Just bought the Rise of the Empire expansion for Star Wars: Rebellion because it was just under $20 on the Nerdz Day Deals in Friday. I was really hoping they would have a deal on the Outer Rim expansion, but they just had one on the base game, which I already own (and need to get to the table again).
Okay, okay, Iâm getting it now: Outer Rim is Firefly, and Rebellion is War of the Ring.
Itâs Rebellion that I absolutely want to try out asap, but Outer Rim sounds like a lot of fun. Games cafe job for that one, I think.
Living Forest, because it won some award somewhere
Yes. Except arguably Rebellion is significantly worse than War of the Ring, and Outer Rim is better than Firefly.
Heavy, heavy YMMV in that statement. But Firefly is big and long and complicated (and not bad! Not bad at all!) where Outer Rim is streamlined and elegant, and Rebellion⌠well, Rebellion is just a mess compared to War of the Ring, but itâs a beautiful mess. I played it twice (Rebellion) and I never need to play it again. Iâve played War of the Ring four times and I canât wait to try it again.
But the internet disagrees with me on both counts, I think. And I think I can get why, but the Rebellion thing in particular confuses me. Itâs just not as good in so, so many ways⌠but to each their own.
I love Firefly (the game) but I can see that it has a lot of mechanical problems. Outer Rim base fixed many of those and I think itâs fair to say is mechanically better, but it felt very sparse (as is standard for FFG base games); I am surprised both that they didnât have an expansion coming out straight away and that theyâve bothered to do one now.
Thereâs been a bunch of Star Wars TV shows and as far as I know they are introducing some more recent charactersâŚ
Sure, but not what I was thinking of: while there were lots of familiar names in the base game (from both original and newer SW content) there wasnât a lot to do, and after one play @Lordof1 and I felt weâd seen much of what was there. Thatâs the standard FFG model of course, at least as far back as X-Wing when I first met it, which is why I was so surprised they didnât have expansions ready to roll as soon as theyâd published it.
Oh gosh. So last week was Prime Day, Nerdz Day, and an ill-timed Modern Art restock. I need to post the damage (and the amazing prices).
Jaws of the Lion: $21 - This is a âmaybe one day? Why not?â thing. Straight to the attic until a rainy day.
Kingdomino: $15 - Literally opened the box a few days later and was like âwhat? I bought Kingdomino? When did I â OOOOOHHHH. OK.â Here it is. Itâll get played.
Modern Art: $23 - Played once 15 years ago. Didnât like it. People have been talking about it ever since. I think Iâm more comfortable with the vagaries of auctions now.
Brian Boru - Was hoping to get this for Nerdz day but they sold Inis instead. Picked it up. Not a special price.
Outer Rim: $34 - $34. Outer Rim was $34. This will get played as soon as my player base grows up. Attic for now with JotL.
Everdell: $36 - Iâd long decided not to get this but people on here keep liking it. Price was low enough to justify the trial.
Fantastic Factories: $22 - Iâd never heard about this one. Sounds like a light version of Roll for the Galaxy or a heavy version of Tiny Epic Galaxies. Will be easy to get to the table. Iâm thinking of it as a second round interview for a strong candidate
Praga Caput Regni: $39 - After the recent spate of Pulsar 2849 plays around here, Suchy is on my mind. Really I saw a Euro with area control and thought âWell, I canât afford Rococo, sooooooo.â Suchy doesnât seem to innovate but he does integrate well, and Iâm foreseeing a solid mid-heavy Euro. Itâs on Yucata if anyone wants to find out with me!
This brings the total collection to [redacted] so next weekâs project will be to find at least 15 games I can evaluate for culling.
Okay at those prices I might have done a lot of damage to my shelfspace, too. Teaches me to stay away from prime day
Nerdz Day is the killer. This is the second year and it already feels like a subcultural phenomenon. Prime day was good maybe 5 years ago but these days there are only one or two irresistible deals (for boardgames). JotL was one such this year.
In a completely and utterly unexpected turn of events, I finally preordered John Company 2 (DE)!
I purchased the Unfinished Business expansion for Star Wars: Outer Rim, and was barely able to fit everything in the original box (though I still have the insert in there).
So this arrived, hogged the table and I played 2 rounds to learn the game and I must say this is the first game I acquired in a while where I can see the potential for a variety of player counts and it hitting the table. I am quite excited to have this so many recent acquisitions were in the âmeh territoryâ or in the ânobody is going to play this with meâ category. Also: itâs Quacks with Area Majority. Canât wait to get this to the actual table.
Finally!
=====================
I bought Portobello Market after playing more of it. And I trade for a copy of Wildcatters. Both are about shared incentives and all that.
My FLGS was having a bit of a garage sale, so, at my darling wifeâs insistence, I went while she rested (the radiation treatments have started and sheâs a bit tired) under her parentsâ care.
Was expecting used games, but they were all new at near 50% discount. Came back with Aquatica and Cryo. They looked interesting and they were cheap enough that I didnât mind the risk.
Made it into central London, looked in Forbidden Planet and Orcâs Nest. Came away with Marvel Champions: Sinister Motives box and the Venom hero, as theyâre both meant to be some of the more powerful in the game at the moment. (Also one for the âanticipatedâ thread: thereâs an X-Men box and heroes on the way next).
Whatâs that chanting I hear, coming from this forum?
âOne of us. One of us.â
Looking forward to giving Spirit Island a go soon, although might not be for a couple of weeks due to other commitments.
Finally pulled the trigger on Root
Last week, I saw a BGG user posting some games for sale on the Kansas City Flea Market geeklist. Of note was Railways of the World: 10th Anniversary Edition, listed for an okay price, but not low enough for me to be enthusiastic. I GeekMailed the user and offered a lower price (the listing said âOBOâ); he told me that if he didnât get any other offers in the next couple of days, it could be mine.
Well, sure enough, I met up with the user yesterday and got RotW:10thAE for a reasonable (not great, but not bad) price. It seems to be missing a couple of train pieces, but nothing that really impacts me.
After completing our transaction, the seller asked me what kinds of games I like to play. We got to talking about our tastes and he offers an invitation to some game nights that he and some of his friends host nearby. He also mentions Dads on a Map and says one of the regulars he plays with is one of the founding Dads of DoaM who lives in the area.
So a new game, yes, but also a new lead on some in-person gaming with a group that values, specifically, SICS-style games, including 18xx. Iâm very exite!
And because I am weak, I did purchase the used copy of Men at Work from my FLGS. But thatâs it! I am going to stop perusing their list of used games online for a bit so I donât get tempted by something else anytime soon.
