Back in March, basically after the first thaws, I started running again. I usually stop over the winter (around November, or when the snow starts to actually stick around) and restart in the summer. I did a 9 week “Couch-to-5K”, and since then I have been running between 2 and 3km every morning. And I feel…
… awful. Exhausted, sore, and wondering why I bother getting out of bed that extra 45 minutes early. Some days, like today, I don’t even have time to shower before I head to work… wouldn’t a nice, hot shower be a better way to start my day? But at least the weight loss has been… non-existent.
ARGH. Argh argh argh.
It’s fine. First world problems. Too many sweets and comfort foods. But lordy do I hate running. I just hate it less than swimming or dying early from heart disease.
I sent Roger something, so if I am mysteriously slain, you all know who did it.
Work remains very busy but I seem to be coping for now. We have started scouting around for a house to buy, which is intimidating. Trying to guess where we will be physically working in future, and how that affects where we should try to live… since we don’t drive, routes are important. Naturally all the public transport goes straight into the city centre, so getting from one quadrant to another is not an easy thing.
Funny you should say that, I just came back from doing errands with a pair of running shoes because I need some sport that gets me outside and cycling isn‘t sport but transport. So where do I find that Couch 2 5K plan that sounds just like me
You just reminded me of the kiwi athlete (sorry I cannot remember his name) that was interviewed this year after his run in the final of the 1500 m for the fifth consecutive Olympics (I believe he was bronze in Rio). When asked if he had a message for people back at NZ he answered: “Don’t do it guys, I feel awful. I’m knackered”
I used an Android app that’s pretty good: “Just Run: Zero to 5K (and more!)”. Lets you listen to podcasts or your own music, and you can link it to GPS but I don’t bother and just do it by time. Minimalist, but quite good.
Yesterday I went to the actual, physical office. We’re being “encouraged” to go back in a couple of days a week, which I expect will shortly become “required”.
We’re still doing distancing, masks, and many open windows, and everyone is being asked to get tested before they come in, so there is still a moderate level of caution.
It was pretty quiet, and I think I got more done than I would have at home. Probably not an extra two hours’ worth of work though, which is how long I spent commuting…
I’ve been away from the thread for a bit, as I had to be fully in Job Mode this week. In short: I hope everybody is getting the help they can use for their own challenges, and I celebrate all your successes!
I will through my support behind any Couch or Zero to 5K tool for folks looking for an exercise structure. I’ve used a couple different systems, both podcast-based, and they were the first things that ever really worked to get me past only being able to jog short distances before needing to bend over and almost puke. I’ve not made it to 5K yet, but I can at least run far enough before getting winded that strangers don’t stop to ask if I’m okay.
Our school’s dealing with record enrollment, so my usual classes of 30-40 have ticket up to 35-45 each period, and one of our campus buildings is being renovated, so every room is being used every class period, which means passing periods are insanely crowded. There aren’t many masks in the classroom, but most students are masking up for the hallways and cafeteria, which is better than I expected. I’m self-isolating as much as possible for the next several weeks when not in the classroom, until we get some data about how back-to-school has changed local positive test rates.
Student spirits are high, and I think I’ve been able to foster enough engagement in this first week that, if we go fully online, I’ll at least have decent buy-in from the students.
I’m struggling to concentrate, which is frustrating - the weekend is when I want to focus to write things, stay in touch with people, and so on. Even writing emails is hard work right now, possibly because I do that all week anyway I was just thinking of settling down to try scenario writing when I found a nasty letter from the gas company. Sigh.
But I’ve mustered the energy to do some more unpacking and made the bedroom that bit more liveable, which is nice.
Had some friends over for barbecue and light games, which turned into just barbecue (and beer). Normally I host 4-8 of these a year; this was the first one since late 2019. Feeling good that this is still a thing that can happen.
My takeaway: vaccine now shares name with badly-written sci-fi villain (I assume, I haven’t bothered to actually check if a character named that exists or not)
