I honestly do like it. Every change they made for Marvel made the game worse I think and there are characters from the base game and first Marvel expansion we still havenāt played. There are also characters from the Star Wars base game we still havenāt played. But I love Disney and Marvel and Star Wars, I love the idea of Villainous, and I really like the original Disney one so I keep buying all of them. I might have a problem.
All it boils down to is that their play-through was boring. Also, Iām Asian, and their perceived offenses on my behalf wereā¦basically offensive to me. I know the stereotypes, theyāre nothing. We are adults. We donāt need young Brits telling us how to feel. I was born in Seoul in 1971. I found their offense; OFFENSIVE.
Donāt get me wrong, I LIKE Quins. But I donāt like Matt. Thatās a given though. He rubs me raw.
I have it on good authority that my love of Swiss watches is a point of contention for him. Whatever: he can go screw.
A couple of gambles after the heavy success of Joan of Arc.
Got guardians of haversack and time of empires.
The first has more chance of being a win the latter has almost zero chance but everything about it smells like itās worth the gamble (a deepish game where doing your own thing and the mitigation of being rushed feels like thereās more chance it will work than any other civ game).
Wow. Chinatown was delivered at lunch time. Amazon is on their game (so to speak
).
Big fan of No Rolls Barred here. From watching all of Board Game Club and an admittedly very limited amount of SU&SD games, I get the vibe that the NRB gang are actual friends who happen to work together, rather than friendly coworkers.
But this is just from vibes I get, I could be way off base.
Yes. While I like most of SU&SDās people, they tend to be less personable than they used to be. At least in my view, anyway.
NRBās rundown of Chinatown is here. Itās refreshingly free of social commentary, and just talks about how the game plays. I like it.
I have a pretty massive order arriving tomorrow which has been growing for months and months waiting for Frosthaven so that I could get free shipping.

Frosthaven

Did you finish the expansion to your house to fit them all?
The last thing Adam Blampied wants is social commentary⦠The guy is shady ![]()
He lost his previous YouTube job at a Wrestling channel for sexual harassing fans. Then he jumped over to boardgames. Surprised he came back to YouTube at all tbh.
Iāll speculate that this is a case of ādamned if you do and damned if you donātā depending on who youāre talking with. Stereotypes in general tend to be a minefield. I couldnāt guess specifically how SUSD have arrived at their position, but I think theyāre doing their best to ādo the right thingā, and my impression is that they do make reasonable efforts to understand social issues. Those efforts will be influenced by the people they talk to, and while itās possible that none of those people are Asian, Iād honestly be a bit surprised if that was the case; so my guess is that they have talked with Asian people who view the stereotyping as problematic. Just a guess though, and I can certainly understand your reaction as well.
(Iāve also not watched that particular playthrough video, so I donāt know exactly what was said.)
Bought That Time You Killed Me. 2 player abstract game. Most likely wont be a keeper but keen to give it a few plays
Stereotypes are tricky, yeah, because so many of 'em come down to each individual.
For example, Maryse, my wife, is First Nations (Metis Nation of Maniwaki on her fatherās side). She never felt offended by the representation in Great Western Trail and was even surprised there was an uproar, but clearly there was, and thatās fair enough.
Although we did find it darkly ironic that their solution to the problem in the second edition was to remove all the First Nations representation from the game, replacing them with white bandits. In attempting to fix problematic representation, they went with NO representation. In this time, when a lot of VILE stuff (viler than we knew, even, and it was already horrendous) came out about the residential schools programme, this actually seems worse.
