John Company PBF

Sorry, just realized that the Chairman has performed their family action, so it’s my turn.

I, too, will enlist a Writer, this one in Madras.

Cool. So the family phase is done? That was a lot more simple than I thought it would be

I don’t think @Whistle_Pig has done an action yet.

I’ll seek a share.

OK, normally when seeking a share the player needs to specify how much they pay, but in this case it was redundant: the cheapest 2 pound spot was open, and no-one else was on the stock exchange track, so at the end of the family phase the family marker moved all the way to the right. They did not convert into a share, because there is currently no company debt.

We skip Firms, because no deregulation in this scenario.

We skip Hiring, because there are no empty positions.

Over to @lalunaverde for Chairman actions. To recap for new players, this is where the Chairman:

  1. May increase debt. +1 debt = +5 company balance. An increase of more than 3 debt requires a majority vote by the court of directors. So in the current situation, the approval of at least one other player would be needed.

  2. Must distribute all company balance to office treasuries.

Can we have the dice roll odds table that the player placards come with?

EDIT: any way we can see the values of the closed locations for Trade Director’s information?

@lalunaverde you can refer to the tiny values to the right of the order to see the value halved and rounded down, or refer to this:

Okay, could I get something clarified regarding Director of Trade?

If I do the Special Envoy action and open one order, can that be anywhere on the India map that is available? Or does it need a path back to a port and an associated ship? How is that paid for, from company funds, or do I have the 3 pounds shown above the DoT space? Or does it get paid by my family funds?

THEN, I can transfer two pieces, either ships or writers. Can I move ships from shipyards to any ocean space?

DoT announces the action, makes the roll based on money spent from the DoT treasury, currently 3, then on success chooses anywhere on the map to open (in a region NOT controlled by the company), or starts trade with China (which is only useful when you have control of regions and an opium supply going).

In general, company funds are distinct and thematically on a different scale to family money, and treasuries are also entirely separate from each other.

Transfer 2 pieces is pieces already on the map. Ships in shipyards need to be fitted by the Manager of Shipping first (at 3 pounds a ship).

So there are currently 5 in company funds (red counter at the bottom) which can be increased by adding debt.

Which can then be allocated to the boxes for roles. Which at this early stage is probably best getting new ships on the board?

I would love to commission some ships this round to facilitate our trade missions, so I’m hoping the chairperson can spread some wealth to my department.

Maybe some coins to the director of trade to open the new routes or China?

That seems the be the main agenda.

Quick recap: we have a ship on each sea region. If the Director of Trade could move the South ship to either East or West, then we would need 3 more ships. We can build 2 blue ships from @RossM and @GeeBizzle for £3 each. And hire a temporary ship

That’s a total of £8 = £3 + £3 + £2

I intend to give the Manager of Shipping £5 to bolster their budget.

The Director of Trade (their final decision, ofc) can open up the one in Punjab or Hyderabad as those are £7 trade spots we can. Maybe open one via Trade Director and then we can open up the market in the other one the old fashion way (with bayonets) - both have strength of 1. Punjab itself has 1 strength but it is part of an empire, so the strength 1 in Delhi is included. I believe that their current budget of £3 is adequate in achieving our goals.

As for the financing required for the trade missions themselves: both Presidencies have a budget of £3. Recap that we get a die roll for each £££ we spend, minus 1 die for every regional border we cross. It is paramount that we succeed on both fronts, so each Presidents will be award £4 (their budget now a total of £7) so they can roll 6 dice. A 20% failure with 5 dice seems too dangerous. My cousin - the President of Bombay - is fine with the amount given. I hope this is a fine arrangement for the President of Bengal @COMaestro

This puts our total expense to £13. Therefore, we shall take 2 loans. The extra £2 will be given to the humble President of Bombay for… other things. :innocent:

In summary:

Income

  • Company Treasury: £5
  • 2 Loans: £10
  • Total: £15

Expenses

  • £5 to the Manager of Shipping
  • £6 to the President of Bombay
  • £4 to the President of Bengal
  • Total: £15

Any questions? No questions. Good. This meeting is ajourned

I’m assuming you’ve got a gavel

Again, no cause for alarm, but the families now have a table.

I will note that there’s one error in lalunaverde’s analysis: the empire to which Punjab belongs currently also includes Maratha, so total strength 3.

Oh, also, the 20% failure rate is for 4 dice, not 5. To recap failure rates in this range:
3 dice: 30%
4 dice: 20%
5 dice: 13%
6 dice: 9%

Over to @COMaestro for directing trade. Please use the Discourse dice roller to get any dice results.

Not sure if this is recorded elsewhere, but @Whistle_Pig 's share would have kicked in, no? Which also reduces our debt by one.

Company shares takes place at the end of the Family phase, as I covered here John Company PBF - #45 by Benkyo

So that debt reduction will occur next round, not now.

@COMaestro asked for a die roll:
Okay, start with rolling for Special Envoy, spending all 3 pounds.

3d6: 3 + 6 + 4 = 13

No successes, so no new trading spots open.

Then transfer the Constant Friend to the E sea zone. Then, in hindsight, I feel my cousin would be better placed in Bombay rather than Madras, so transfer them as well.

End Director of Trade phase.

Over to @GeeBizzle for shipping management.

(Just in case: COMaestro you wrote “no successes, so no new trading spots open”, plural in both cases. This isn’t a game where each success nets you a thing: you only get the best result, once. If you have cash left over after a roll, the result wasn’t a catastrophic failure, and the office allows it, you can spend again for another roll.)
