Actual things you actually said (or heard) in the last 24 hours

Honestly, Royal Doulton’s no fun anymore.

Well that’s obvious. Anyone with class takes it outside

This was the Shakespeare’s Globe shop, but it’s a surprisingly common problem.

Yeah, me and my brother in law nearly got thrown out of a shop in Carcassone - and we hadn’t even really started!

“Also, where did that city wall come from?”

Wife: “That noise you make is just adorable.”
Me: “What noise?”
Wife: “That noise you make to the cats.”(1)
Me: “I wasn’t talking to the cats.”
Wife: “Well then that’s just weird.”

(1) Earlier in the day, she commented on the noises I made when petting/scratching the cats.
(2) The noise I was making was related to me getting up slowly from my desk chair due to pain in my coccyx

My takeaway is that your wife enjoys the sound of you being in pain.

Me to cat as she sniffs my hand: “That is the smell of JavaScript. Have nothing to do with it.”

“I couldn’t hear you, I was reading.”

This actually brings up an interesting neurological point. Are they one of those people (like me) who read by essentially sounding out all the words in their head and are essentially reading aloud to themselves, but silently? Or are they one of those people who don’t do that? I can totally believe someone not hearing someone else speaking because they were reading.

I recently read (read: skimmed) an article about people with an internal monologue but without sound. That’s me. I also have aphantasia, which is probably linked.

I never knew people actually heard voices, music, sounds, etc.

I definitely have an internal monlogue with sound (much like how I read). I’ve heard of people who no internal monlogue which I assume does not mean they have one but with no sound.

I put it as “I only have one language processor.” I can’t pay attention to two streams of language at the same time. I read by instant-recognition, and I’m very bad at phonetics. I have internal monologue, some of the time, but it doesn’t have virtual sound.

I have aphantasia, and I read by recognition. Consequently I read quickly but sometimes slip into skip-reading, then I slow down if I can and try to read aloud in my head but I often slip back.

Weirdly, despite struggling very much to bring any sort of image to mind, I can definitely ‘hear’ voices and songs as if they were external.

I wonder if this is a genetic thing, or to do with how and when the brain develops? Of my two kids, one reads by recognition and the other reads phonetically. Each method seems to work well for them, but it’s frustrating when phonics is pushed at school as ‘the’ way to learn to read.

I have an ex with synaesthesia who can follow four conversations at once while reading, no problem. (However, a noisy bus going past on her left makes her blind on that side).

My partner has ADHD and literally can’t listen to two conversations at the same time, she shuts down.

I have no idea how I read!
I just read.

This is why noisy pubs, cafés, etc. are The Worst

I have ADHD and 4 children. I am basically non-functional most evenings after work when everyone is talking at the same time.

I reckon that every ADHD diagnosis should come with a free pair of noise cancelling headphones

Agreed. I need something to deal with my ASD + ADHD children! :stuck_out_tongue:
