My initial strategy is.
I use a word with 2 vowels, and if that is out of luck, use a different word with 2 other vowels. There are a few common consonants I like to use to find or exclude as early as possible.

It helped that I eliminated all the other vowels in my first 3 guesses, but it took me so long to find a word that fit BA___. I was like “Bajan? That can’t be right.”

Pure luck: last letter almost certainly fitted only one other location; that left an uncommon ending, so had relatively few words I could think of to fit and happened to pick the right one.
