Flight sticks and throttle controls are great for detailed flight sims, but for more “arcadey” stuff, I think the original controllers are better. One of the reasons I put my stuff away was that using them made Ace Combat 7 a bit more difficult for me, not less.
I just bought Möbius Front '83, which is a tactical, turn-based wargame from… Zachtronics. Hoping to take it for a good spin this evening. The game pitches “cutting edge 80’s wartech” so given the developer’s pedigree, I’m hoping they leaned hard into that.
Ooh! I really should (and shouldn’t) be on a newsletter to get informed when new Zachtronic games drop. I’ll be eager to hear what you think.
I saw Sentinels of the Multiverse quite cheap on Steam, so I bought it. Still playing quite a lot of Root, I am loving the different challenges.
After my friend started playing, I started a new game of BotW. It has been one and a half years since I played… and I think it is a perfect moment to start again. It’s even better than the first time. I remember flailing my way through the first chapter or so… this time I even found the cooking tutorial. I love this game. Just finished the plateau and had to force myself to stop… or I would be playing until I fell asleep.
Ps i did not grow up on zelda, my first nintendo console was the wii and i never touched Zelda on that one.
BOTW is one of my favourite game experiences. I’m kinda scared to go back to it incase I don’t enjoy it as much.
Love all the little secret stuff hidden. Almost everywhere you go you’re rewarded for your effort.
I climbed a mountain filled with rubbish only to find a person cooking and making bad recipes. Something about that completely pointless yet fun tidbit stuck with me more than the main story beats
I admit I had to google what was BOTW… me and Nintendo
So, I bought a game pad for my PC!
Like it’s the 90s.
Any suggestions for game pad games?
Late to the party but… Hades is a treat!
Dark Souls is the reason I bought a controller. Played it to completion, it was great, haven’t used the controller since.
Witcher III??
Can I entice you to get into fighting games??
Tekken 7 is great…
Otherwise, as @Benkyo mentioned, Dark Souls is amazing. Somehow I’ve put in more hours to Dark Souls III than any other game… They are unbelievably frustrating at first, but then become just… too epic.
Can confirm that just about ANY of the Street Fighter games (don’t pay too much money) are a treat on gamepad and PC.
I really recommend, Hyper Light Drifter, Hollow Knight, and Hades.
All of those games begin with H. Which is odd.
Ah sorry, Breath of the Wild for anyone who still hasn’t figured out I am back to playing Zelda on my Switch. That game alone made it worth buying the console.
I can’t believe how much I remember from my first playthrough in late 2018.
I know that muscle memory tends to remember controls for games basically forever (I can put my hands down on the keyboard or keypad and remember where any of my WoW Druid spells are) but I am still surprised how smooth my restart was.
I’ve been playing WoW: Classic with some friends who are nostalgic for World of Warcraft. I have never played WoW before, but I have a Dwarf Paladin now. Everything in this game takes forever and mostly involves standing around waiting for combat to finish, or running forward waiting to get into combat. The best bits are when you get to interact with other players and have cool natural moments (fighting a big monster together, a high-level character helping you with something) and I also have a pet rabbit now, which has improved my opinion of the game.
The old-school graphics are lovely, but I have a feeling that the whole experience isn’t really offering me much value? Especially not for £10 a month. Somehow, I’m kind of keen to play some more.
I have not had a good week in video games.
I bought a Switch in order to specifically play Ringfit Adventure, which I did! Once! And then my Joy-Cons both stopped wirelessly connecting to the Switch. They worked when plugged in, but as soon as they were disconnected, nothing. Fine, I contact Nintendo, they say ship them back to them for repairs, which I do… but I’m impatient and I figure I can eventually play multiplayer games on the Switch, so I buy another pair of Joy-Cons! Woo!
… which also don’t connect wirelessly. Which means I have to wait to get the other Joy-Cons back to confirm if this is a Switch problem or if I have another faulty set of Joy-Cons (blargh).
FINE. Fine. I bought Star Wars Squadrons, and after I started using my Dual Stick controller I’ve been having a lot of fun with it! Sure, it has some graphical glitches occasionally (for example, landing on a Star Destroyer and then launching again usually results in the screen being totally black), but that’s okay! I’m on mission 11 of the campaign, gotta be close to being done so I can try the online part of the game… and now it’s crashing constantly. Won’t even launch. Goodie.
Which brought me back to Battletech, which I am enjoying once again. This is the first time I’m trying out the Career mode, and I am enjoying all the new bits and bobbins they’ve added since last time (Urbies! Man, it’s been forever since I’ve seen an Urbanmech!). So that’s good, at least. I’ll probably go back to playing Rise of the Tomb Raider and Neir: Automata eventually, but with my work schedule cranking into “Holiday Season Insanity”, I just want something light and lovely, and Battletech is that.
I know some of my old guildies went back and I think they are still playing classic. The Nostalgia is strong with many… I am not sure that for someone who didn’t play in the old days this is a really good game. I stopped playing classic after I turned level 15. Yes, it hit all the nostalgia buttons and yes, it was awesome to relive some of my memories but… as you said everything is sooo slow and takes forever… but Blizz knows how to hand out delicious bits of rewards to keep you coming back again and again. And from what I hear they made some solid changes to the classic experience as they are expanding the world for a second time…
For me, the fun part of discovery and exploration cannot be repeated once my slow descent into the hell of formulaic rotation play was completed.
As for the multiplayer of the MMO: I experienced too much guild drama around raiding and too many idiots in instances and gankers in the outside world (I am really really good at running away) to find much joy in any of the multiplayer aspects so I turned it into a solitaire game with chat and the occasional group instance for most of the last two or three expansions.
I remember the good times that did happen with great fondness. Karazhan, Zhul Gurub and most of all the Lich King version of Nax were just awesome things that I will never forget. But times past, are past… and my current opinion of Blizzard is miles and miles from where it was when I couldn’t wait for WoW to finally be released as their crowning achievement…
I admit I will probably get Shadowlands just for one final look around and to experience flying with my druid again. (next to the glider in Zelda it is one of the coolest things I got to do in computer games[1]) I’ve been hoping for the past oh-so-many years that they will move away from the subscription model completely or at least towards one that works for people like me who just like to play a couple of days a month. But that hope has been dashed with every expansion and the latest one is so fucking expensive that I find no other words for it but expletives.
[1] my partner has promised to get the PS5 Spiderman game for me at some point… he says I am going to like it
We’re a very casual group of players, and having a nice time hanging out, but yes it definitely feels like a constant carrot on a stick.
I would like this a lot. We’re playing once a week for ~4 hours and the subscription model just doesn’t have the value needed for that kind of player.
That’s rough. Mine near enough need line of sight with the switch for remote connection. But VERY frustrating.
I played ringgit for a week or two. Really need to do more of it. My unfit lardy ass found it could be an “alright” workout.
