Wot are you playing (video games)

Been playing Guardians of the Galaxy on the PS5. The gameplay is not going to be winning any awards, as it is pretty generic. Walk around a bit, exploring side passages for components used for upgrades or collectables, then combat ensures in certain areas. There is some tactical component to the combats, as you unlock elemental attacks with your guns, which certain enemies are weak against, and the other Guardians have abilities that you can use to your advantage, but for the most part, it’s just run around and shoot until everything is dead. No cover system, just dodging, including some quick-time events for avoiding some melee attacks.

What the game is great at, however, it evoking the feeling of the characters. There is constant commentary and conversation between the characters that feels natural. Drax’s rude straightforwardness and literalness, Rocket’s flippancy and lack of respect for all, Gamora’s no-nonsense attitude, Groot’s “I am Groot”-ness, and Star-lord’s somewhat childishness but constant efforts at keeping the team together all shine through as you walk around the levels. The game just puts a smile on your face constantly as you listen to the team bicker and tease and complain in such a steady flow that feels completely organic.

The story is quite good as well, and I find myself looking forward to playing the game just to continue to see how it unfolds and to spend more time with this outfit of misfit miscreants.

So my brain thought “wait what is an undo buffoon?”

I just start the round over… worst one is when I have done it all right but between choosing my cards and executing the turn something interrupts and I come back and forgot which card was the top and which the bottom plan and boom turn falls apart. But reloading takes a while and sometimes…

Then I might have been playing it wrong in the board game too… one more for the list of rules I did wrong in Gloomhaven.

There are two kinds. One are blueprints and have to be bought and one are the items themselves.

I don’t expect anyone to really understand what this means, but it’s a server-wide record, I think I’ve cracked Brogue, and I’m super-happy about that:

(I still don’t have a mastery ascension to my name though, will have to work on that!)

Finally told myself to buy a Switch Lite and got Animal Crossing and Breath of the Wild. I’'ll be getting Fire Emblem next. Which one? I don’t know. I’ll probs just go for chronological order. Though I still need to finish some of the old FE titles from Gameboy Advance.

I have breath of the wild and I’m jealous of the experience of getting to play that game fresh. After suitable time passing I think it’s safe to say it’s my favourite of all time.

Oh and you get to start playing in winter. The island is most beautiful in winter  I don‘t have my switch here… when I am back if you need any help—like finding other types of fruit trees than apples

Also have fun with Zelda. BotW is one of the best games I‘ve ever played.

Just to ease my trainzz withdrawal (this is a serious illness. Thousands of people suffer from trainzz withdrawals every year), I re-install OpenTTD (open sourced Transport Tycoon Deluxe). It is also a way to chill for me. Except during that time where there’s a congestion because one of my trains can’t go back to its station because somehow I screwed up the signals.

Finally tackling Skyrim in earnest, and quite enjoying it so far (Level 14). The new 10-year anniversary edition on Steam has a Survival mod that provides most of the making-life-harder-for-myself that I wanted for immersiveness. Much easier than the 3 weeks of researching mods that I inflicted on myself last year when I started down this road.

I am currently bemused by the way that Link can now swim effortlessly up waterfalls, and corkscrew so fast that he obliterates anything in front of him in the water, and yet cannot dive and will drown if he swims more than a few hundred metres horizontally (unless he eats a hearty meal along the way).

Still, Zelda: BotW is proving entertaining so far. Bought for my daughter because I had the vague idea it would be another JRPG that she would enjoy, but it’s way too intimidating for her. She keeps demanding that I play it though, so she can watch.

Not if you wear your climbing gear to jump up the cliffs instead

I hear that from my my Switch owning friends with kids as well, the kids don’t get to play but love to watch.

Horizon Forbidden West is finally out! Woo hoo!
I finished the quite lengthy intro last night and will tackling the main story today.
I can’t wait to be able to override the big machines and ride around like a kid with a giant robotic monster pet. Simple pleasures.

What are you playing it on? I’ve got a PS4 Pro, and I’m trying to decide whether to get it now or wait.

PS Pro and it looks absolutely gorgeous, so you have no worries there.
Barring one cutscene that had a second of environmental glitch, absolutely no other noticeable problems.

No frame rate drops either, although I haven’t been in any large scale conflict as yet.

I highly recommend it.
