Your Last Played Game Volume 3

I also forgot that I played Innovation.

It was fun, does anyone know if there any plans to release the expansions beyond the Ultimate Box?

It’s 2.5 the price of 4th edition base box.

I’m not aware of such news. Best to ask Chris Cieslik or Carl Chudyk themselves.

Twilight Imperium 4th Edition with Prophecy of Kings and Thunder’s Edge

Played on Saturday, started around 11am, ended around 5. Players were Mentak (me), L1Z1X (Eric), Titans of Ul (Terry), and Sardak Norr (Ben). The Sardak are much better now… 2 carriers and 5 infantry as a start is a big deal.

Oh, and the Galactic Event put neutral infantry on all Hazard worlds equal to their resource value, and you got a free research when conquering one for the first time! Again, big help for the bugs.

Game ended on Turn 4 (before the first Stage 2 objective was flipped). Sardak managed to hold their homeworld against a determined L1Z1X invasion (flagship plus 4 dreadnaughts, Sardak just had enough Fighters to push through the space combat win). I did very poorly overall, finishing last by a wide margin (Sardak 10, L1Z1X 8, Titans 7, Mentak 4).

Still a lovely game, really enjoy it, but man I do not have the brain for TI4 strategy any more, if I ever did…

We then played a quick couple rounds of The Gang, which was great.

Finally broke out Ethnos 2nd Ed, which I’d boight soeifically for our 3-player game sessions, over the weekend. Let me tell you, learning a game, translating a rulebook so I can teach it and teaching it all at the same time (it was an impromptu session, if I’d known he was coming earlier I would’ve learned the bloody thing beforehand) is a challenge and a half. Things got WAY better when our friend got his over-excited dog back in the truck for the teach (his dog is always mega-excited to see ours, but that time was something else). So we played two games, with the recommended clans: Red pandas, tigers, foxes, bears and ravens.

And it’s good! We all had fun! The biggest issue was learning the iconography, especially for Yvan, who’s gaming level is pretty far below ours. We made him a quick player aide (his English is lacking as well) and it helped a ton, but what’ll help the most is reps. Fortunately, he’s keen to try again! We all are! I think I may have grokked the game more quickly than both Yvan and Maryse, as I won both games by a sizeable margin. Maryse came second in the first one, Yvan in the second.

So now we have an alternative to TTR R&S, which isn’t a bad thing. We then played our traditional 3 games, where balance was restored and I was soundly beaten (all right, so I came in second all three times).

I briefly read that as Twilight Imperium 4th Edition with Prophecy of Kings and Thunder Road, which seemed like some very audacious house-ruling.

Quest for El Dorado - Dominion is still my fave but this is very good light weight fun

No Loose Ends - again. What an awesome trick taker from Taiki Shinzawa. Anything Shinzawa is worth playing.

HOOOOOOOT STREEEEEAAAAK!

Seasons + two expansions - ran away with it with my Necrotic Kris where I kept sacrificing my familiars to get FOUR energy tokens which pretty much powers my engine. I have the 20 pts statue as well which I played twice. Yeah. Ran away with it.

Fields of Arle + Tea & Trade - 3 players and it’s awesome!

Puerto Banana - 6 players! My last bid of the game was 1696. And it lost! Our inflation was even faster.

Did a solo play of my new copy of Castle Panic. Since there is no one to trade with and you just have a hand of six cards, the odds really are against you, even with the ability to discard and draw up to two cards a turn instead of the usual one.

Things started out okay, but then boulders started rolling and damaging my walls, monsters were moving out of turn and one finally breached the walls to take out a tower. Luckily I drew the Barbarian right about then and was able to take it out before it could do too much damage.

I got down to about 7 tokens left in the pile, but had a Troll in the castle area taking out a tower every turn and no cards in hand to take it out. One of the last tokens I drew was the “Draw 4 tokens” one, which moved monsters clockwise, letting the Troll take out my last tower.

Fun game, easy to play, but still a bit of challenge, at least in solo and probably with two. Hope to try it out with friends and family before too long.

Someone I slightly know on BGA invited me to play Formula D and I find I’m rather enjoying it.

I was mostly role-playing when it came out, got hugely popular, and gradually faded away. I can see all sorts of problems, starting with the player elimination. But significant parts of those problems go away on BGA (player elimination isn’t a problem in an async game, and whether the thing that tells you what spaces you can move to and how many of which car wear point it costs is accurate or not it at least it gives you a quick and unarguable answer). It’s not going to displace Rallyman: GT from my affections but it’s definitely being fun.

Sounds like we need to setup a Tekelili game of it right now…

Indonesia - I’m on fire with this game of producing rice, spice, and everything nice, like fast take-away food called Siap Saji.

4 players and it was amazing as usual. I’m having a good run of getting my new 3e copy played.

Fresh Fish - only the freshest of fish! My number 1 game ever apparently. 5 players and it was brain-bursting and full of mean moves and full of sharp turnarounds.

Hansa Teutonica - player 2 and I tied and so the tie breaker is the player who has less action upgrades. I had 3 actions throughout the game and the rest for 4 or 5 actions. I won through pure efficiency!

Automania - a rather unknown game. It was nice. Light weight Euro but doens’t demand that much from me so it was hard to dislike.

Seasons - so good that I played it twice. Also contains the two expansions

Azul (4p) x2, tonight. I’ve never played any of the sequels, but I’ve never regretted purchasing the original in preference to one of the later variants. A lovely game which is easy to play with just about anyone.

Hot Streak has also been doing a lot of heavy lifting for me in recent times.

And Cluedo, as it’s a family staple.

Another weekend and another game completed, this Saturday night getting through a solo game of Imperium: Classics pitting the Persians against the Roman bot. I’ve played this solo once or twice before and still don’t find the terminology intuitive, although I was getting more of a handle on the game play as the game progressed. Nothing too tricky given the probably of confusion, so stuck with the very easy difficulty, simple factions and simple objectives, but there was much crossreferencing of rulebooks and erratas to clarifying things and I’m sure I missed a couple of rules as well. Both empires seemed to advance at about the same pace, but the Persians completed their development a card or two earlier than the romans, and I had enough tributary forces to complete what seemed like a comfortable victory by 98 points to 80, even though it looked like they had more history cards stored up than I had. A late game turn where I returned four unrest cards at once really helped.

I enjoyed it but would need to play it more often before I felt comfortable with it, at least enough to keep it in the collection. I do love the theme but it does seem overly confusing and takes too long to set up and pack away to be a game I’d take off the shelves regularly, and that confusion and rereading of rules meant the game seemed to take well over 3 hours to complete. I don’t have many deckbuilders in my collection; I prefer Star Realms: Frontiers and The Quest for El Dorado for their speed and simplicity and, although it has much more than just deckbuilding, Great Western Trail is a more enjoyable experience. I still own Legendary Marvel but don’t see myself playing that again and could well move that on.

Are you using the Imperium: Horizons rulebook? If not, snag it off BGG and use it; it does a much better job of explaining the game than the original ones.

Some more Harmonies on Friday, and after thinking I’d probably struggle to get close to my last score I actually beat it by 2 points!
The game is still great and very approachable for new players now that I have a reasonably streamlined teach. Looking forward to the expansion!
