Wot are you playing (video games)

So my Angband adventures consider - my recently deceased Gnome Rogue managed to take out the Balrog of Moria before he went so that’s at least half a win in my book :stuck_out_tongue: Now I’m playing around with a High-elf Ranger.

I also picked up Undermine recently and it’s decent. I’m not sure how well it measures up to the best of its class like Binding of Isaac or Enter the Gungeon but I’m having fun. It’s super hard though, so far I’ve only made it to the second area. It’s probably in part a consequence of never remembering I can jump to avoid things…

I’ve also been eyeing off Disco Elysium, which is on sale on Steam at the moment. It looks right up my alley but I’m pretty tight when buying video games these days - I mean I could just try and actually get through the games I already own and haven’t given a fair shake to, afterall…

That’s a very powerful combo! (For any newbies reading: don’t be afraid to lean into archery with Rangers, it’s super effective).

I’ve been keeping my finger on the pulse of hidden gems, playing this brand new game called "Hades". I think it might grow quite a following once it’s available on more than just the PlayStation. Keep an eye out.

Always ahead of the curve, I see. :slightly_smiling_face:

It is available on Steam too

I’ve also jumped in to Hades. Pleased to get in on release day for a game that I can tell is going to be big

Prior to that I completed Control. The gameplay was very satisfying, everything felt that it had weight and the way the environment reacted to being shot/smashed/ripped apart by telekinetic abilities was really impressive. However, while I found the setting compelling I thought the story was unremarkable and the characters uninteresting. The voice acting (or possibly voice direction) was so bad it noticeably detracted from my enjoyment of the game.

Alongside trying to escape from hell, I’m also currently playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider. So far it feels like a step up from the previous two games, particularly with regards to the quality of the puzzle design and vibrancy of the world.

Been playing quite a lot the app for Oceans on my phone lately. Still on development, but the full range is very cheap (1.49NZD), and I have enjoyed it multiple times this week, still a challenge. I think more of the deep cards are on the way to the app, so we’ll see how that goes.

Thumper :beetle:
I played through Thumper in VR and beat it for the first time. Absolutely love the game, every year or so I go through a Thumper phase but this is the first time I finished. I found it easier either because of the high framerate in VR or the depth perception helping me judge the beats. It’s also a wild experience in VR that kept me smiling right up until the end. Definitely a must-try if you’ve got a VR headset, and still a high recommendation if not.

I’ve also been playing Pokemon Unite since it came out which is great because its matches are so short. As with all MOBA-style games it can be very frustrating playing with random people but the swingy end game is very exciting. If it didn’t have such heavy, gross monetisation then I’d be much more keen to recommend. As it is, it’s a fun time but the business model puts me off recommending it.

Well in Angband news I lost my ranger to an ethereal dragon on like DL50 (I’d been taking down ancients with too little effort and underestimated it :frowning:) It’s pretty close to as far as I’ve gotten though, so that takes a bit of the sting out of it

Now I’m tossing up between a few options for my next char - any suggestions?

I’m also thinking I should get around to trying my copy of Control that I nabbed free from Epic awhile ago. I’ve heard its decent (here among other places).

I had a lot of fun with Control, but it has issues. But the combat is slick.

The story is… rough. And there are a few puzzles that make absolutely no sense. And it’s impossible to finish it… and the main story is very obviously just a “part 1” sorta deal, although somewhat satisfying in the conclusion.

But I enjoyed it for the most part. It’s ambitious, at the very least. Sort of a halfway point between, say, Portal 2 and Gears of War.

Got my first win on Hades on my 17th attempt.

At first the sheer ridiculous scale of the meta-progression revealed to you really put me off, so it was a relief to learn it’s mostly post-game rather than essential grind. Titan’s blood, diamonds, ambrosia… you don’t need any of it.

Nice game, first reflex twitchy game I’ve enjoyed in ages.

And I’m still interested in finding out what the post-game story is.

So, Microsoft and all large corporations are evil and a contributing to the destruction of the planet and erosion of our privacy. Agreed.

On the other hand, they just offered to upgrade my already existing XBox Gold subscription to Games Pass Ultimate for… £1. That means for the next 10 months I have access to every one of the games the Games Pass list for 10p/month. After that I’ll probs cancel my subscription but I’m now in the position of having a lot of very good games to play and no exam to revise for, all of which also work on my PC.

And I thought I was going to get back to writing…

Weirdly, the game that has sucked me in most is The Bard’s Tale (the original version), probably me reaching for familiar comfort with the overwhelming number of games I now have… but I’ve played a little (and plan to play more) of: Hades, Sea of Thieves, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Monster Train, Planet Coaster, Humankind, Slime Rancher, Pillars of Eternity II, Dead Cells, 12 Minutes, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango and Full Throttle (loved these so much back in the day), Desperadoes III, Gears Tactics, No Man’s Sky - there are lots of other great games that I’ve already own and love (I.e. Dishonoured, Stellaris, Fallout, Frostpunk, Elder Scrolls etc).

So, all in all, my best value gaming day ever. Even if I’m almost exclusively playing a 40-year old game right now. Shush. I just need to break it to my gaming group that my prep for GMing might be slower than expected…

Birth of the Federation.

The micro prose game about the first steps of colonising the galaxy, that only has the next generation licence. :man_facepalming:

Just finished FF7 remake and enjoyed it quite a bit. The last bit was a bit spacy and kingdom hearts-esque but I’m kind of into that.

Haven’t finished this yet. I am enjoying the story, but the gameplay is just not very fun for me.
