Gods, that soundtrack. The atmosphere!
… the complete unwillingness to contort through a game where you can’t save during a run.
“Whoops, I missed that jump and have teleported to the edge of the solar system” is funny once. Not five times.

Yup, too often have I fell into that damn black hole, or just forgotten to put on my space suit as I’m racing to a planet that resembles a sand timer.
I find the movement super frustrating in that game. Gosh I want to love it, it’s clearly an incredibly well designed game with hidden depths and a fantastic story, but just getting from one place to another is so annoying that I have bounced off it three times now.
If anyone was intrigued by Rift Wizard, but put off by the need to optimise every level by using as few resources as possible… well, Rift Wizard 2 is more of the same, except you get all your health and spell casts back every level, so you can go all-out, every time. It also features huge enemies, like this one, and an array of staves, robes, pets, etc., to make every run feel very different. Good stuff.
Picked up a cheap copy of RE4 remake. It’s really well done, got enough new content and quality of life improvements without ruining my nostalgia for the game.
I just discovered I own Alpha Centauri on GOG.com.
Anyone else playing Blue Prince?
Not being exactly au courant in such matters, at the moment I’m enjoying Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 which is a few years old. Got it in a bundle with other Lego downloads. Charming, silly, ultimately pointless, but quite entertaining and ideal for those times when thinking is getting a bit much.
A lot of my friends are playing it and shower praise upon it. It’s on my wishlist, so I’ve been steadfastly avoiding any spoilers.
Speaking of… legacy gaming: I discovered some free game offers via my Amazon subscription (I should check that site more often).
I am currently playing Mafia III. A game that I think I played a demo of almost 10 years ago and put it on my Steam wishlist… and then failed to ever buy it even when it was, drastically, discounted over the years.
Fun. I don’t care for over-the-shoulder shooters that much, and the Steam controller touchpad-joystick makes aiming pretty terrible… but at least I can switch to keyboard+mouse for those parts.
Absolutely loved that game. One of the very few where I’ve done everything (got all the achievements, etc). Some great writing and voice performances, especially Peter Serafinowicz as Kang.
You can search for Blue Prince in this discussion. I think about four of us have talked about it.
My own contribution started here.
Picked up expedition 33, the story is really intriguing and the gameplay loop is good but I may just not be good at these games as I’m getting trounced very frequently.
I gave up on it without ever reaching the atrium or whatever the room was called. i did about 40ish runs before deciding it was not for me. I’m far too impatient for a puzzle that forces you to go slow.
that said there seems to be a lot more to discover than what i managed to do. I can appreciate the game… even though it’s not for me.
I made it to the final room and enjoyed the puzzle solving to get there. There was a lot more to it but I didn’t feel the need to carry on, at that point my slight niggles with it outweighed the need to continue.
Finished the main storyline for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle this morning. What a ride!
Really enjoyed the game, and intend to keep playing to try to get all the collectibles and such, because it’s just fun going around and punching out Nazis and trying to figure out puzzles.
In much the same way that Baldur’s Gate 3 bosses don’t like 18 undead minions all up in their face, I’ve been playing Total War: Warhammer 3 as Helman Ghorst, who gives buffs to zombies. Usually the very worst unit in the game, with all these buffs on them it turns out the thing that giant advanced Empire armies don’t like is “700 regenerating zombies”.
I found a new survivor style game on the Steam Sale. net.attack()
Mostly it fits right in with a talk I am giving next week about “making programming fun”
Right, expedition 33, so I turned down the difficulty a level and the combat is now ridiculously trivial (hits have went from 30 damage to 5 without similarly scaling up your attack to speed things up). Damn it. Without being stuck in a “get good” cycle I think my inability to parry (which seems to be essential to winning) is going to ruin this game.
I can see it’s a good game but losing nearly every combat first time while you memorise attack rhythms, practice said rhythms and trial and error different strategies just means that I can see myself doing this. Conversely with combat making up so much of the game and each fight lasting 5-10 mins I see no fun in just going through the motions of menu selection.
Kinda annoyed mostly as the world building and mystery is really good.
I wondered about that combat aspect myself.
Though I would like to get gamepass for some months to play it which makes it okay if I dislike the game.
